MANILA, Philippines - A Spanish firm was declared winner in the bidding for the supply of three medium lift fixed wing aircraft worth P5 billion.Defense Undersecretary Fernando Manalo told The STAR a notice of award has been issued to Airbus Military, one of the two firms that submitted offers for the project.“The notice of award was issued to Airbus last week,” he said. “The contract for the medium-lift fixed wing aircraft is now being prepared.”Air Force spokesman Col. Miguel Okol said the aircrafts will complement their C-130s and allow them to fly more missions.“As a whole this will enhance the total lift capability of the country,” he said.

The first of the three aircraft will be delivered in August 2015, while the second one will arrive in March 2016. The Air Force is expected to receive the third aircraft in September 2016.Airbus Military offered to supply C-295 planes for P5.29 billion, lower than the approved budget of P5.3 billion.The other bidder, PT Dirgantara Indonesia, was disqualified because its offer was not compliant with the technical specifications.Airbus said the aircraft is the most capable and versatile transport and surveillance aircraft.“The air assets can carry up to nine tons of payload or up to 71 personnel, at a maximum cruise speed of 260 kt or 480 km/h,” Airbus added.

Airbus Defence and Space has handed over the first C-295 medium transport aircraft to the Philippines Air Force (PAF) at its final assembly line in Seville, Spain.In February 2014, Airbus was selected to supply three C-295 planes to PAF at a cost of PHP5.29bn ($118m), to enhance help the overall lift capability of the air force.The aircraft is expected to play a key role in the modernisation of the force's transport fleet and will undertake a wide variety of military and humanitarian missions.Philippines Air Force spokesperson lieutenant colonel Enrico Canaya was quoted by INQUIRER.net as saying that the aircraft will undergo an acceptance process following arrival in the country."This is a medium-lift plane, an equivalent of Fokker. This will be used in transporting cargos, disaster response."

Philippines Defence Undersecretary Fernando Manalo earlier told philstar.com that the aircraft would be delivered to Clark Air Base on Luzon Island in the Philippines, between 23 and 25 March.The remaining two C-295 airlifters are scheduled to be delivered in 2016, and will supplement PAF's existing transport fleet consisting of three Fokker planes and three C-130 Hercules.The C-295 is a stretched variant of the CN-235 transporter. It is a tactical military transport aircraft designed to carry out tactical airlift, search-and-rescue, and maritime patrol and environmental surveillance missions in all-weather conditions.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) formally commissioned its third and last Airbus Military C-295 medium transport aircraft during ceremonies at Clark Air Base in Angeles City, Pampanga last Jan. 20.PAF spokesperson Col. Enrico Canaya said on Friday the ceremony was led by Air Logistic Command head Major Gen. Isagani Silva.Canaya said the third C-295 transport aircraft arrived at Clark Air Base last Dec. 11.The second C-295 was commissioned last Dec. 5 with President Benigno S. Aquino III gracing the event, while the first was turned over last March 30 with Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin in attendance.The three C-295 medium-lift fixed-wing acquisition program is part of the PAF modernization program amounting to Php5.3 billion.

The 220th Airlift Wing of the PAF will operate and maintain the aircraft.The PAF uses the medium lift aircraft for tactical and medium airlift requirements, and are essential to internal security operations in ferrying personnel and logistical requirements of different line/combat units to any part of the country.The timely deployment of troops and supplies is vital to ensure the success of any military operations.The Airbus Military C-295 is a new generation, very robust and reliable, highly versatile tactical airlifter able to carry up to nine tons of payload or up to 71 personnel, at a maximum cruise speed of 260 knots or 480 kilometers per hour.
