The ministry of defence (MoD) on Sunday allayed fears on the future of the nuclear submarine project at the naval Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam after the ‘accident’ on Saturday in which a civilian worker was killed.

Scientific adviser to MoD and DRDO chief Avinash Chander told reporters that it was an industrial accident and an inquiry had been ordered

The ministry said that the incident was not connected with any nuclear-related activity and would not adversely affect the project or the work of the navy. No defence personnel were involved in the accident. “The accident is in no way (connected) with any nuclear-related activity. The submarines are safe and the accident does not adversely affect the project activities or the activities of Indian Navy or DRDO,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

The Hyderabad Defence Research and Development Organisation, the apex body for all defence research and development activity, has been asked to probe into the mishap in which two other civilian workers were injured. The accident occurred when the L&T, an industrial partner, was undertaking preparatory activities for hydro pressure testing of a submarine tank at the Ship Building Centre.

According to a senior research officer at DRDO, the accident occurred when one of the doors of a tank gave away where the pressure was being tested. The contract worker who was close by was killed instantly. At around 2.30pm, some contract workers went to monitor the pressure gauge to determine the maximum pressure the hull could withstand. A heavy and huge iron sheet fell on them, killing one of them on the spot and seriously injuring others, said a DRDO source.

The recent accidents at both Mumbai and Visakhapatnam have brought to fore the safety and security of naval assets because of several mishaps involving submarines and vessels. Before the tragedy in Visakhapatnam, another accident in Mumbai resulted in the death of a Navy commander in a gas leak on an under-construction warship.

We had heard about four hulls S 1,S 2,S 3 & S 4 being built at L&T Hazira.
S 1-supplied to BARC for testing of PWR
S 2 - Arihant
S 3-Aridhaman
S 4 ??

From S 4,it will be larger.

Taliban Supporters should try try hard to achieve that.

Post-accident, lens on nuclear submarine projects

possible names are

Arinash , Arijith Arindrajith or Arindam ?(Though the last may not be used as Aridhaman is alsready used)
Ari-mardan Ari-Nashak Ari-Ghatak Ari Shikari Ari Mukta

Where does the article talks about these names??

no no....it doesnt say about name
it says,we are building a 4th submarine

but no source was available to back this up

i got the names from a site

I don't think S4 will be larger . It will be the same as Arihant .

It will be from S5 they will field a larger SSBN with more powerfull naval reactors .

The article which Kurup posted says that S4 is the name of nuclear reactor used in 3rd submarine and INS Arihant is called as S2

The explosion at a nuclear submarine building facility in Visakhapatnam that killed a worker on Saturday was “industrial and not military”, defence research authorities have claimed.

The project is being executed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is monitored closely by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The DRDO, that is spearheading the nuclear submarine building project, has formed a team that has been asked to give a report in a week.

“We cannot say we can give out full details of what happened and how it happened but we can say that we or the Indian Navy were not responsible for it,” a DRDO official said.

India’s nuclear submarine building project is still in its infancy despite three decades of effort. The first of the three vessels that have been planned, the Arihant, was “launched” in 2012. Its nuclear reactor went critical last August. The submarine is still going through harbour trials. Sea trials, estimated to last 18 months, are expected to begin within weeks.

It is understood that Saturday’s accident was on machinery that was being readied for integration into the second of three nuclear submarines that are in different stages of construction at the Ship Building Centre (SBC) in Visakhapatnam.

The responsibility for that equipment, probably a high-pressure tank, was with Larsen and Toubro, one of the corporate participants in the project, DRDO sources said.

In Chennai today, DRDO director-general Avinash Chander said: “Also, we have to see whether there was a human error which caused this or any equipment. That’s why it will take some time and our team is on the job.”

All equipment that go into the submarine are separately tested on the ground before being integrated.

Defence ministry sources said work at building No. 5 of the SBC, where Saturday’s incident was reported, had been halted. They said there was no sign of contamination at the site because the machinery was not connected to the nuclear reactor.
