Turban ban in Shimla convent school?

A controversy broke out here over alleged ban imposed by a Convent school on wearing of turban by a Sikh student, with local Sikh organisation demanding that the administration take action against the school, which, however, denied the charge.

A student of local St Edward School complained to his parents that the Principal had asked him not to wear the turban and wear only a "patka" (small headgear) last month.

The local Guru Singh Sabha took up the issue with Deputy Commissioner and urged him to take action against the school.

Deputy Commissioner Onkar Sharma said "the agitated members of the Sikh community have given a representation to me against the decision of the school and it is a serious issue that involves religious sentiments of Sikh community.

However, the Principal of the school, John Bosco, when contacted, said that he had never disallowed the boy to wear a turban and only asked him on the first day of this session that why he was not wearing a "patka" like other boys.

He told me about some religious binding, so "I asked him to call his parents and the matter ended on March 5 after I met his parents and allowed him to come in whatever way he wanted to come". (why should the parents explain their son wearing a turban ? and these hypocrites started whining when christmas was also declared as a good governance day)


A "non-issue was being made an issue now with the boy's parents nowhere in the picture", the Principal said.

Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha President Jaswinder Singh said an unhealthy controversy had been raised in the school.

"We denounce the school authorities for behaving rudely with the boy for wearing the turban and asking him to come out of the class, go back home and come with 'patka' on his head," he said.

I am with the school here. I went to a catholic school and the brothers were the nicest and most dedicated kind in the entire school. It is their school and their rules. You should see how many kids they teach in those schools. In thousands and they have to maintain discipline. I have highest respect for these minority schools which teach kids from all religions.

You should see how many kids they teach in those schools. In thousands and they have to maintain discipline. I have highest respect for these minority schools which teach kids from all religions.

how does wearing a tilak make students undisciplined ?? and yeah they do teach a lot of students, do they do it for free ?? can't say abt school that u went to, but this school in hyderabad chaarges exorbitant amounts as school fees. moreover, do u hold the same logic when a hindu principle of a school operating under hindus debars a christian student for wearing a cross while allowing hindus to show there religious identity ?

this is no ordinary school sir , it is one of the famous convents in hyderabad and they could sue the father and NDTV for reporting a false news. If u have read the op, father of the child has already lodged a complaint at human rights organisation and govt. has asked for report from the rights body..

i plan to open a school and all those students who seek admission in my school should accept me as their god , yes thats right i am their god from now on and they should obey my command.

How can you say that? Considering their numbers, the number of such incidents may appear less overall, BUT the 'rate' may be same, we cannot be sure because no survey has been conducted so far on the rate(per capita) of incidents occurring due to religious intolerance based on community strength.
So, when you automatically go to the denial/doubting mode when it's about minorities, it indicates that you're biased towards them...
Moreover, you're doubting the same Indian media which is notorious for being 'secular'....

Don't get me wrong but the 'Secular' people of India need to come out of their Hindu-phobia and be actually Secular.

Principle of the school need to be desciplined for his rediculous punishment ..Having said that no need to paint all those christian schools in same colour ..They have been doing great work in our education system ..
