Hang Seng down 4.29pc on recession fears

Hong Kong stocks slumped 4.29 percent as world markets suffered a huge sell-off over concerns that the global economy is on the verge of another recession.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index fell 938.60 points to 20,946.14 on turnover of HK$124.77 billion.

Markets tumbled across Asia -- with Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul and Singapore all hammered -- as already-fragile confidence was hit by more weak US economic data and a warning that the eurozone debt crisis had likely spread.

They also followed big falls in the United States, where the Dow suffered its worst one-day drop since December 2008 to close 4.31 percent lower.

"The current sell-off in the local and regional stock markets is like a repeat of the meltdown post-Lehman Brothers' collapse in 2008,'' said Tanrich Securities investment manager Jackson Wong.

All 46 blue-chip companies on the benchmark index ended in the red.

Companies with large overseas portfolios and export-related businesses were the biggest losers. Hutchison Whampoa dropped 8.3 percent to HK$82.90, Cosco Pacific plunged 8.1 percent to HK$10.22 and CNOOC dived 5.9 percent to HK$15.54.

Macau casino plays were also badly hit. Wynn Macau lost 7.5 percent to HK$24.75 and Sands China dropped 7.3 percent to HK$22.15.

Chinese shares closed down 2.15 percent. The Shanghai Composite Index shed 57.62 points to 2,626.42 on turnover of 87.8 billion yuan (HK$106.36 billion).

The index is down nearly three percent for the week.

"The A-shares were affected by the sharp drop in US stocks last night and by the external global economic situation. This might be an overhang for the market here for the next one or two weeks,'' said Zhou Xu, an analyst from Nanjing Securities.

Analysts said losses in the domestic market were limited compared with regional markets because of the already-low valuations.

Banks led the losses Friday. China Minsheng Banking Corporation lost 1.9 percent to 5.27 yuan and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China dropped 1.2 percent to 4.11 yuan.

Airlines had mixed performance. China Eastern Airlines finished 2.9 percent higher at 5.39 yuan. Air China fell 1.4 percent to 9.38 yuan.

IT stocks HCL Tech, Wipro, TCS fall on US ratings downgrade

Shares of information technology (IT) companies, which earn a major chunk of their revenue from the US and the Europe, fell sharply on the bourses on Monday on concerns over the US losing its top-notch credit rating due to mounting debts.

All the three top IT companies - Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro and Infosys - witnessed a huge fall in their share prices in morning trade on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Shares of TCS, india's largest IT exporter, plunged 5.18 per cent and were trading at Rs 1,002. Similarly, India's third-largest IT company, Wipro, shed 5.53 per cent and was quoting at Rs 347.65.

Sensex plunges over 500 points on opening, uncertainty looms

The second-heaviest scrip on Sensex after Reliance Industries (RIL), Infosys dropped 4.51 per cent to Rs 2,473.60.

Weakness was seen in the stocks of other IT companies as well, with Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech and Patni Computer losing up to 7 per cent in early trade.

The sharp fall came after the US lost its 'AAA' credit rating for the first time in history, as ratings agency S&P was not convinced with the efforts being made to tackle the country's debt problems.

TCS, Infosys and Wipro rely on the US and European markets for about 60 per cent of their revenue.

Led by losses in these stocks, the BSE IT index was trading down by 4.49 per cent at 5,214 and was the poorest performer among the 13 sectoral indices. This marks a fresh 52-week low for the index.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex lost more than 500 points within minutes of the market opening and was later trading at 16,890.31, down 415.56 points.

But dealing with illegal immigrants from China is rarely so simple. Though they are vastly outnumbered by illegal immigrants from Latin America — perhaps 500,000 among the estimated 13 million "unauthorized migrants" — they are tougher to remove, for reasons as complex as the U.S.-China relationship itself.

LOS FRESNOS, Texas — Police wearing berets and bulletproof vests broke down the door of a Guatemala City apartment in February hunting for illegal drugs. Instead, they found a different kind of illicit shipment: 27 immigrants from India packed into two locked rooms.

The Indians, whose hiding space was furnished only with soiled mattresses, claimed to be on vacation. But authorities quickly concluded they were waiting to be smuggled into the United States via an 11,000-mile pipeline of human cargo — the same network that has transported thousands of illegal immigrants from India, through Central America and Mexico and over the sandy banks of the Rio Grande during the past two years.
Indians have arrived in droves even as the overall number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. has dropped dramatically, in large part because of the sluggish American economy. And with fewer Mexicans and Central Americans crossing the border, smugglers are eager for more "high-value cargo" like Indians, some of whom are willing to pay more than $20,000 for the journey.

"Being the businessmen they are, they need to start looking for ways to supplement that work," said Rosendo Hinojosa, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector, at the southernmost tip of Texas, which is the most active nationwide for apprehending Indian nationals.
Between October 2009 and March 2011, the Border Patrol detained at least 2,600 illegal immigrants from India, a dramatic rise over the typical 150 to 300 arrests per year.

The influx has been so pronounced that in May, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee that at some point this year, Indians will account for about 1 in 3 non-Mexican illegal immigrants caught in Texas

Illegal Indian immigrants increasingly sneaking across Texas-Mexico border
By Catholic Online (NEWS CONSORTIUM)

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Fewer Mexicans and Central Americans are crossing the U.S. border due to the downturn in the local economy, and human smugglers are eager for more "high-value cargo" like Indians.

"Being the businessmen they are, they need to start looking for ways to supplement that work," Rosendo Hinojosa, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector says. The Rio Grande is the southernmost tip of Texas, and is the most active nationwide for apprehending Indian nationals.

Between October 2009 and March 2011, the Border Patrol detained at least 2,600 illegal immigrants from India, a dramatic rise over the typical 150 to 300 arrests per year. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee that at some point this year, Indians will account for about 1 in 3 non-Mexican illegal immigrants caught in Texas.

Once inside the U.S., many Indian illegals fan out across the country, often relying on relatives who are already here to arrange jobs and housing. Indians have flooded into Texas in part because U.S. authorities have cracked down on the traditional ways they used to come here, such as entering through airports with student or work visas. The tougher enforcement has made it harder for immigrants to use visas listing non-existent universities or phantom companies.

Another contributing factor to this uptick is that the nations of Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras have sought to attract investors by allowing visitors from India to enter without visas. Mexico has since asked neighboring Guatemala to restore the visa requirement for Indians, which it did on June 6.

The nations of El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras still don't require visas for Indians, meaning smugglers can shift routes and use those countries as alternate jumping-off points for the journey north.

Indians caught by U.S. authorities often claim they fled their homeland because of religious persecution.

Indian Immigration | Surge of immigrants from India baffles border officials in Texas - Los Angeles Times

Thousands from India have entered Texas illegally from Mexico in the last year. Most are Sikhs who claim religious persecution at home.

Thousands of immigrants from India have crossed into the United States illegally at the southern tip of Texas in the last year, part of a mysterious and rapidly growing human-smuggling pipeline that is backing up court dockets, filling detention centers and triggering investigations.

The immigrants, mostly young men from poor villages, say they are fleeing religious and political persecution. More than 1,600 Indians have been caught since the influx began here early last year, while an undetermined number, perhaps thousands, are believed to have sneaked through undetected, according to U.S. border authorities.

Hundreds have been released on their own recognizance or after posting bond. They catch buses or go to local Indian-run motels before flying north for the final leg of their months-long journeys.

"It was long … dangerous, very dangerous," said one young man wearing a turban outside the bus station in the Rio Grande Valley town of Harlingen.

The Indian migration in some ways mirrors the journeys of previous waves of immigrants from far-flung places, such as China and Brazil, who have illegally crossed the U.S. border here. But the suddenness and still-undetermined cause of the Indian migration baffles many border authorities and judges.

The trend has caught the attention of anti-terrorism officials because of the pipeline's efficiency in delivering to America's doorstep large numbers of people from a troubled region. Authorities interview the immigrants, most of whom arrive with no documents, to ensure that people from neighboring Pakistan or Middle Eastern countries are not slipping through.

There is no evidence that terrorists are using the smuggling pipeline, FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials said.

The influx shows signs of accelerating: About 650 Indians were arrested in southern Texas in the last three months of 2010 alone. Indians are now the largest group of immigrants other than Latin Americans being caught at the Southwest border.

The migration is the "most significant" human-smuggling trend being tracked by U.S. authorities, said Kumar Kibble, deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. In 2009, the Border Patrol arrested only 99 Indians along the entire Southwest border.

"It's a dramatic increase," Kibble said. "We do want to monitor these pipelines and shut them down because it is a vulnerability. They could either knowingly or unknowingly smuggle people into the U.S. that pose a national security threat."

Most of the immigrants say they are from the Punjab or Gujarat states. They are largely Sikhs who say they face religious persecution, or members of the Bharatiya Janata Party who say they are targeted for beatings by members of the National Congress Party.

But analysts and human rights monitors say political conditions in India don't explain the migration. There is no evidence of the kind of persecution that would prompt a mass exodus, they say, and Sikhs haven't been targets since the 1980s. The prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, is a Sikh.

"There is no reason to believe these claims have any truth to them," said Sumit Ganguly, a political science professor and director of the India Studies Program at Indiana University.

Some authorities think the immigrants are simply seeking economic opportunities and are willing to pay $12,000 to $20,000 to groups that smuggle them to staging grounds in northern Mexico. Kibble said smugglers may have shifted to the Southwest after ICE dismantled visa fraud rings that brought Indians to the Northeast.

Many Indians begin their journey by flying from Mumbai to Dubai, then to South American countries such as Ecuador or Venezuela, according to authorities and immigration attorneys. Guatemala has emerged as the key transit hub into Mexico, they said. The roundabout journeys are necessary because Mexico requires visas for Indians.

They sneak across the dangerous Guatemala-Mexico border and take buses or private vehicles to the closest U.S.-Mexico border. Mexican organized crime groups are suspected of being involved either in running the operations or in charging groups tolls to pass through their territory.

The Indians usually wade across the Rio Grande, and then are shuttled from stash houses to transportation rings that take them north. David Aguilar, deputy commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, an agency within the Department of Homeland Security, said he believed a high percentage were caught as soon as they crossed the river.

"We very intensely interview, look at their backgrounds, check them against any watch list," Aguilar said, adding that although India is not considered a "special interest" source country for terrorists, the undocumented immigrants are scrutinized as if it were.

America is certainly sinking ship but it won't collapse without a major world war.I suspect a new world power will emerge after third world war which will be new Super Power and America's reign as sole super power will end.Don't think it is possible for America to collapse without a major war but saying that America will loose due to Iraq or Afghanistan war is fantasy.America is too strong and I think American People are very very smart and intelligent (They get the best of the best people from other countries via immigration).
