I am supposed to visit ANU sometime this year but have been told Canberra is rather dead as a town - am looking forward to Melbourne though.

As far as WC was concerned, he was deeply racist against Indians - look it up. Infact, he was deeply racist against pretty much all races that were not white. Read his comments about Arabs too.

If it was he and not Attlee who were Prime Minister in 1946-47, then it is highly unlikely the Independence of India Act would have been passed by the British Parliament. As Churchill still controlled the House of Lords, he tried to block the passage anyways, till he was convinced by Mountbatten to do otherwise.
