Ahmadinejad Calls for Direct Negotiations with the U.S.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told reporters in Bali that Iran’s nuclear program has been turned into a political issue and the impasse over the program should be resolved directly between Iran and the United States. (IRNA, 8 November)

Ahmadinejad’s remarks were the latest by a senior Iranian official suggesting that Iran-U.S. direct negotiations over the country’s nuclear program are not only acceptable but desirable. On Wednesday, Mohammad Javad Larijani, secretary of Iran’s High Commission for Human Rights and brother of both the speaker of Majlis and the Judiciary chief, said “To protect the interests of the regime, we would negotiate with the U.S. or anyone else.”

Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence also posted a report on its Website on Wednesday saying to avoid military conflict over the nuclear issue, Iran needs to take “diplomatic and political measures and use the potentials of international bodies, which is a necessary and less costly option.”

The MoI report, titled “Reasons and Obstacles of a Military Attack by the Zionist Regime Against Iran,” also makes a clear distinction between positions by the Israeli government and the U.S. administration. It says President Obama “hopes to solve this issue peacefully and through diplomacy.”

In Bali, Ahmadinejad also told reporters that Iran needs to examine, “Why and who broke diplomatic relations with the U.S. some 33 years ago.” He added that he believed in existence of diplomatic relationships based on mutual respect.

Wow, Ahmadinejad is seriously question Khamenei's policy. I know both figures are involved in a power struggle, and I'm cheering for Ahmadi in this one.

.
Any chances that the issue could be solved diplomatically with direct discussions with the USA? And what are the chances of the USA and Iran resuming direct diplomatic relations if these talks succeed ?

I don't know if the issue would be solved diplomatically for once and for all, but I do believe the issue would be solved in the short-term.

I really don't know. But I'm hoping for it.

Head of judiciary Sadeq Larijani is signaling the opposite according to statement.
I can't post links yet....Google "Iran cool to re-elected Obama and talk of talks" and read the article on Reuters.

Ahmadinejad and Larijani are involved in a rhetorical fight for a long time now. So I'm not surprised by his statement.

Not having diplomatic conversation with USA is not justifiable any more. I am sure if this had been happened in Khatami era, our economy was in more acceptable stage.

Wow, why do I feel relieved even reading about this?

Ahmedinejad should wise up and do what is good for Iran. No one wants another war and death and destruction, FFS.

Negotiate with the US and Iran should come to a compromise so that trade is opened up again. Iran has great potential and that shouldnt just be wasted. It is one of those few Muslim countries that have real potential to get prosperous.

But we should accept that, during Khatami era,Europeans treated us very unfair.Iran did exactly everything they wanted from us,signing the IAEA Additional Protocol, stopping uranium enrichment, full IAEA access even to non-nuclear military sites and etc, yet, they didn't give Iran anything, not even lifting the sanctions.
Khatami proposed to talk directly to U.S,but it was rejected by Bush administration.
Not everything is our fault.

I am sure you know how much sanctions are stiffer now.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as 6th President of Iran: 3 August 2005
First UN sanction against Iran: passed on 31 July 2006
Other UN sanctions

Please read the Ahmadinejad government era at USA sanctions & EU sanctions

And compare them with Khatami era. I am sure west is not going to lift them immediately.

China had the nuc for centuries, what changes it to a super power is its developing economy not nucs. compare S-Korea with N-Korea. Which of the shining economies in the world has chosen nuc enrichment as their priority? Changing the nuclear program to a dignity issue was the most destructive action against our economy. It is vital but not the most important one for our mother land. Now we lack behind most of developing countries while we were among leading economies. Economy is far more powerful than Atoms in 21th century.

Negotiation is better than war for sure, but only if it bear fruits for all sides.
well said!

negotiation is the only way for both Iran and USA and both side have to respect eachothers

btw the negotiation will happen after next Iranian presidency election in next year.

Its funny you blame Iran while its 110% US fault, Iran simply doesnt want to be a puppet again. Iran certainly doesnt war either, but tell that to USrael.

So you prefer Iran to close its peaceful nuclear program altogether, and assume it will be all good then? Thats very naive, sorry.

First, Iran would be limiting its independence, second - sanctions wouldnt be lifted anyway, just changed from nuclear to something else, read up:

Are Sanctions a Fatwa on Iran?
