Manipur Violence: A Continuing Crisis in Northeast India

Recent reports from Manipur, India, highlight the severe ethnic violence involving the predominantly Christian Kuki-Zo community and the largely Hindu Meitei population. Since May 2023, these clashes have led to extensive displacement, killings, and allegations of severe rights abuses, including involvement by Indian security forces and possible biases against the Kuki community. In some instances, security forces have been accused of siding with Meitei groups, escalating tensions and mistrust between communities.

The unrest has a complex historical and political background, including issues of land rights and socio-political representation, as the Meitei community is concentrated in the valley, while the Kuki and other tribal groups predominantly inhabit the hills. Recent video footage circulating on social media reportedly shows Indian security forces cooperating with Meitei-affiliated groups, leading to further allegations of violence and rights abuses against Kuki individuals and communities. Activists and international observers have voiced concerns over the ongoing ethnic tensions and have urged the Indian government to intervene impartially to protect vulnerable populations and restore peace.

In response to a recent surge in ethnic violence in Manipur, India has deployed additional paramilitary forces to maintain order and curb the unrest. This deployment follows heightened tensions and incidents, as authorities attempt to restore stability amid prolonged conflicts in the state. Increased operations by security forces are aimed at supporting local law enforcement to prevent further escalations and ensure safety for residents
