Afghanistan's enemy is Pakistan's enemy, says army chief

ISLAMABAD: While meeting Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday, Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif said that Afghanistan's enemy is also Pakistan's enemy, ISPR said.

He said this during his visit to Kabul on Tuesday where the army chief held important meetings with Afghan president as well as CEO Dr Abdullah Abdullah.

During his meeting with Ghani, both the leaders pledged support to each other in their fight against terrorism and vowed to restrict the use of their soil against each other, said the ISPR statement .

Both countries also agreed to continue the ongoing operation against militants in their respective countries, the statement added.

General Raheel also met with Afghan CEO Dr Abdullah Abdullah who acknowledged the overall positive trajectory in bilateral relations. Abdullah also talked about progress in border management and intelligence sharing.

Earlier, General Raheel along with Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar arrived in Kabul for a one-day official visit.

During their stay in Kabul, the army chief and DG ISI met the Afghan civil and political leadership, a statement issued by ISPR said.

Sources had said issues relating to security at the Pak-Afghan border would be discussed in the meetings between the Pakistani and Afghan military leadership. Coordinated operations along the Pak-Afghan border would also be reviewed in the talks.

The senior military leadership of both countries would also discuss ongoing cooperation in counter-terrorism, particularly action taken against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts on Afghan territory.

According to sources, the Pakistani military leadership would also reiterate the demand for early capture of TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah, who is currently hiding in Afghanistan near the border.

In December last year, Gen Raheel visited Kabul in the wake of the deadly Peshawar school attack and sought handover of Mullah Fazlullah who is wanted for terrorism cases in Pakistan.

The army chief had shared classified intelligence details with the Afghan officials and revealed to them that the mastermind behind the Peshawar attack, who was from Afghanistan, was giving directives to terrorists.

Gen Raheel had also met International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) commander General Joseph Dunford. Dunford had condemned the attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar and had assured Pakistan of complete cooperation in countering terrorism and in security-related matters.

The fact that Army/ISI are working to expand cooperation with the Afghan government and that the Afghan govt. is cooperative with us is a great sign. More work lies ahead.

We have good established relations from the very beginning with Ghani and its good we have reached out and established good contact with non Pashtun representatives likes CEO Abdullah Abdullah who belonged to the northern alliance 'network'

As NATO draws down slowly but surely, future lies in cooperation with the neighbours. I think on Afghanistan we need to work to get China and Iran onboard as well, as they also have a stake in this. Should get other allies like Turkiye onboard as well.

As for Fazlullah - that rat bastard will either be killed or he will be caught. I hope he is caught in good health, so we can hang him and avenge the deaths of 144 people mostly children in Peshawar and avenge other deaths caused by his hand and the hands of his criminal enterprise.

no resentment or anti-Pakistan movement on either side of the LoC

Lost Bangladesh

due to political mis-management and due to a flawed partition process in 1947 where BD should have been independent from very beginning

Lost Afghanistan

Afghanistan is not Pakistani land.....things were not in our favour post 2001. But the tides have turned in our favour and in fact it is india that has completely lost its game of cards vis-a-via Afghanistan. Look around at the changing dynamics and ground realities

Lost any control in Baluchistan and the Pashtun areas

The Army doesnt "control" Baluchistan, the provincial government does...and most security-related affairs are delegated to the police forces, border forces and the FC

as for "Pashtun areas" - permanent presence has been setup in parts of FATA region, welcomed by the local tribespeople who have cooperated with all the security apparatus (not just Army)....Pashtuns are the 2nd largest makeup group of the Pakistan Army. So there goes your theory!

Lost all credibility with the international community

which is why the Army top brass are invited to panel discussions and top meetings by the international community and which is why Pakistan Army is still lauded and highly accredited for its contribution towards the UN Peacekeeping missions (many of which are still active and in war zones all over the globe).

he's the vice president....more of a ceremonial role. He's an old timer and not exactly someone we are on the best terms with but we can pick up a phone and get in contact with him or his camp if we wanted to convey a message

the Turks have some influence over him so i dont see him as ever being an irritant to Pakistan...he really doesnt wield much power
