Amazing planes that failed

A successful Failure HF-24 Marut("Spirit of the Tempest")

Indian fighter-bomber aircraft of the 1960s.

A success because:

1. It had pleasant handling characteristics and good aerobatic capabilities it was well liked by its pilots.

2. It was used in combat in the ground attack role, where its safety features such as manual controls whenever the hydraulic systems failed and twin engines were looked upon favourably and increased survivability.

3. A total of 147 aircraft were built, including 18 two-seat trainers.

4. The Marut squadrons acquitted themselves very well in the 1971 war.

5. The Marut, as an aircraft, was shown to be tough and capable. No aircraft were ever lost in air-to-air combat.

Failure because:


1. Its full potential could not be realized because of insufficient power. Although originally conceived to operate in the vicinity of Mach 2, the aircraft in fact turned out to be barely capable of reaching Mach 1

did you giggle because pakistan aeronautical industry ever tired building there own ,oh i forgot you made super duper jf17 only tested & developed by China ,if that's the case then India is building its PAKFA just like you developed your JF17 only difference will be the generation they belongs to :azn:

How come nobody has mentioned the amazing CF-105 Avro Arrow? A Canadian design that did things that American and British designers said couldn't be done! There was an entire documentary produced on the CF-105 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The aircraft was aborted when Prime Minister Diefenbaker (Dief the Chief) made one of the most infamous decisions of his career and caved in to pressure from the Americans.

In one blow, Canada's Aerospace industry was reduced to levels from which we still have not yet recovered. From being foremost players in defense aviation, we've come down to where the only all-Canadian airplanes are business jets. Canada also suffered a massive brain-drain following this debacle because most senior Canadian Aerospace scientists and engineers ended up taking well-paying jobs in the US. Nearly half of the senior engineering staff that worked on the CF-105 ended up with NASA, whereas most of the rest were distributed between General Dynamics, Grumman, Lockheed etc.

Anyway, the fallen hero - CF-105 Avro Arrow:

When I was interning at the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., I used to have a cut-out picture of the F-35 as the desktop background on both my monitors. One day a senior engineering lady passed by the cubicle and stopped to take a long look at the pictures. Then she asked me a few questions about the F-35, and told me that she was one of the engineers who had worked on the CF-105 Avro Arrow. Despite the fact that all documents of the design had been forcefully destroyed, many engineers took drawings and models of the aircraft as souvenirs. She, too, had one such drawing which she later e-mailed me. Hence, I came to possess a piece of Canadian History that was nearly destroyed.

Seriously LCA - Tejas deserved to be posted in this thread.
The LCA Tejas isn't a failure. Its first Block may have been, but the aircraft is still under development. It can't be classified a failure until it goes the way of the Marut.

My favorite "failed planes"
1. Northrop F-20 tiger shark
the tiger Shark was offered to PAF in 1980z, some say, with ToT but still wisely enough PAF opted for a more potent F-16.

2. Northrop YF-23 black widow
black Widow and the grey Ghost were the prototypes that competed with F-22 for USAF next generation fighter program but lost to the raptor.
there is still a possibility that the program be revived for USAF interim bomber requirment.

People, prototypes are not failed aircraft. Prototypes, technology demonstrators, experimental planes etc. are, by definition, one of a kind. The main purpose is to learn and apply. Stop calling prototypes failures, it hurts me as an engineer when you do so.

Yes, sir. They have a full-size model at the Canadian Air & Space Museum here in Toronto. I've got pictures of it, but unfortunately, I'm in them and so cannot put them up here.

It wasn't only the yanks, Canadians were more to blame for this. The thing is that there were reports the KGB had infiltrated the engineering departments and were gathering vital information. Hence, everything was ordered to be destroyed. However, most Canadians blame the Americans for spreading these rumors and pressuring the Canadian government to pretty much shut down its aerospace industry. Canada's Aerospace industry was a huge problem for the Americans and the French. The Brits, of all people, were willing to buy the CF-105. Obviously, the Americans wouldn't want that. Hence, every fighter jet we've operated since has been American.

A full-scale model of the Avro Arrow at the Canadian Air & Space Museum. It was built by former CF-105 engineers and enthusiasts utilizing whatever documentation was remaining. It really is an awesome sight up close.

well this is a big big plane, inst it? specially considring it an Interceptor fighter!!

i mean look at its dimension:
Height: 20 ft 6 in
Wingspan: 50 ft 0 in
Length: 77 ft 9 in

comaprd to other interceptor like:

that really was i big baby...
the russian planes are usually bigger then there westren counter parts but this beast beats even the Mig-29, Su-27. only planes i find comparable in dimensions are the Su-30z and the Mig-25!!
