It is very common that in a materialistic and capitalistic society such as the West that the parents leave their children to be raised by nannies (who they change every month). Thus the bond between parent and child which is necessary for the child's mental stability/health is non existent.

I tend to think that in teenage, the influence of your friends (and sometimes teachers) is far more than your parents.
I was a rebel in my teens, and anything my parents say, I would pretty much do the opposite. I am not from west.
I live in west, people tell all sorts of things about west without living there. I am more materialistic than white folks, I have observed. I never felt ashamed about it. Its an individual thing.

I have lived in America for 19 years, long enough to make a judgement. Most kids from wealthy families do not spend adequate time with their parents, both of whom are working or spending time elsewhere .

That basically sums it up. The guy obviously had deep mental and emotional issues As most virgins and people who feel rejected by girls/guys don't usually go out and commit mass murder.
