What's new

1999-2007 Musharaf's Golden Economy

Well, I can see the anger in ur analysis, hence I am afraid its way biased, specially the language, MusharMus Begged for meeting with Clinton, Right? And exactly when after him any given US president visited Pakistan? If u were an adult, U can clearly tell that Pakistan evolved during his Period, from digitalization of services, IT, Communication, Media, Education, everything simply evolved, i don't think it would be fair to deny it,

Didn't George W Bush visit in 2004 ?

. .
Did anyone ever wonder what happened to all that development as soon as Musharaf was ousted??
Did as the mega factories he setup evaporated in the thin air?
Did all the Dams he built broke and vanished like their was nothing?
Did all the roads he built were washed off by rains?
Was MCB and TIP sale bring such a huge amount of money that Pakistan was rolling in $$$s.

PIA and Steel mills was really that profitable, but a 6 months after he left it went into billions of billions of losses.

A person need at least an average IQ to analyze this, anyone with below average calls Musharaf's Era as Golden.

.
Great Nations always remember their Own loyal Sons and Daughter
Perhaps we will always be left to wonder , where would Pakistan be if Musharaf's term had lasted

1999-2018 instead of 1999-2008
The 10 years which followed him were the darkest days of Pakistan

16706-mush-1364625706-852-640x480.jpg

Musharraf came to power in 1999 when Nawaz Sharif had almost accomplished the goal of bankrupting Pakistan. What came after was a well remembered time for people like myself , who are not really News paper writers or are influenced by Indian money

One of the most vivid , visions I have of that time period include , massive positivism
Pakistan had just gained Nuclear Bomb and we were the Only Islamic Country with Nuclear weapons and as a Pakistani I was very proud of that achievement. Surprisingly, Musharraf was keen on Economy and it was very visible he was a man who understood the business or making money and selecting people who are best in this role . He himself of course was more interested in the affairs of military.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INCUBATOR
The highlights of Musharraf's Era perhaps include , provisioning the seeds of Information Technology in Pakistan , import of massive computers and distribution channels for IT across the country

a) Every Corporate Company in Pakistan was asked to setup a online Web Presence
b) Every Corporate Company in Pakistan was asked to share their Financials Online
c) Every Corporate Company was asked to have a working IT office so information
can be shared with consumers

REVIVAL OF NATIONAL ASSETS
All of Pakistan's National Assets were given an overhaul , with revival of National Companies
  • Pakistan International Airlines
  • Steeles Mills
  • Railways
All were Profit Making organizations , even when things started with a loss making scenarios

Musharraf believed in getting the best Pakistani Talent across the world and even if it meant paying Western Style Salaries to attract foreign based Pakistanis to return back home to help rebuild a robust Economy

Job Adds went as far as North America , for Jobs in Pakistan's Executive Job level I myself saw these adds myself , but I never was at that career level

Privatization of Pakistan's Banking Sector
Pakistan's Banking sector was privatized , and people who knew how to run a Bank were given the keys to the Banks , so that each Bank became profitable in their own rights

Once the Banks started to function lot of Customer facing Jobs were created Locally in Pakistan which created many Jobs in the Banking Sector

The period also saw , expansion of banks into many bank branches across Pakistan
and that also stimulated Property sale to Banks.

Telecommunication Sector Overhaul
Pakistan's Telephone system of old was very dependent on land lines and anyone born in 80's and 90's would remember how hard it was for people to get a traditional Land Phone line.

All these old Infrastructure problems were solved as Telecommunication companies started to set their base in Pakistan and gradually started to introduce Cell Phones in Pakistan
Cell phones changed lives of Pakistanis greatly and it was a major status symbol across the country to hold a cell phone and talk in it while walking or standing outside

Improved Cell phone infrastructure meant that more people were connected to each other and it was easier to reach out to do business deals

Handling of Abdul Qadeer Khan, Crisis

Musharraf Orchestrated a reasonable conclusion to the Abdul Qadeer Khan's crisis case
protecting both National Interest and handling his well being . New safe guards were introduced to ensure a Safe work environment.

Pakistan distanced itself from the Claim's Mr Khan made and treated the case as a one off interaction between Mr Khan and International country. Since Mr Khan enjoyed a massive popularity in Pakistan , he was kept in house enclosure protected by Armed officers to prevent a repeat of the issue

Freedom of TV and Media
Pakistan as a nation was mainly used to 1-2 TV channels most of the 70's and 90's
and in 90's Dish Antenna had spread across the nation however with Dish Antennas it brought unexpected vulgar shows into Pakistani homes

To counter that Musharraf introduced Privatization of TV channels so that Pakistani Audience can get access to more Pakistani Content , Political Discussions and shows inline with Pakistan's own values. 1999-2007 saw an explosion of TV channels on national cable lines

Growth of Anchors and reporters meant more shows which targeted and exposed corruption and it opened eyes of Pakistani people to possibility of viewing live events unfolding for first time 100% free of any censorship

Standard of Live reporting improved

BARTER TRADE
One exponent which is not talked about which highlights his brilliance is strategic usage of Barter trade to keep our import signatures low.

Pakistan negotiated Open Barter trade with various countries (ASEAN organization based nations) which meant that Pakistan was able to preserve their existing supply of Dollar and
Use the GDP surplus to pay down it's old dept from 80's and 90's

One of the most important achievement of Musharraf's time was a strong Will to Make Large payments on Existing loans he believed that the only way nation can move forward is if a sustained effort is made to reduce the National Debt

I was first introduced to the barter Trade concept during his term.

STRONG TRADE TIES WITH REGIONAL COUNTRIES
Pakistan during this time made efforts to have open trade with all regional countries

a) Afghanistan
b) Nepal
c) Sri Lanka
d) Iran
e) Middle East (Saudia , Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait)

Also Pakistan benefited with special trade status provided to it from USA during this period which helped Economy in a positive manner

Regional GEO political Game Post 911 events:

  • Strategic decisions were made to align with USA to ensure the war remains out in Afghanistan and did not cross into Pakistan
  • Positive Moves were made to Get F16 Fleet Upgraded and bring Pakistan-USA ties to a full normalization
  • Pakistan's USA stance also meant that Pakistan clearly drew a line against Terrorism which was the biggest defining moment for Pakistan
  • The Military Aid also helped Pakistan to Modernize much of it's forces
a) F16
b) Cobra Fleet
c) Various Advance Ammo for Usage
d) New fleet , MLU of old fleet
e) Navy Ship Acquisition
f) Access to Heavy Armored Personnel Carriers

  • The only negative element of this decision was towards later half of his term the Terrorist were desperate and caused massive Terrorism inside Pakistani borders which impacted economy
  • Musharaf knew that Terrorist were bad guys and he made 100% right decision

However 99.9% of Musharraf's Decisions during war of terror were 100% Correct

FREEDOM OF GWADAR CORRIDOR

DF-gAaPXcAArALJ.jpg

  • Gwadar would not possible before Anti Pakistan Elements were neutralized
  • Musharraf launch massive campaign to clean up Baluchistan from Anti Pakistan elements and this ensured that Gwadar project can get launched
  • People first started to hear about this region of Pakistan called Gwadar , which was suppose to be the next Dubai and every one suggesting others to buy property in that place as early as 2004-2005
hqdefault.jpg

Various water canal projects and dam projects were completed in Baluchistan during Musharraf's time to show the Baluchistan residents that Pakistan was serious about developing Gwadar

LAUNCH OF NADARA
  • Launch of the now common NADRA Card system and Bio-metric system first started with simple card registration for People of Pakistan's Citizenship
  • The launch of the card system was first attempt by Government of Pakistan to register all Pakistanis with a futuristic system
  • Passport services were improved nationally and also in international offices
Expansion of Dubai Style Property Management Companies in Pakistan

  • Musharraf's government also was able to attract investment in developing the coastal cities of Pakistan with property projects
  • Many banks from middle east first expanded into Pakistan , with opening branches and later some real estate companies also showed interest to own Property in Pakistan

One of the most ambitious projects which was discussed in his time was the crescent Bay
project however this particular project got stalled after Musharaf's time

An often overlooked aspect for Musharraf is the positive push he made to move Indian-Pakistan relations in a normal direction. He started with Kargil but due to being a man of vision he was able to sit down with India and Discuss peace for future

Diplomacy creates business opportunity , yes Pakistan bought defensive weapons under him but at same time his success was also due to a growing Pakistan-India ties at that time

Which eventually soured for worse , after a unknown entity based attack on Indian side

The moves were beneficial for Pakistan-India on a mutual level

So on one hard his life was threatened by Terrorist , their was WOT in Afghanistan , lot of pressure and India around on east side yet

Musharraf was solid as Rock , forging peaceful ties with all regional countries even India
To me at least that is a sign of a Genius of Man

  • He fixed our economy
  • He fixed our companies
  • He put our IT in right direction
  • He started investment in real estate sector
  • He improved our ties with all regional countries

He freakin banished traitors like Nawaz without dragging them into court and punishing them in accordance with Pakistani law. Banished for crying out loud what did he think it was? The 16th century?

.
It was mainly due to simple fact that we were being showered with dollars by helping uncle sam. Due to our alliance with US doors were open for trade along with military and civil Aid.

.
At times of musharaf ik also joined opposition against him and supported ppp and pmln indirectly be pressuring him to resign so every political party played its role in destruction of our economy

An old worth reading article on some of General Musharraf's achievements...

50 reasons Pakistan needs Musharraf

Prime Minister Gilani said at the National Assembly session to leave former president Pervez Musharraf to himself and let him exercise his right to a political career in Pakistan. President Zardari said that if Musharraf wants to return, he will have to cross the same bumpy road as him to get to the presidency or premiership. Nawaz Sharif, Chaudhry Shujaat and the remaining politicians, including religious parties, want him tried for treason, Dr Aafia’s case and introducing extremism in the country.

Since the launch of his party on October 1, Musharraf has been on a political offensive. He has talked about the deal with Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto. He has also reportedly accepted that the military trained jihadis to force India to the discussion table to resolve the Kashmir issue – a statement which he has now backtracked from.

His opinions and speeches have led most of his opponents to start wondering what he’s been smoking!

However, these are just some of the achievements of the man when he was in and out of uniform.

1. Nine world class engineering universities were developed and 18 public universities further developed.

2. Pakistan was ranked third in world banking profitability.

6. Industrial parks were set up throughout the country for the first time.

7. Mega projects such as the Saindak, Rekodiq, marble production, coal production, mining and quarrying were pursued.

8. Foreign reserves increased from $700 million to $17 billion.

9. The Karachi stock market went from 700 points to 15,000 points.

10. The literacy rate improved by 11 per cent.

11. Poverty decreased by 10 per cent.

12. Four dams were built: Mirani, Subakzai, Gomalzam, Khurram, and Tangi,

13. Seven motorways were completed or were under construction,

14. Gwadar, an advanced sea port, was developed,

15. 650 kilometres of coastal highways were constructed.

16. A historic 100% increase in tax collection (amounting to Rs1 trillion) was observed.

17. Large scale manufacturing was at a 30-year high, and construction at a 17-year high.

18. Copper and gold deposits were found in Chagai, worth about $600 million annually if sold.

19. A new oil refinery with the UAE that could process 300,000 oil barrels a day was established.

20. The industrial sector registered 26 per cent growth.

21. The economy was the third fastest growing economy after China and India .

22. The Institute of Space Technology was established.

23. Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University Quetta was established.

24. The University of Science and Technology, Bannu, was established.

31. The Media University in Islamabad was established

32. University of Education in Lahore was established

33. Lasbela University of Marine Sciences, Baluchistan, was established

34. Baluchistan University of IT & Management, Quetta (2002)

35. The Pakistan economy was worth $ 160 billion in 2007

36. GDP Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) was $ 475.5 billion in 2007

37. The GDP per Capita in 2007 was $ 1000

38. Revenue collection in 2007/08 was Rs1.002 billion

39. Exports in 2007were worth $18.5 billion

40. Textile exports in 2007 were worth $11.2 billion

41. Foreign direct investment in 2007 was $8.5 billion

42. Debt servicing in 2007 was 26 per cent of the GDP

43. The poverty level in 2007 was 24 per cent

44. The literacy rate in 2007 was 53 per cent

48. Pakistan now has a total of 245,682 educational institutions in all categories, including 164,579 in the public sector and 81,103 in the private sector, according to the National Education Census (NEC-2005).

49. There are now more than 5,000 Pakistanis doing PhDs in foreign countries on scholarship. 300 Pakistanis receive PhD degrees every year, in 1999, the number was just 20.

50. In total, 99,319 educational institutions increased in Musharraf’s era!

This was some of the good Musharraf delivered to Pakistan during his martially-democratic rule from 1999 to 2008. Strange how quickly we forget his foreign policy efforts, which helped elevate the image of Pakistan globally added acceptance value to our green passports. Even the Indians next door were ready to discuss Kashmir for a solution and praised the man for his sincerity, honesty and amicable handling of the issues.

Of course, he has the right to tell his opponents, “tameez say baat karo, warna munh toor jawab millayga” and it is true that most of them are keeping quiet since he said this in a recent interview with Express TV.

I feel he knows more than what he has already said so far, and may explode if not “handled with caution”. This goes for all the politicians cum armed forces of Pakistan. Hence, be careful everyone, the General is coming back as a civilian!

Looks like fixed rupee trend started in Musharraf era that continued well in to 2017. No wonder thats when Pakistanis started to consume everything imported. Rupee again fall down in value once cold war was over.

.
I cant believe people are praising Musharraf. Jahalat ki inteha. The economy didn't boom. It did ok. And that only bc the US rescheduled loans, deferred payments and gave handouts plus free toys for the forces. In return we let them kill our citizens without question, violate our airspace and destroy our allies in Afghanistan. We also allowed them to cause a rebellion in our own tribal areas that we then had to suffer for 10 years plus mount a massive military campaign against that we are still doing.
