​

3rd stage ? ➡ probably a liquid propellant satellite bus to allow re-ignition of thrusters​

Iran's Zoljanah SLV has the old WWII era 4 graphite jet vanes for the steering, on Both 1 & 2 stages, NOT flexible nozzle (like the Salman rocket motor).

It is therefore the Sejjil-3 solid propellant missile of 1.5 m diameter, with an added 3rd stage from the Safir-1 second stage.

I wish this program is left alone and ran by civilians and consistently funded. This is critical for Iranian civil space program. Space is the future and Iran needs to rapidly progress in this field as it has so many secondary benefits for ordinary Iranians.

The country needs competent and mature project managers and directors all across. The space program is a pathway to produce such personnel.

Zolfaghar family missile including the Dezful are claimed to have got added an exo-atmospheric maneuvering capability.

Purpose is countering THAAD and Arrow-3, that would make Iran's ballistic missile obsolete.

Unless thrusters are placed on the Reentry Vehicle, very high altitude aerodynamic maneuvering could be done with large fins.

In the case of Zoljanah, as a satellite space launcher there is no need for such fins in the second stage.

But, in the case of the Sejjil-3 ballistic missile, it would be totally different.

The depressed trajectory employed by Iskander-types keeps the missile in the atmosphere not above the Karman Line's 100 km altitude where space begins, and where air density at 50 km elevation is sufficient for use of the fins mounted at the aft end. This enables the terminal dive and steering for precision delivery of warhead.

The goal is to keep apogee low, thus have shorter time of flight, as well as later radar detection. Downside is reduction of range.

The question now is to replace the liquid propellant third stage from the Safir-1 SLV, with a better aerodynamic fairing.

The best solution for the long term is a Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV).

The reduction of range downside from a depressed trajectory can be make up with the HGV's glide phase.

Other HGVs fly on a ballistic or depressed ballistic trajecotry and add to it a glide phase.

With this new Sejjil-3 IRBM, Iran is not only inching closer in the same league as Israel's Jericho-3 YA-4 ICBM, but even able to thwart the enemies' missile defences, thus offsetting the regional balance of power!


Jericho-3 YA-4 ICBM

This is especially true as Israel WMD deterrence is becoming more real than ever.

The only tests were done under the guise of the civilian solid propellant 3 stages Shavit, Shavit-I and Shavit-II space launchers. All measuring 1.35 meters diameters and 17 meters to 22 meters long.

To perfect its Jericho-3 YA-4 ICBM, of 1.56 meters diameter and 16 meter long, components are being tested far in outer space under the guise of space exploration.

Beresheet-1 lunar orbiter and lander on 11th April 2019 was successful enough, as it validated the Israeli Post Boost Vehicle technologies. Landing was not the most important goal. Orbital insertion and deorbiting were simulating the technologies used in Post boost Vehicle.

Beresheet-2 will test 2 separate warheads' guidance from release in orbit until impact to their targets on the lunar surface (though a landing is used to avoid a direct hit).

He added, “Up to now, North Korea has launched satellites four times under the right of “peaceful use of space”.

North Korea referred to “space development” three times in the newspapers this month only, insisting that “peaceful space development is a legitimate right of sovereign states” in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper on the 25th.

Lee Chun-geun, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Science and Technology Policy, said, "If you load a long-range rocket with a warhead instead of a satellite that makes a re-entry it into the atmosphere, it is a long-range missile." The intelligence authorities believe that North Korea is also considering using a mobile launch pad (TEL) instead of launching a satellite from Tongchang-ri. Commissioner Lee Chun-geun said, "There are very few instances of shooting satellites from mobile launchers," he said. In its July 2006 resolution (No. 1675), the UN Security Council banned the launch of satellites, such as the use of launch vehicles that applied North Korean ballistic missile technology.

Ballistic Trajectory Jericho-3 ICBM Vs Depressed Trajectory Sejil-3 IRBM

Compare the huge size of the Sejil-3 IRBM versus the tiny Jericho-3 ICBM.

Indeed, the North Korean depressed trajectory IRBM travels entirely in the atmosphere, thus encountering tremendous drag forces.

It must compensate with extra propellant. But it allows to change course, thus avoiding missile interceptors and delaying detection by ground radars.

Therefore the range is shortened to IRBM instead of ICBM.

The 2nd stage fins are therefore fully usable contrary to the Jericho-3's 2nd stage that is finless, as the Jericho-3 follows a ballistic trajectory in the space vacuum above the 100 km altitude Karman line.

The game-changing North Korean unique design of depressed trajectory missile is made of an improved 3rd stage, instead of the 1.25 meter diameter liquid propellant Safir-1 stage, with more powerful solid propellant engine, Post Boost Vehicle, 2 miniaturized high-yield thermo-nuclear warheads, and an optimized fairing nosecone.
