Aircraft Carrier Liaoning is drilling in the South China Sea

China’s first aircraft carrier on Tuesday left for its maiden deep-sea trials in the strategic South China Sea, where it is expected to play a major role amid heightened tensions with its neighbours over disputed islands.

The ‘Liaoning’ left its home port of Qingdao for the South China Sea on a scientific and training mission, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

China is a conducting several experiments on the 65,000-tonne carrier, including testing the new J-15 fighter plane’s operations from its deck.

This is the first time the carrier has embarked on a cross-sea training voyage since it was commissioned into the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy in 2012, Liaoning’s Captain Zhang Zheng said. The voyage will test the carrier’s equipment, he said.

The carrier’s crew conducted a series of tests and training drills, including landing and take-off by various aircraft, including the J-15.

The carrier was escorted by two missile destroyers, Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, Yantai and Weifang.

The carrier, originally known as Varyag, was bought from Ukraine a decade ago and extensively refurbished before being commissioned in 2012.

Long voyages are necessary for experimentation and training and to test equipment and troops under continuous work and different hydrological and meteorological conditions.

The trials in the South China Sea are a ‘normal arrangement’ in the carrier’s scheduled training, the PLA Navy said as it played down the significance of the voyage at a time when China is locked in maritime disputes with Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.

The carrier’s trials began days after China’s unilateral move to establish an air defence zone over an area including islands in the East China Sea claimed by Japan.

Well, no. Liaoning is still a training ship. No country except the China knows what and amount of systems have installed in the AC. Also, all of Liaoning's personnel are still in training. However fast they are learning, it still won't be fully ready for many years.

As China already stated, Liaoning is a training ship...for now.

The USN ACC's already occupy 1 to 12 positions.. The ACC's of other countries can come only lower ranking.

It will be five years before it acquire enough experience to operate a Aircraft carrier (tall claims aside). Much longer to acquire a lethal aircraft with pilots experienced to fly for combat (again tall claims aside).

In another ten years, this carrier would leave its coastal domain to enter high seas and intimidate anybody.

At that time, away from home, it becomes vulnerable to carrier killer missiles which Chinese neighborhood countries would acquire.

Hence do not believe in much hyped propaganda which Chinese are putting out.

Considering ehe mythical extent to which CPC has promoted the idea of Aircraft Carriers, I won't be surprised if that's what a lot people there actually believe it be . To Indians AC's are great, but at the end of the day only 'big, powerful weapons'. The way the chinese look at it on the other hand it's like prestige, we beat americans, become no.1 etc. We don't look at things that way here

Actually, this carrier while not useless, it's capabilities are limited. It makes the J-15 very weak in the sense of the amount of weapons and fuel it can carry. So only the next carrier would our Carrier force be truly operational.

As of this moment, it's just training and testing going on.

So 10 years sound about right, but other than Japan, no other country has enough fighters to pose a challenge. Don't say Korea, we don't got a conflict with Korea, American troops in Korea is targeting the North not China.

As to carrier killer missiles, there exist only one that can sort of count as this and it's Chinese, the rest are more just missiles and our neighbors, again minus Japan, are not going to have access to modern weapons.

All Chinese "propaganda" if you must, is that this carrier is testing and training and no threat. Unlike somebody's government, ceremony for even half finished work. Besides, seeing as how many ships we launch per year, our top officials can't be everywhere at once.
