16 Buddhist stupas found at Nateshwar Bangladesh

well we are very open, even we hold many animism and pagan festival in Papua and Kalimantan Islands to preserve local cultures and attract more tourist. The only thing we must consider a threat is the pace of our Industrialization and urban cultures accompanying them.

Yes Indonesia is overall a mature, confident and very accomodating, multi-tolerant country when it comes to its religious identity....way more than even a country like Malaysia.

Bangladesh and its people need about one full generation's time of education and development, as much free from religious domain and influence (which should be left to personal/family realm) as possible....so they gain an inbuilt respect and interest for all their cultural legacies and history just like Indonesia already has largely done...and has to large degree to begin with in their history (there was no painful legacy of political partition based on religion etc..)

They are not close to there yet, only when they are will they have a country that is able to attract tourists going on such a Buddhist or Hindu circuit etc....and sufficient general cultural-oriented tourists to begin with.

Because the key to tourism is not simply the promotion and improving infrastructure....but to get repeat visits from the tourists and also have them spread through word of mouth back in their home countries of the positive experiences to get even more interested. Then only you can gain tourism in the multi-billion dollar amounts sustainably....rather than just 100 or so million dollars a year.

But Bangladeshis overall are moving attitude-wise in the right direction over time in recent years (even with the problems) compared to say Pakistan (in my opinion), they just need lots of it (time, true multi-cultural development and experience) and they cannot afford to suffer any more reversals. So we will have to wait and see how this generation finishes and what the next generation will be like in this aspect. The proof will be in the pudding, not projections.

But in the meantime developing a major buddhist tourist circuit in just a few years time is quite laughable. They are struggling to develop just a general tourist inflow to begin with.

Time to build malls over these stupid shit, mall or madrasas; any will do...

That's not shit, that's your history, your country landmark and part of your identity. You must preserve them and restore them as it will be your country heritage for your grandchildren

The sooner you guys invade Bangladesh and reinstate Buddhism has the dominant religion the better off everyone will be. You guys won't even break a sweat, Dhaka will fall once again within a couple of days.
Those burmese will run away again...:D

It might not be such a bad idea. Bangladesh has chosen its path. If they want to deny themselves their cultural heritage then let them. It'll spare the world from desperate and cynical attempts to attract tourists.

.
Now, now there's no reason for these sort of actions in the 21st century.

That's ISIS/Taliban like behavior

HEh dealing with two 180 degree extreme views in one post! I like your style :D.

Like the word Bangladesh worldwide I suppose then ;)

First step to getting more Buddhist tourists and tourists in general is to have enough people in your country sensitized towards Buddhist culture and ideology. Either that happens over time or Bangladesh continues to be a relative tourism pariah as far as Buddhism goes (And in general most likely too). No one is interested in visiting Buddhist stuff in the middle of a perceived hijabi swamp land.

I could be flippant and say you could market india as the world rape destination, if you want to go that route.... How ever I will try to be civil....

Its a stupid idea to market Bangladesh as a buddist tourist destination, we don't have any REAL buddist heritage or iconic places of buddist interests. Why waste time and resources, trying to compete with Thailand, Cambodia or even myanmar?

If any one is going to visit Bangladesh they are going to visit for business purposes, this "hijabi swamp land" as you put it will be a major manufacturing destination like it or not. We can't build hotels fast enough to keep pace with demand not from tourists but from higher paying business clients.

As for people not knowing Bangladesh, I'm alright with that as long as the business community from around the world keeps coming and buying our good and services.

First prevent the bloggers who criticize your so called "Moderate Muslim Nation" from getting slaughtered, then we'll talk, sala lungiwala

Our country our rules, our issues to solve...just hold your dhoti up before it falls around your ankle.

:p:.....yeah go on please...........all we get is.....:blah:

No worries, your "could say blah blah" shows your lack of civility to begin with. No need to beat around the bush.

When have numbers and evidence meant anything to your lot anyways?

But please keep trying to be.

You could market Bangladesh as "Underwater land" or "Pole Vaulter paradise"....however I will try to be civil too :D.

Good, you are pragmatic. Now lets hope the same for the rest of the so called elite.

Considering you got a grand total of 150,000 tourists visiting you in a year (mostly from surrounding Indian states)....you better be getting some business arrivals too....just to keep your economy afloat. Somehow I doubt it though, and I doubt you can provide any hard numbers for such "business" arrivals being any more than the tourists either (arrivals are often included with overall tourist numbers when they are so low).

"Major manufacturing destination". Yeah ok. Some people dream about Buddhist circuits, others dream about a squadron of Su- 30...and this is your dream. It is good to have them. Unfortunately our definition of "Major" is going to be quite different.

The fact you cannot build hotels fast enough to handle the measly number growth (high in %, low in absolute) is illustrative by itself. We absolutely dwarf you when it comes to the hotel industry - by any measure, even if we compare just one of India's major cities....this is something you do not want to open a comparison on.

As for people not knowing Bangladesh, I'm alright with that as long as the business community from around the world keeps coming and buying our good and services.

You buy from them in larger quantity value wise than they buy from you. Combined trade wise, India trades 11 times more with the world with around 7.5 times the population compared to Bangladesh.

There is nothing in Bangladesh industry wise that people are somewhat interested in other than cheap clothes. Pretty shocking for a country of 170 million people, but I guess things can be even worse.

just made me wonder how many Buddhist and Hindhu complexes heritage still left and preserved in Bangladesh?

Budham Charanam Gachame....

Over time I hope Bangladeshis return to more Buddhist ideology and influence :)
LOL and in your wet dreams.

maybe Bangladesh should learn something from Indonesian tourism board. Our Borobudur, Kuta-Besakih Bali, Prambanan, Mount Tengger is a popular tourist spot in the world, all of them are Hindhu-Buddhist cultural objects.
The problem is we have absolutely nothing to offer for tourism. We are a much smaller nation with a very large population and thus a lot of spots that could have been tourist spots are being destroyed and also the negligence of governments to protect such places. Not to mention we have a very poor transportation system.

Not to mention that if we have a tourism industry it makes us more open to attacks from ISIS and that will also hurt our other sectors from foreign investment.

There are plenty, out of the five Buddhist Mahaviharas, two are located in Bangladesh.

There are dozens of other Buddhist monasteries, like:

Among the 100s of Hindu temples in Bangladesh, the most prominent ones are:

You have no idea, Bangladesh is considered as the next big thing in global tourism industry. There is a diverse variety of tourist attraction in a small piece of land which is quite rare in the entire world.

Daily Star once made an article where the author was saying we made a fatal mistake by leaving India in 1947. Look at India's Eastern states and you will yourself realize that it isn't the case.

Also, no we don't. We can't even save our tigers (the so called pride of the nation) and you expect us to be the next big thing in tourism. This site and their newspaper knows only to hype the government up. Although this is the case for most of our "media". An example would be the "No VAT" protests which were at first fiercely criticised by them at first.

Your naiive optimism reminds me of the plan in the 90's to turn our Himalayas territory into a ski resort. You can use any cheap trick you want, and there are probably some interesting Buddhist sites to visit, but no foreigners are ever going to consider BD as a tourist destination. Especially Burmese and Thais. The best you should aim for is to attract your diaspora to come and visit. You don't need to start building some weird Buddhist theme park for that.

We are not insisting you. I know you are jealous that BD will turn MM tourists other way. As you wish BD garments industry will move to MM. But in our case we dont take MM as our rival. Our planning is more diverse. Religious tourism is just another one. Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian tourism. Tourism based natural, archaeological, modern. While others are business, sports cultural medical education. Which will also support hotel, resort, shopping, transportation, food businesses/tourism.
