What's new

30 years since Blue Star Operation of 1984. Reaction in India?

Once Khalistan created we should give nankana saheb to sikhs, it's their holy place so it should be under their rule. Long live Khalistan

.
Nope, this map is made up. Khalistanis only demand independent homeland for sikhs. Forget about Pakistan punjab, if they include haryana and himachal then they will become minorty again.

Bhai jaan

Keh lainay dain.

But your point is valid. However Sikhs are talking about creating buffer zone between China, Pakistan and Bharat.

How would that happen if they do not include areas beyond current borders of Bharati Punjab.

They can't occupy Himachal by force, LOL Himachal is majority hindu. Their best option is to become independent in next 5 years, otherwise they are going to become minorty in Bharati punjab. Already sikh population is down to 55% or below in IoP.

Unfortunately Sikhs have always missed historic opportunities only to regret them later. Lets see if Sikh leadership is up to the task this time around because they probably wont get another opportunity once they become a minority in their own land.

Bhai jaan

I felt the same way. Then I discussed this with a Sikh bro, who was nowhere close to anything called Khalistani idea. .
this is what he said.
He said, if someone attacks your holiest of the holy place using tanks, and big guns, the $hit never ends with "fringe" elements. Political assassinations of "religious" figures fire up the followers of that religion, we know what happened when Mughals killed one of the Sikh gurus.
Then he explained that attacking golden temple was 10000 times worse than killing a guru.
your take?
It was no longer a holy place when it was loaded with guns and bombs. The ppl who claim sanctity of place never take that point into consideration. Bhindranwale was given opportunity to surrender and move out but instead choose to fight from a religious place.
The very same ppl should be questioned why holy place was used to attack and kill ppl ?. The entire episode reeked of political opportunism which spiraled out of control. Bhindranwale was propped up by indira gandhi to weaken the akali's but the monster she reared went out of control (similar to musharraf's lal masjid) . After Bhindranwale was done with intimidating and subduing akali's he went after more power.

Even the rise of shiv sena is the same, they were propped up by congress to fight communists in bombay. Now they are on their own giving congress run for their money.

Either way one important fallout of the incident was that sikhs who were considered highly professional got a black badge of dishonor. When IB wanted to replace sikh body guards , indhira gandhi insisted on having them putting a lot of faith in them.

Though riots that place after indira's death was horrible, unacceptable but blue star operation was right one. One should ask the question why the govt allowed the situation to go so far that extremist elements can take over a religious place and hold the society to hostage.

khalistanis do not yell 'allahu akbar' nor they will kill sikh civilians.

Armed to teeth in army uniform
+
suicide attack yelling allahu akbar
+
indiscriminate firing at civiliance, attempt to bomb train filled with sikhs
+
few km from pak border, direct boundary with j&k

Just an another attack by pak LeT

I find it humorous to see posters indulging is school boy fantasies - showing ir- relevant maps of states which existed decades ago.

Is that dark chapter in Bharat totally closed?

Its as closed as the Babri Mosque - an unfortunate thing to happen but a ' must do'.

More than what happened in the Harmandir Sahab what impacted Sikhs is what happened thereafter across Punjab - extortion, Kidnapping, Rapes , Murders by the Pak sponsored elements. This is what went against them leading to an upsurge of anger & resentment among the people.

The straws Pak posters gleefully clutch at shall remain straws , quite like imagining faces & shapes in passing clouds children do.

Balanced analysis, Thanks.

I am sure there are "gleeful" posters from both sides of the border.

What we see in the region is nothing new. people have been fighting stupid wars in the name of ethnicity and religion, for a long long long long long time.

Look at our record of 70 years. See how forking bloody it is.

Peace

We need to educate the new generation of Sikhs regarding humiliating insult to their holiest place of worship and indiscriminate killings of more than a million innocent Sikhs by racist hindus.

As a military historian, I am wondering how that operation almost 30 years ago has impacted different communities in India. Assassination of Indian PM, mob violence by Hindus, resulting in 1000s of innocents Sikhs brutally mrudered, global reaction of Sikhs etc.

Is that dark chapter in Bharat totally closed?

or some sikhs have been slowly opening that closed door ever so slowly? sloganeering in Kashmir and Punjab, and other anti-government sentiments appear to be resurfacing after 30 decades of simmering.

I hope our region gets free from all such militancy and anarchy.

Amen

Oh they have good memory when it comes to protecting their culture and history.

Sikhs have moved forward and some radicals have shifted to canada or else where in Europe. Generations have changed in past 30 years. Since elections are due in punjab in next 18 months this issue will come up again for political maneuvering by various parties particularly Akalis and cong.

The militancy period of Punjab has never been able to create Hindu-Sikh divide and both are living peacefully in Punjab as ever before

.
Mr.Historian,
You could have come up with better question such as for how to encounter rebillion forces.
Regarding sikhs,I don't feel anything since they have disrespected our women, killed our men and slaughtered our young kids.I haven't forgotten their bloodbath nor screams of my mothers when they saw their daughters sacrificing lives for honour.Their voices still echoes into ears of our affected seniors who lost everything while crossing border.Their sin was that they dreamt of place where they will practice their religious rights and could live a happy life.
I see that now they are standing in same position as our forefathers were yesterday.I wasn't astonished when Indian constitution described them as ''long hair hindus'',but was astonished to find out that how sikhs could treat us like that when they knew that we were fighting for our rights and are having similar objectives as they did.
Regading that what would be the future of sikh's khalistani movement..I will say that it may ended up in same manner as did earlier via Operation Blue star, where their freedom fighters died in golden temple. It would be piece of cake for Mr.Modi to crush them, unless sikhs will unite as whole and accept to fight for generations or get united along with other rebellion groups in India. It might work for them.
Regards
