WASHINGTON: The new generation of Pakistani military officers is more sensitive to terrorism than its predecessors, says Robin Raphel, former assistant secretary of state for South Asia, rejecting a claim by the Afghan ambassador that those officers are more likely to back terrorism than current Pakistani commanders.

At a weekend seminar on Afghanistan at the Aspen Institute, California, America’s most prestigious forum on security issues, Ms Raphel said a lack of clarity in Washington’s policies was preventing Pakistan from breaking its links with the Haqqani network.

Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan’s ambassador in Washington, spoke before Ms Raphel and urged the international community to stop supporting Pakistan.

“Pakistan is moving toward becoming a state that supports terrorism as an element of foreign policy, to a state that believes in terrorism,” he claimed.
He alleged that the new cadre of officers in the Pakistani military believed in terrorism as an ideology and as those officers rose through the ranks, they would create more problems for the world.

“If we continue to give Pakistan a free pass, imagine the conflict at a time when the military is one million strong, has nuclear weapons, has sophisticated intelligence and believes in extremism at its core,” he warned.

He also urged the international community to work with the Pakistani civilian leadership to keep the military in check.

Since Pakistan’s ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary decided not to attend the seminar because of a recent experience in Washington where he was hooted and ridiculed at a similar event, Ms Raphel was apparently the only friend Pakistan had in the seminar. She told the Afghan ambassador that his statement was “a little bit misleading” and inaccurate.

Ms Raphel, who is an old friend of Pakistan and had to face an FBI inquiry last year because of her alleged links with Islamabad, also disagreed with Mr Mohib’s claim that “terrorism and Pakistan are equated”.

She said Pakistan was one of the numerous countries that have a “proxy” in Afghanistan. It was likely to keep that proxy as long as uncertainty existed on the outcome of the conflict, she added.

The discussion about Pakistan’s role overshadowed the primary topic of the panel discussion, the Trump administration’s Afghanistan policy, expected later this month.

Ms Raphel noted that during a visit to Pakistan earlier this month, Senator John McCain too asked Islamabad to do more and what he heard from the Pakistanis was: They too are waiting for an overall US policy.

this guy have no personality, we need a person who can roast them. Maybe Mosharraf Zaidi/Moeed Pirzada as spokesman of Pakistani mission in US, both are suitable for answering people such as afghan ambassador, zalmay khalilzad and their bharati cheerleaders..

This is the agenda our present government is following.I don't think government have the ability to asses the repercussion of this American policy because the government lacks the vision. Our strong military is a major binding force of Pakistan.By weakening our army we are weakening Pakistan. After the blessings of Allah today we are not Afghanistan, Iraq,Syria or Libya that is due to our strong army which is handling America India and Israel with limited resources.

For those who don't know the Afghan swine Hamdullah Mohib: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamdullah_Mohib

Dr. Hamdullah Mohib was born in a small village north of Jalalabad in 1983. He was the youngest of eleven children. Mohib's father worked in Kabul as a court clerk.

Dr. Mohib's family fled Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion, becoming Afghan refugees. The family returned home after the end of the Soviet invasion, but fled once more to Pakistan after a renewed civil war broke out.

These Afghan b@stards have been living in Pakistan in peace and security. They escaped opiumland and fled to Pakistan. Today, they badmouth the same country. Scum of the earth is what these Afghan pigs are, but it is fine. We need these snakes to reveal their true colors.

Afghans ate too busy indulging in bacha bazi. Which has their full attention and efforts. Afghans have zero commitment to take on their own home grown militants spread across their countryside. Afghanistan is the centre of terrorism. The nation has been torn and oppressed by foreign powers and today it is oppressed by Hindustan. Afghans need someone to blame it's their evil nature to do so. Pakistan desperately needs to seal ALL entry points with AFG.

we are just fighting to defend our self and prepared to fight back outside our territory, because two front war is being imposed on us so we are retaliating with all front & already engulfed the enemy with our allies, so that enemy cant get more space.. now it's up to enemy either stay away from our interest or be ready for their own destruction.

we committed to help U.S. we are the man of our words that is why we are helping U.S in Afghanistan in order to get rid of militancy not only in our soils but also in Afghanistan. but yet we are not responsible for anybody incompetence, India is actively involved to sabotage our interest whether it's CPEC or in Afghanistan, neither we committed with India nor with Indian ally to safeguard their interest in Afghanistan But only U.S if U.S really with us. it's as simple as cup of tea.

interesting panel this

Robin Raphel actually did not refute that main point of Pakistani military using terrorism and extremism as its strategy - she says the new breed of military officers are 'sensitive to internal terrorism'. If you listen to the whole section, there is more agreement than disagreement on our having to find ways to get Pakistani military to stop going more extremist in its ideology.

It is a shame that Pakistani ambassador did not attend; it is cowardly of him and especially given that he was roundly booed and ridiculed in his last outing, why is Pakistan still keeping him in that position? This in fact is admission of guilt.

Don't know whether to laugh or to cry.

shame on Pakistan. Kuch to ghairat karo yaar.

From sartaj aziz to this guy. These oldies are a burden on this country. No vision. No aggression. No intellect even. Worst than statues.
