dude...there was already a huge resistance in afghanistan against the invading commies. The mujahideen were fighting but lacked weapons. They were still using ww2 era weapon like the enfield smle. NATO gave them ak47 and stinger, saudis gave them funds and pakistan trained the mujahideen.
