Air chief witnesses live missile firing of JF-17 Thunder

Most tests are done against drones and the KJL-7 is a fairly decent radar with A2A performance similar to APG-68.

The real kicker for the JF-17 is that in many engagements with the block-52, the viper pilots have difficulty figuring out where the JF-17 is if it decides to hunt in passive mode. It has a small RCS anyway and when working with its datalink its difficult to detect until it powers up its radar to get a lock and send a SD-10 on its way.
Additionally in those cases, either due to its low power output or otherwise - even under jamming the JF-17 is not picked up on the F-16s RWR until it’s already locked and shooting.
Is this for block 1 or 2? If Block 2 gives a more than decent fight to F16 blk 52, how do you perceive the current block 2 and future block 3 against the upcomming IAF Rafales?

Both.

Its not about one aircraft against another but one system(aircraft, ground radar, aew, pilot) against another.
Flown properly, the JF-17 block-1 is a serious threat to the Rafale.

.
I posed the question to a well connected source asking that since the JF-17 have been patrolling armed with SD-10 for a while now, so what was the purpose of this test. This was the reply.

Successful firing of BVR missile at a low RCS target.... much lower RCS than any aircraft also keeping in mind that the target was a slow moving drone. !!

@Oscar @Dazzler @Taimoor Khan @Bratva @The Eagle

The platform has evolved a lot & I remember when Chinese Pilot from last exercise, shared his experience against JF-17 that hard to find yet if its bite, will not let you go. The said test style keeping in mind of all mixes, actually tells that JF-17 is a deadly threat to rivals fleet if flown in pack with data and all.

I had a conversation with an Ex RAF pilot who had flown the EFT. He was full of praises for his fighter but said something jnteresting. All RAF jockeys considered the Gripen to be a more potent threat than the Rafale due to its small size and inability to see it till too late. We had a good look at the Gripen and some people say the design philosophy was similar. Not a surprise that the 16 jockdys are finding a similar situation with the Thunder. Addvent of AESA and better countermeasures will make it even more potent. However there is still a lot of work to go in to the fighter.
A statement which came from the ACM regarding the Bl.3. being the matured product made me think though. Are we going to take it further or just keep producing the bl3.

The good thing is that we are partnering with CAC AND most of the development happens there. It MAY come down to PAC deciding for or against a Block 4 that gets developed by CAC anyway. Just a possibility. At that point, a similar argument as current Vipers may apply: we already have the infrastructure so why not get more.

I think the lack of choice with regards to other platforms to induct plus how far one progresses with the 5th generation programme will determine how much effort we put into bringing out bl. 4/ 5. There is also a question aboht the upgradability of the platform which will need to be considered.

I would call it a lack of reliable andcist effective options. If we are ready to pour money, many jets are available. But most are sanction prone, high on maintenance, or end up NOT diversifying the pool of vendors.

Regardless of how the 5 gen fighter development takes place, JF-17 will be in PAF for the next 30 years so we will see a lot of later blocks with new or upgraded capabilities, similar to the F-16s now going on to Block 70 with Taiwan, Bahrain and others

JF 17 Thunder (Xiaolong) latest target training well succeeded!

Gatlin 2018-02-18 09:47:35
This month, JF-17 Xiaolong fighter designed by China for Pakistan made a key target in a new range in Pakistan.

A loud noise, JF-17 Xiaolong fighters will target volley down! Pakistani Air Force commander observing the scene. Palestinian media praised the high profile: "This is the Pakistan Air Force, and even the country's landmark moment!"

In this shooting event, the Xiaolong fighter jet launched a China-provided SD10A mid-range active radar air-to-air missile (above). The target aircraft flying at a low speed was shot down and out of sight.

Then, Xiaolong launched SD10A missiles, successfully intercept the target aircraft, it exploded into a large fireball

The targeting was conducted at the Pakistani Sangianyani Range, which was assisted by China. Omani, Commander in Chief of the Pakistan Air Forces, and Paralka, Deputy Commander, attended the shooting. Samiyani Range, Pakistan is the first to be able to complete the process of surveillance of the over-the-horizon air-to-air missile shooting range, but also the world's few can do this task range.

With the assistance of China, Pakistan once again surpassed the seemingly powerful India. Not only advanced fighter missiles and supporting facilities such as the matching shooting range have also started to surpass all-round development.

Pakistan Air Force leaders applauded the successful shooting

The JF-17 Xiaolong fighter designed by China in the Pakistani Air Force has proved to be fully capable of destroying enemy planes beyond the line of sight (usually above 40 km) and only a relatively small number of countries in the world Can do it! Which use active radar air-to-air missiles more!

It is important to point out that shooting down low-speed targets is almost as difficult as shooting down high-speed targets. Low-speed targets can be used at lower altitudes, mixed with the ground background, and interfered with missiles using radar-guided technology. This technical challenge is extraordinary.

The Chinese show Xiaofeng carrying SD10A mid-range active radar-guided air-to-air missiles. The missile is similar to China's Perak 12 air-to-air missile.

China SD10A air-to-air missile, has the most advanced active radar guidance mode, also known as "Lightning 10". The bomb is at the same level as the most advanced AIM-120 missile currently in use in the United States. 203 mm in diameter, nearly 200 kg in weight and nearly 4 meters in length. The missile range more than 70 km, the maximum speed of 4 Mach. It has all-weather, all-round ability to attack air targets.

Its service with the Pakistani Air Force enabled the country's air force to possess weapons that surpass India's Russian R77 active-radar air-to-air missile, which possesses no small reliability issue.

In his speech at the celebration, Commander Oman praised the joint efforts of Pakistani and Chinese personnel in the shooting range construction and this targeting!

Pakistani Air Force commander Oman's celebration speech, highly praised the Pakistani China and South Korea jointly completed the significance of this initiative: "This targeting, proved JF-17 Fierce Dragon has a variety of strike capability Pakistani Air Force has 6 Fighter squadron equipped with the Xiaolong fighter, we are proud of this. Fierce Dragon is the backbone of Pakistani air defense force!

SD10 low-altitude air-to-air interceptor defense missile, which is a combined guided missile system, using the form of active radar + attitude inertia + data transmission. That is, the missile adopts attitude inertial guidance control and data transmission system control while traveling. At the end of the missile to open the projectile active radar illumination system. The missile is currently rare domestic real full automatic guided missile attack missile commonly known as "missiles after launch."

Since Americans are using their drones to hit Pakistani territory, while not trespassing into Pakistani airspace, using the long range hellfire missile, this is in effect a warning to them, that we can shootdown their drones inside Afghan airspace, while flying well within Pakistani airspace.

.
I don't think it is possible to build balls, or R&D them. It basically requires something called "self respect" and needs people to not be traitors to their own kind. I remember I was in Islamabad when people where Pakistanis where being picked up and sold to the Americans, without trial, without jury, without evidence. I did etiqaf at the Faisal Masjid, and one of the teachers there, the son of a Brigadier and himself elected local government officials, a Kashmiri no less, was picked up and sold to the Americans.

I don't know if any R&D that can stop this kind of behavior.

It rivals the APG-68V9 in general performance (air to air modes, search and detection ranges) and some ground modes especially the SAR imagery, the slightly improved V1 model fitted in the blk 2 that is.
