The Pakistan Army on Monday rubbished reports that the army chief would seek to extend his tenure from three to four years.

“Speculations about extension in service of COAS are baseless,” the ISPR Director General Lt-General Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a Twitter message.

While quoting the army chief, ISPR said national interest is supreme and will be safe guarded at all costs.

Earlier, the federal government has dropped the clearest hint yet that it is ready to back a proposal to extend the tenure of chief of the army staff’s office from three to four years.

Sources close to the prime minister’s office said, on the condition of anonymity, that the proposal was informally floated with the top military office. But the incumbent of the office suggested that the government should reconsider the proposal and implement it from the tenure of the next chief of the army staff, who will take charge in November 2016.

Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, they claim, effectively communicated to the federal government that he may not be interested in any extension in his office tenure. There has been a lot of media speculation round this particular question.

The idea of extension in tenures is a continuation of former military General Pervez Musharraf who gave extensions to himself from 2001 to 2008 and then General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani who was given extensions in his normal tenure and he ended up serving in the role for six years.

Good decision. So, who will be next? My guess is that it will be Javed Iqbal Rmaday(Due to family relations with House of Sharifs) or one who is Kashmiri. As per Wikipedia, following is the seniority list after Raheel Sharif and Rashid Mahmood retire

I don't believe in extension, will retire on due date: Gen Raheel Sharif
DAWN.COM — PUBLISHED 19 MINUTES AGO
Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant-General Asim Bajwa on Monday has rubbished reports regarding an extension of General Raheel Sharif's tenure as Chief of Army Staff, quoting Gen Raheel Sharif as saying he will "retire on the due date" in November this year.

In a series of tweets by the director general of the military's media wing, Army Chief General Raheel was quoted as saying, "Pakistan Army is a great institution. I don't believe in extension and will retire on the due date."

The post of Army chief is inarguably the most powerful in Pakistan and speculation had recently been rife regarding an extension in the Chief of Army Staff's tenure following former president Musharraf's statement calling for an extension in his term.

On Nov 27, the government approved Sharif’s appointment for the slot of Chief of Army Staff, a position that he took over from Ashfaq Parvez Kayani who stepped down on Nov 29, 2013, after serving as military chief for six years.

Born in Quetta on June 16, 1956 to Major and Mrs Muhammad Sharif, Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif grew up steeped in the military tradition.

He attained his formal education at Government College Lahore and later went on to attend the Pakistan Military Academy.

As a young officer, he performed his duties in Gilgit in an infantry brigade and also served as adjutant of Pakistan Military Academy.

Over the years, Sharif climbed up the military ladder mentored by Musharraf who handed him command of the 11th Infantry Division in Lahore.

He was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the second highest civilian award and honour that is given to both civilians and military officers of the Pakistan armed forces.

Despite the common surname, Raheel Sharif is not related to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but is known to be close to tribal affairs minister Lieutenant-General Abdul Qadir Baloch, a key confidante of the Sharif family.

The general is married with two sons and a daughter.

lol at everyone (including me myself) who had hopes of him purging the system of corrupt fatcats/bringing electoral reform/getting rid of "true terrorism" from Pak (economic corruption) because he had the "blood of a Nishan-e-Haider" in his family.

What Raheel Sharif and Pak army have done these past 3/4 years have been cosmetic repairs. Kicking the TTP out of NWA wont root out extremism; eliminating poverty and funding education will. And the biggest roadblock to those two objectives are corrupt politicians like Nawaz and Zardari. Conducting thousands of rangers raids in Karachi wont eliminate the crime there; disarming the MQM will! And here I'd thought that the COAS would usher in a couple of permanent improvements. Business as usual, just another pawn in the hands of Sharif baradaran.

all of these are also retiring early next year, so is the next chief will be for 6-9 months?

. .
We need him for a few more years to help Pakistan get out of the mess, but i have my doubt about him remaining in Office.

. .
Right decision by General. It is not his job to purge corruption in politics. It is the job of people of Pakistan. If we won't do it nobody else will. There is no Messiah coming down to solve our problems. We have to do it ourselves or else remain in same mess.

.
I will get extension by P.M because he proved non political and non interested in Govt. M.r Nawaz Sharif will not take any risk to promote junior General because most of the seniors are retiring in next year.

.
He did his job in the best possible way without violating constitution or creating collision between Military and Government.

Those who think that he was there to bring corrupt politicians to justice, uproot terrorism, economic growth and reforms in political and social systems of Pakistan, then they are wrong.

He was here to SHOW AND PROVE that no matter how much good guy this nation can have as Army Chief, no matter how much military hold itself with in legal boundaries, no matter how good work they do with their responsibilities.......

The Corrupt political set up, paid media, lose justices will always dominate their role .....

If you want REAL change, you cannot bring it with in boundaries of law, democracy and constitution.......

He's the Chief of the Army, not a politician. He can't just have the Prime Minister, or other political leaders arrested. The nature of the army has changed, it may still be politically involved in some areas, but it no longer wants to interfere with domestic politics; Basically, it will respect the vote, from now on.

You can bet that Pakistan would end up in turmoil, if the army chief decided to arrest nawaz. There would be riots on the streets, creating a security mess, which the country cannot afford. The public may support the army, but it will no longer tolerate a coup.

So we have to change the System well for any revolution to follow a period of Anarchy is a must and within it lies the problem because Pakistan is a nation that cannot afford anarchism.
