054A Photos from HP Shipyard + Varyag Photos

I've come across some really good photos of new 054A from HP shipyard and recent photos of Varyag.

First for the 5th 054A from HP.

More detailed photos of the 5th 054A, looks like most of the sensors are already installed.

The 4th 054A from HP, No 548, resting in the dock with Haijian-75, one of the new cutters.

Now, recent photos of Varyag from Dalian. It looks like a lot of work has been done since the last set of photos we've seen. The island is now all painted, although the sensors are still yet to be installed.

There are still many boxes, containers, cables and generators sitting on its deck. I will let you guys make judgment on how it's progressing.

No.548 (Yiyang) is the 7th type 054a,made by HP shipyard in Guangzhou.
That one in the first pic is the 9th.
And No.549(Changzhou) the 8th 054a is made by HD shipyard.
No.548 & No.549 are still on testing,haven't join PLAN yet.

Varyag's contruction began before the break-up of Soviet Union. The incompleted ship was given to Ukraine which later sold the ship to China.

Under US pressure, the Uktainian used explosive blew up the internal structure of Varyag before they let Chinese towed it back to Dalian port in North East China.

Since then China has been studying the ship and rebuilt it back to current status.

That is NOT the Type 054A. It's the Type 054B, which is an upgraded unit of Type 054.

Best way to distinguish between type 054A and type 054B is in the hull shape and bow area.

Well the B variant have a fold near the bow highlighted in red which is similar to the original type 054. I suspect they enlarged the bow area when making the transition from type 054 to type 054A to accommodate the vertical SAMs and then now they are making modification to the bow to make it more stealthy.

It is not 054B, but 054A.

054A have 2 batch, the first batch is 529 style, the second batch change the shape back to 054 style, which is showed on 548. grab a pic of 525/526, you will see same shape.


The configration of all 054A is same.

Can you give any credible sources to confirm PLA Navy has a new type of 054B?? As I know China has ordered 16 054As and there is no such so-called 054B currently.

I think you get some misunderstanding.

Both 054 and 054A was classified as one class frigate.

When people mention order 16 unit 054, it means

2x054+2x054A

4x054A

4X054A

4x054A


BWT, the last batch is not confirmed yet. PLAN may go to 052C+ or 056 class

It depends on the official designations. I used type 054B to follow on sinosoldier's post. Basically the changes can be judged significant enough to warrant a change from A to B for clarification but it is not officially recognised naming system. The US also have different sub-variants of F-16.

So I guess we can just call them type 054A-2 for batch 2 improved.
But I think putting type 054 and type 054A both under 054 is a bit too far - the type 054A is a significant improvement in capabilities over the type 054
