Apple Inc.’s slumping China sales reflect more than just a slowing economy and stalling market for smartphones. It’s also a sign that local vendors are finally producing high-end devices that can compete with the iPhone.

With the next iteration of the iPhone still months away and last year’s 6s failing to stand out as a major upgrade, Chinese consumers are less willing to pay a premium for an Apple product, according to Counterpoint Research. That is bad news for a company that has been counting on growth in the world’s largest smartphone market.

Apple sales for Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, plunged 26 percent in the March quarter and market share shrank as local vendors won customers with smartphones sporting high-end parts and priced hundreds of dollars cheaper. Huawei Technologies Co. and Xiaomi Corp. are pushing up-market and targeting more affluent consumers with larger displays while the Cupertino, California-based company’s major mobile release this year was the iPhone SE with a four-inch screen.

“Almost 80 percent of the phones shipped now are 5-inch and above,” said Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint. “Chinese brands such as Huawei, Oppo and Vivo are able to attract Chinese consumers with beautiful design and advanced features.”

Apple’s share of the Chinese market dropped to 12 percent in the March quarter from 18 percent a year earlier, Counterpoint said.

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive officer, singled out mainland China as a market “that I am personally very focused on,” he said during a call with analysts. Cook is pressing ahead with Chinese expansion after opening seven new stores in the latest quarter and planning another five in the current period.

Shipments of the iPhone fell to 13 million units the first quarter, down from 16 million a year earlier, according to preliminary data from IDC China research manager Di Jin. In contrast, Huawei smartphone shipments rose by 50 percent to over 16 million units during the same period.

“Local brands like Oppo and Vivo are really strong brands and have done a good job in their channel expansion,” she said, adding that younger customers now looked favorably on local smartphones. “They’ve used a lot of marketing campaigns and advertising online.”

Great news! Apple is a terrible company and their products are overpriced and over-hyped.

All Chinese should buy domestic products.
I would differ with your opinion, I agree with you though that Apple charges a premium over its products but it delivers the best build quality and premium products that usually perform better in the long run.

Apple have been increasingly cutting corners on build quality, whilst charging steeper prices for products that other companies are making just as well, if not even better. Just give iphone flashy bright colours and Apple-tards will buy them in droves.

P9 plus now, buddy.

Yes, I would agree with you partly.
But the fact remains, if I were to buy a single iPhone, instead, I could buy 4 different phones and from different companies to gain experience of phones from different companies.
If it was me, I would buy 4 phones. Let me ask you this, would you settle for one wife or several wives? :D

I have three Chinese phones, two with dual Sim cards. Now I've got 5 different numbers. ;)
Lol, I have a friend who owns three iPhones. I tease him by calling him an ifool.

I have been using Apple since as far as I can remember simply because I saw my father using it but I have used other brands namely Samsung, Sony, Asus, Nexus etc too.
lolzzzz  but I must say I would prefer one classy beautiful wife who is loyal and friendly, easy to get along than a lot of cheaper ones with a lot of problems and complicating my life as hell (some experience :) )

However, that said, the current down turn in Apples sale is surely expected and I more than welcome it because, Apple after the death of Steve Jobs has stopped leader in innovations. Rather it has been left behind and has been stingy in many areas while competition has become very tough and Samsung is formidable foe. For example my Samsung s7 has much better display than my iPhone 6s. Furthermore, there is no feature in iPhone that is unique except for iOS but after the introduction of Apps you can find similar Apps for android OS. Thus this is a wake up call for Apple to start innovation other the market will force it to a lower status. Nokia is just one example.

This must be last century's story. lol

I told you, I always go for class and quality...Cheap stuff is great in short term but I value reliability, easy of use and premium feel so I'm still not so keen for lesser brands until they reach a certain threshold in quality and performance.

I feel bad now :partay:

I have an HTC now, another Greater China brand. The next will be Huawei, for sure. I was between Oppo and Huawei but now decided on Huawei.

I really like Huawei's logo. For some reason, I care as much about the logo design as the design of the phone itself.

I'm not phone enthusiasm nowaday, even I begin to use smartphone ( with keyboard ) since 2004 ( a Window phone )
I must tell you, we should stick to a stable and optimized OS, not open source OS which eat your hardware and battery as eating candies.
That's why an Iphone and Microsoft phone could utilize the normal hardware ( ie. RAM 1GB ) to run smooth for most of apps, while Android based phone need more and more RAM ( upto 2-4GB ), they become terrible after few month of usage.

And yeah, I don't use Iphone because it's pricey and offer only single slot of SIM,

I want a single phone, because I sticked to only one SIM number over decades, but in my country, an extra slot needed for better Data plan. That's why we ( my family member ) all come for a dual sim, large screen ( 5.5-5.7") phone, 1 slot for Data SIM.

1 use Sony Xperia ( Made in China )
2 use Microsoft Lumia ( Made in Vietnam ) for Office 365 and other office apps which also used in the Corporation

I wonder how a guy or a girl manage to use 3-4 phones at the same time?
And Iphone can't sell many Iphone SE with single slot SIM, 4" screen in Asia.

An average user like me prefer dual Sim and 5" and above.

I concur with you for the most part.

Apple does usually shell out premium quality products. Some of those products will continue (despite what some nationalists here might say) to sell very well in China (and all over the planet)

Just for the record, I'm a very happy Galaxy Note 5 owner who is far from an apple fanboy. In fact, I find some Apple fanboys to be quite cultish in their worship. The term "iCattle" is very fitting for them.

Looking forward to 2 new CPUs from Huawei: Kirin 960 in 2016 and Kirin 970 in 2017. :partay::enjoy:
