320 million people in India, China to come out of poverty by 2015: UN

UNITED NATIONS/NEW DELHI: As many as 320 million people in India and China are expected to come out of extreme poverty in the next four years, while India's poverty rate is projected to drop to 22%, says a UN report.

The UN Millennium Development Goals Report, however, suggested that even though progress has been made in reducing poverty, Southern Asia continues to lag in terms of nutrition, sanitation and gender equality.

"In Southern Asia, however, only India, where the poverty rate is projected to fall from 51% in 1990 to about 22% in 2015, is on track to cut poverty in half by the 2015 target date," the report said.

Those living on less than $1.25 a day are considered poor.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, UN World Food Programme's representative and country director Mihoko Tamamura said, "Despite impressive economic growth in India in the last few years, inequalities persist among people based on class, gender and cast."

"If India does not meet Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the world will not...," she noted.

According to the report, China and India combined, the number of people living in extreme poverty between 1990 and 2005 declined by about 455 million, and additional 320 million people are expected to come out poverty by 2015.

By 2015, it is expected that global poverty rate will fall below 15 per cent, well under 23% target.

The problem is with the definition of Poverty.

In Mumbai the so called below poverty line people have no toilets and basic amineties but have fancy mobiles and DTH television dishes on the top of their slums.

Anyone who has travelled by harbour line or seen those slums near Bandra station will approve.

Agreed mate! You see these people living in slums with no basic amenities like washrooms, etc and yet nearly all of the houses have freaking colour T.V.s in their house and satellite dish. And many of them will have mobile phones!!!

Another thing many slum dwellers do when they are given a proper house to live in is to give it on rent and then go build another slum to live in! Nice money making business

The classic example of this is Slumdog Millionaire actress Rubina.

She was given a MHADA flat (cheap Government housing) however she refused saying it is far and her slum is at upmarket area. (Bandra East).

The logic was if her slum (on railway land) gets developed through SRA or any other Government scheme then she will make more money hence dont wanna leave the slum.

You know, when I left India not many people had mobile phones. It was considered a luxury to own one. I come back 2 years later for a visit and everyone and I mean EVERYONE had a phone in their hand.

People living in mumbai slums shouldn't be called poor. Most of them are there for a reason which isn't poverty but booming trade.
The total turnover of dharavi slum is estimated to be between US$500 million and over US$650 million per year.

do you know in my village (i won't tell the name) , even well off people show themselves below poverty line just to get the subsidized food grains and other commodities and I am sure its a common practice all over India.

it is.. I know the same used to be the case where i come from. Even massive land owners used to under declare their income just to get cheap sugar, food grain & kerosine through their rashan card from rashan store!!
