Samsung Unveils First 14nm Mobile Processor



22nm could be at acceptable but sorry you can't compete in today's market with a 65nm processor... AMD still produces 32nm processors and everybody makes fun of them... nobody buys an AMD CPU anymore.

Titan X is the most powerfull single CPU gaming graphics card out there, don't tell Nvidia that it is outdated.
Smaller architecture are prone to failures and you don't want failures in aerospace and military applications.
32nm, 28nm, 14nm and the overdue 10nm coexist in the same timeframe and they all have their place.
Mobile phones and all things battery powered like low power processors however Samsung is switching to 14nm long after Intel did, how is that. It is not only the cutting edge technology that finds a market but also who owns that technology and who has that capability to produce is important. In many cases other than consumer products you don't want sombody elses design in your system so it is OK to have an older generation architecture if you can make it yourself. Otherwise you probably won't know why your plane crashed, missile didn't hit the traget, or your submarine sank. The kill swithes and all.

You can have a 65nm processor with a number of cores and still have good processing power, and multiple CPUs as well.

It is like a marketing hype that Intel or Samsung will make talking about how the lesser generation processors are outdated. There are many products that don't require high computing power. The high end processor game has room for only very few players. And you don't have to be playing the top end game or not play at all.

I know as the transistor gets smaller chance of failure rises due to quantum tunneling of electrons...
but there are fail-safe devices in place for that.. 14nm is actually quite big for that to become a real issue... I think.
and even if you produce the processor yourself failure rates aren't going to change because YOU made it.

by this logic no one should know why their server crashed because everyone's on Xeon processors :disagree:

C'mon buddy, how many planes and spacecraft do we produce annually? You know it'd be a dead investment...

Dude you only read posts partially. You can produce many consumer devices that don't require high end processors. Like electronics for cars, satellite receivers, lower end mobile phones, all kind of household durable goods and many more.

Tanks, ships, missiles, radio receiver/transmitters all devices that don't require high end processors. Not only some planes that will only number in the hundreds. And also last but not the least the silently momentum gaining solid state batteries, that will change the world once and for all rely on low end processor technology. Truthfully I will take a 65nm processor anytime than waiting for miracles to happen and I find a high end technology with the dev budgets that we can afford to allocate to high end tech.

Kill swithces can send a country into stone ages with the push of a button.

but still I recommend to start somewhere or the best would be to bring samsung to us even if it means that we pay the building of the fabrics and machines and let them produce without paying taxes for 15 years.. ;)

we need processors made in turkey for our military and there is no "we do not need it we can buy it" mentality.. because this is a sensitive part of everything.. you do not build your own processor then you will have parts in it where you can hack it and the worst thing of all is having a good crypto algorithm but a hardware that makes it easy to break.. maybe software hardware interface would be faster because of specialized parts of cpu best excample is video encode decoder, compression and crypting if you have specialised parts in cpu than you can make it significantly faster.. and really I think a uav could benefit of specilized cpu

and I am not talking about desktop / server cpu I am talking about special cpu that can be used in radars, uav, guns, handheld radio transceivers ,planes and T129

They are not only used for graphics processing anymore. And they are the CPUs of the graphic card, it just so happened that I typed that way, you think I didn't know, I am looking into game development ventures and Virtual Reality tech nowadays, so I should know.

I don't want a foreign producer to set up shop in Turkey. I want our own people to do that. There are some initiatives already. I just hope they pan out.

we don't produce cellphones in Turkey as far as I'm aware.. cars.. maybe, if you incerase the die size you could make it work, but I don't know if you've seen it but there are cars like Tesla model S and it seems mercedes, audi and even ford is following that trend to put large screens on the dashboard, and high end cars like that are going to need as much processing power as your desktop PC. These cars are surrounded by sensors and they keep adding new features with firmware updates.

there are supercomputers that have tons of GPUs in them because they are better at certain tasks.

there are supercomputers that have tons of GPUs in them because they are better at certain tasks.

I am afraid large screens will have to go the obsolete high tech devices hell once VR hits the shelves. And tesla model X that was unveiled yesterday is great. But Elon Musk likes Solid State Batteries better than lipo.

They didn't even come out in consumer versions yet, but the Augmented Reality ones are the killers for interaction with surroundings. With VR you can watch cinema today. 5 years down the road the world will be a different place.

I'd put them in motorcycle helmets instead... motorbiker always has to wear a helmet anyway so it'd be a win-win for him
for cars touch-screens are the way to go for now. That is until hologram technology matures up and takes over IMO..

the point is, required processing power is incerasing over the years, you could keep using the old tech and larger dies, more cores but that would draw more power... you can see that becoming a problem in electric cars I think :)
