No the days of illiterate sepoys have gone. Having said this, Air Commodore must have met him at a much later stage once his life was not in danger at the hands of infantry or air defence soldiers. This statement seems to be made for beautification of story. The treatment with the officer by Air Commodore was like a soldier after all Flight Lieutenant was a fighting soldier and not a criminal.

I don't think so, I believe India imparts good training to its pilots in case they land into enemy territory in hostile environment. Flight Lieutenant must have been trained accordingly.

Saurabh Kalia when returned, had many vital organs removed, and the post mortem report clearly shows the sign of torture, burning, shock, and injuries in many parts of his body. All the bodies of the IA, recieved from the pakistan had gunshot sign, showing they were shot from the close contact range.

I think MiG 21 pilot opened fire on the soldiers who wanted to capture him and another version is that he was shot before he could have landed safely. I believe alive pilot was in the best interest of pakistan, India and Ojha family.

Albeit the Pakistani professional pilot proved his credentials but the rogue Indian showed his true colours once back in India.
Initially no one from the Indian Embassy came to receive their POW and he had to be handed over to Red Cross, who thoroughly examined him and found him fit and healthy.
Once back in India, during a telecast show, the scumbag ranted that ''since there are ladies present in audience, he can't repeat what Pakistanis did to him''. !!! Leaves little to imagination how Kaiser Tufail must have felt for his own good deed.

New Delhi: There were very few incidents wherein India and Pakistan exchanged cordial relations but there some exceptions too. In a strange incident, Air Commodore (Retd.), Kaiser Tufail of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) during the Kargil war saved Group Captain K. Nachiketa, IAF pilot’s MiG 27 had crashed in Azad Kashmir near Skardu in July 1999.


Pakistani soldier had captured him and they were trying to manhandle him because he belonged to their enemy country and he had fired their locations from air. Perhaps they wanted to kill him. Captain K. Nachiketa realized the situation that he has become captive of Pakistan Air Force. Luckily, a senior officer of PAF, Air Commodore (Retd.), Kaiser Tufail came to his rescue and prevented Pakistan airmen from torturing Nachiketa.

After many years, Nachiketa told narrated this incident to media persons after he returned to Indian territory. During his captivity in Pakistan, Tufail discussed about his personal problems. Tufail provide vegetarian food for him.

In a press statement published in Indian Express in 2009, Tufail described Nachiketa a gentleman. Nachiketa said that he was amazed to find that there are so many issues in common.

Eight days after he was taken as prisoner by Pakistani troops, Indian officials started making efforts to get him released. Nachiketa further told it would not have been possible if Tufail had not saved him from the tortures of Pakistani airmen.

This is either an outright lie by the indian pilot or false propaganda by indian military. No one was going to kill that captured indian pilot, Pakistani ground forces are well trained professionals not a mob. Either the indian pilot couldn't take the light thrashing meant to frighten/humiliate him or he was expecting some red carpet reception from the people he was bombing a few minutes earlier.

There was absolutely no threat to the life of the captured indian pilot. Period.

Pakistan military is a very well trained and professional force and knowshow to treat POW's and how useful they are for propaganda purposes.

This is a bullshit story crafted either by the indian pilot himself, who exaggerated the events to show to the indian nation how brave and big a hero he is and deserves some kind of medal, or was not well trained about the possible risks and threats of being shot down over enemy territory. He was probably got frightened by the light thrashing delivered to humiliate / frighten him, and thought people were trying to kill him. How long does it take for bunch of angry Pakistani soldiers to kill a dhan pan (90 pounds) indian pilot? what was he expecting after being shot down and captured by the very people he was bombarding a few minutes earlier? a red carpet welcome?

OR this may be a defamation story crafted by indian military to discredit and defame Pakistan? I don't even understand how and why would a PAF serving pilot, posted GOD knows where, would fly/drive/teleport to the border region where the jet was shot down, search for the pilot and save him from angry mob, which during all that time was GOD knows doing what to be not able to break a single bone of that pilot, despite all their attempts to kill him. If I ever find those "angry" soldiers who can't kill a person with such a health, under 30 seconds, I'll fire them all in an instant.

People, don't take such stories apparently showing one "good" aspect but hiding tons of "poisonous" propaganda in the message. Think critically, learn to read between the lines and challenge every thing that does not make sense.

One such exception was Air Commodore (retd) Kaiser Tufail, who was the Director of Operations of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) during the Kargil war.

And on-ground, I was firing at them. Fortunately, the officer who came was very mature. He realised the situation, that I am now a captive and now I need not be handled that way. So he was able to control them, which was a big effort, because they were very aggressive at that stage," told Group Captain K Nachiketa to NDTV who was a Flight Lieutenant then during the Kargil war and his MiG 27 had crashed in Azad Kashmir near Skardu in July 1999.

The Jawans of Pakistani Northern Light Infantary who had caught Nachiketa had no intentions to treat him well and his fate was going towards that of Captain Sourav Kalia, who was captured and subjected to gruesome torture before being shot dead.

But Tufail came out for his rescue and stopped his men from torturing the Indian Officer. Years later Nachiketa told media that Tufail took him to his room and discussed about his likes and dislikes.

Nachiketa also told media years after he returned to India that Tufail discussed about the heart problem of his father and about his sisters marriage as well. The Pakistani also arranged for vegetarian snacks for the Indians and while discussing about the flying strictly told him maintain the cordiality of the room.

"I was detailed to talk to Nachiketa and it was a most friendly talk between two gentlemen officers. We had tea and some snacks and we rambled about flying...my mandate was to strictly maintain the cordiality of a crew room and to find out the circumstances of his ejection and the mission he was flying," Tufail was quoted inThe Indian Express in 2009, ten years after the war.

Nachiketa, like a gentleman officer he was, shared peculiarities of their jobs in two countries with Tufail who was his senior in rank. Both officers were amazed that they have so much common between them.

"I was so amazed to find that there are so many issues in common. I asked him what he was doing before the mission and he said he had taken leave to help arrange his sister's wedding. It is the same thing that brothers are required to do here," Tufail had told IndianExpress.

After eight days of capture and taken as a prisoner of war, the backdoor efforts of Indian Government, made Nachiketa's return to India possible. But it would not have been possible, had Tufail not saved the young Indian pilot from the torture he was destined to get by the hands of Pakistani soldiers.
