The fact is that it did happen and it was not tens or hundreds of thousands of years ago!
It was the last great melt at the end of the last ice age 13,000 years ago. It was a global event, it affected most of the human settlements. There was no human civilisation before; not that to the scale we see after that Great Flood. All the great ancient human civilisations and their triggers i.e. agriculture and pastoral nomadism began after the flood.
If we hear the stories of flood from different civilisations of the World; the reason is not that they copied these from the others but because they experienced it for themselves.
