That's something good for health issues I do hope for the smoking rate as well, for example I quited smoking 5 months ago... but I think most of us are social drinker. Ofcourse religion is also a factor but let me explain, alcohol is beeing seen as something that only causes problems, you can drink a beer or two with your friends or a vine at the dinner and nobody would say anything but people will look at you condescending if your regularly drunk, no matter if hes religious or not, its more like a social codex that concerns everybody, also secular people.

For exsample, im 24 and i still cant smoke in front of my parents even thought its not forbidden in Islam, its been considered as disrespectfull against elders.

And to this 85% non drinkers thing, i think that people who only drink at special ocassions also said that they dont drink alcohol when this poll was made.

I watched a Turkish soap just recently. Because there had been so many playing on Pakistan channel with urdu dubbing, I thought I should give it a try too. In that soap, I saw everyone drinking. At times, alcohol was just forced into the scene. It felt the Turk soap producers were trying too hard to portray Turkey as secular. I understand in affluent classes, consumption of alcohol is a symbol of status, but I could not believe every Turk, man or woman, could be drinking.

only places where drinking of alcohol is taboo, its considered secular or liberal to drink alcohol.
There is no relation between two, if you like eating chocolate, eat chocolate, you like alcohol ..drink alcohol... you dont want to.. then no probs dont drink...
as simple as that. some like it some might not.. for various reasons.
