ABG Shipyard to build warships for Indian Navy

Bangalore: India has allowed ABG Shipyard Ltd, the country’s biggest private shipbuilder, to build warships and support vessels for the Indian Navy.

The commerce ministry on Wednesday granted ABG a licence to build submarines, attack craft and propulsion systems for the Indian Navy, chief financial officer Dhananjay Datar said.

The licence also allows the company to build weapons, equipment and assemblies for the Navy, Army and Air Force, Datar said. The licence was granted to ABG’s shipyards at Surat and Dahej, both in Gujarat. ABG is the second private sector shipbuilder to win such a licence after Pipavav Shipyard Ltd.

“This opens up a major opportunity for defence shipbuilding, which is one of our long-term objectives,” Datar said. Local shipbuilders are increasingly eyeing government-funded defence shipbuilding contracts to stay afloat as orders for constructing commercial ships dry up in the wake of an oversupply of vessels and stagnation in the tanker and dry bulk markets globally.

That's not a veri good idea.Currently they don't have any experience of building such advance stealth powerpacked ships.So first let them make some offshore patrol vessels and support vessels to gain expepriences.Then it can be thought.

Well according to me even MDL and GRSE who will be building project 17A does not know how to build these new warships...they will be using composite technology and modular shipbuilding which these shipyards don't know how to do....
Even if we give this project to private firms nothing much will effect because i bet you there will be at-least 2-3 years delay in this project also as 4 out of 7 warships will be build at MDL who has somehow managed to delay every project by 3-5 years...

But the design offered by both MDL and GRSE are very good so i don't mind if these public sector shipyards remain on the projects until they manage to retain the delays not more than 2 years...
