Doctor, the profession that is considered as the most respectable in Pakistan has dropped horribly in quality as the focus shifted from wellbeing of patients to just monetary gain. This particular study reveals a similar result as well.

According to the biggest international study carried out on consultation time of doctors published in BMJ Open (British Medical Journal), doctors in Pakistan give 1 minute 47.4 seconds on average to each patient.
This not only is alarming but also reflects the concern of the health expert which ultimately serves as the primary reason for deteriorating health quality. Mostly the consultation charges in Pakistan lie between 1500-2000 rs on average, minus the unmeasurable things like waiting time and travel expenses.

According to the study, Bangladesh lies on the bottom of the list with staggering 48 seconds on average whereas Sweden is on top with high patient satisfaction rate and average consultation time of 22 minutes 30 seconds. The researchers also mentioned in the journal that countries with low consultation time also have a poor health quality. This let alone suggests how both variables are interlinked.

To further dig out the consequences and impact on public health on a broader magnitude, data from 67 countries and 178 relevant studies was used. In 15 countries, the consultation time was less than 5 minutes whereas, in further 25 countries, it was about 10 minutes.
In developed countries, the stats were better as in the US the average recorded time was over 20 minutes whereas over 10 minutes in the UK.

In SA we take only 4 and half years + 1 year house surgeon to become a doctor.:D

I can personally tell you that in Pakistan specialist doctors in Pakistan do not give even 1 minute and 47 seconds as mentioned in this report, to patients. few years back I have to consult neurosurgeons for a surgery and even went to the specialist doctor who operated upon Malala initially and trust me he and his penal of doctors at his private hospitals were giving hardly 40 seconds even to the patients' examination . The waiting rooms were full of patients and I was worried it will take long hours when my turn will come closer but trust me only in few minutes they called my name and when i went in the doctor and his penal straight away said bb you will be put to surgery and thats all no much consultation. just in 30 seconds they said I can go and next patient was called in. It disappointed me and i decided not to get surgery done at his hospital

in Govt hostpitals like Mayo, jinnah its 7-10 sec for normal check up like cold, cough, even fever.. specialists take 10 minutes...
specialists takes 20 to 30 minutes in pvt...

U fortunately in developing countries patient volumes are high and doctors are less

Adding to it our fees are pretty low comparing to developed nations. There is already cut
throat competition. So many doctors prefer not to spend time on examination of patients

Did they (Surgeon) find anything there? mean in head....:D

Some time they do operations just for the sake of money, Once doctor (retired military surgeon) told me there are more them 11 things in head if I remove (to show me as proof) there will be no ill effects since these glands became useless after adulthood.

I agree. I consulted a Neurologist to try my luck against genetically transferred Essential Tremor. That Dr hardly gave me 5 minutes still knowing that the issue is also psychologically linked. We Pakistanis are power hungry and choose profession to rule more than serve.

Here in the Netherlands if you go to a specialist,it takes at least half an hour(depends on the time needed,no time limit).
If you go to a normal doctor 15 minutes but you can ask for double that when you make an appointment.

Good doctors generally don't waste much time on patients having simple issues (most of patients are this variety). They prefer to give their valuable time to more challenging and complicated cases. I personally don't give more than 30 sec to routine cases, while I have all the time in the world for difficult and complicated cases. Meanwhile I work more than 14 hrs daily (if you include studying to keep myself updated for my profession). I devote very less time to family. Now they don't complain even. :D

Hey welcome back where you had been. Honestly speaking in Subcontinent only those who have complicated serious issues go to Specialist doctors. Why should family compliant ? you earn for them. The patient pay you so they have every right to complain

1) Been a silent watcher.
2) See from our point of view things look differently. Like in my speciality, I don't give patient attention till he is very serious or condition my become very serious soon. Like for example, a walking/talking patient my not require my intense attention. :D While unconscious will.
3) Third point: We don't practice medicine just to earn. Any person having this attitude may not survive for long in this field. It is more of passion. There are few motivating factors. The glamour/service/money in that order. Smile on discharged patient's face is the highest form of wealth.
I have seen even the most greedy and blood sucking doctors, do a lot of charity for patients who CAN NOT AFFORD treatment on daily basis
