You Think the Air in Beijing Is Bad? Try New Delhi

By HEATHER TIMMONS

NEW DELHI—Beijing’s air pollution has reached such toxic levels recently that the Chinese government is finally acknowledging the problem – and acting on it.

But in New Delhi on Thursday, air pollution levels far exceeded those in Beijing, only without any government acknowledgement or action. :bounce: It is not the first time pollution in India’s capital has outpaced that in China.

The level of tiny particulates known as PM 2.5, which lodge deep in the lungs and can enter the bloodstream, was over 400 micrograms per cubic meter in various neighborhoods in and around Delhi Thursday, according to a real-time air quality monitor. That compared to Beijing’s most-recent air quality reading of 172 micrograms per cubic meter. (The “Air Quality online” link to the left of the Delhi website gives you real-time monitoring of Delhi’s pollution levels.)

At the University of Delhi’s northern campus at 12:30 p.m., the reading for PM 2.5 was 402 micrograms per cubic meter; in the eastern suburb of Noida it was 411; at the Indira Gandhi International airport it was 421.

Beijing’s government on Wednesday introduced emergency measures to curb pollution, ordering cars off the roads and factories to shut down, and warning citizens to avoid activity outside. The measures came after two straight days that the readings were higher than 300, a level the United States Environmental Protection Agency considers “hazardous.”

The forecast for Delhi’s air pollution Friday is “critical,” according to the Ministry of Earth Sciences. So far, though, Delhi’s government has made no announcements about the city’s air pollution, nor introduced any emergency measures, a spokesman for chief minister’s office said. Sheila Dikshit, the chief minister, said in an interview in December that the city could not keep up with the factors that cause air pollution.

Beijing’s air quality is so bad that living there is like living in a smoking lounge, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The levels of air pollution Bloomberg cited as Beijing’s average were half that of New Delhi early Thursday afternoon.

Air Pollution in New Delhi Was Much Worse Than Beijing Thursday, But Indian Government Is Not Acting - NYTimes.com

One conclusion: Indian democratic government doesn't care about its constituents, and is far worse than Chinese authoritarian government!

LOL! Some Indian friends were laughing at Chinese polluted air as "gas chamber". True. But your gas chamber is twice more toxic than China's, maybe due to your democracy nature.

Democracy kills you. Really.

Mumbai will be much worse than Delhi and beijing!

@A.Rafay if you dont know mumbai than you shouldnt say something doesnt make sence.... The air in mumbai flows from arabian sea and also mumbai has jungle just outside thane (however its under threat now).... That helping mumbai cope with pollution.... But in china situation far worse.... In western world they make fun of china by saying china most polluted country and india has alot poverty.... But yes india will over take china soon as india will no.1 in population and that will increase pollution if theres no clean energy.... Mind you india use coal for energy....
here about thane jungle and how population growing there.... Outside thane use to be jungle but now population destroying it and making hotels, buildings, more theme parks and god knows what else....

says a 50 cent commie staying on welfare of a USA- a democratic country...

When I learnt some Chinese medicine decades ago, the general teaching said: a set of medicines can be beneficial to one type of person, but it can potentially be a poison for another type of person.

Democracy seems working great for US, but not for some others, as revealed by FACTS.

BWT, I suggest your democratic government creates more 50c position so not so many kids would be starved to death.

I agree that China is so polluted, but you deny that India is twice as more polluted as China. -- that's the difference between us.

China agrees that China is so polluted and its government is taking actions, but your whole more 2x more polluted India, instead of fixing its own problem, stars to pulling China's leg. -- that's the difference between your two countries.

When you say bad thing about pollution of China, you factually say twice as much bad thing against India.

Sorry, did I hear you say something about "our lord planet sun"? Here is what "our lord planet sun" in India:

Delhi has thick fog throughout winter but unlike polluted Beijing, Delhi don't face problem of smog. Nature speak more than bullshit news article

All those idiotic and emotional rantings aside, a big problem in China (and I suspect being worse in India) is the refining techniques for oil. The US has a lots of cars but the pollution level has remained lower, because of the emission standard imposed on vehicles and the purity of their gasoline.

The refining technology in China is still behind of those Western countries, and hence the air pollution. Now another problem is our coal usage, which accounts for the majority of our energy output.

Now the last point, and this is a point that many Chinese men do not want to acknowledge, is the epidemic addition to cigarette, which emits lots of dangerous chemicals into the air. Money, greed are driving the cigarette companies and there is not enough anti-smoking awareness in China, of the many dangers it presents such as erectile dysfunction, lung cancer.
@gpit, India is probably a lot worse than China in terms of pollution, but that hardly is China's problem. The Himalaya is high enough to keep all the toxic air in the subcontinent. We should just take care of our own business. I have been to India only once, and once is enough. I will not go there again.

India is 100 times better then China in terms of pollution... if it gives you solace to pretend otherwise so whatever rocks your boat. be happy.. if you do not come better for India. :P

and remember It is China who is the low cost manufacturing hub of the world? isnt it? so all those factories producing tonnes of pollutants lie in China and not India. and you dream that India is more polluted then China.. in your dreams!

Chinese Academic says air pollution in China is more frightening than SARS virus !!

from the article:

The worst smog in decades has hit many parts of China this year.

Smog covered 1.43 million square kilometers on Tuesday, including Beijing and Tianjin municipalities, and the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

As of 10 am Wednesday, PM 2.5 was still the main pollutant in Beijing, with an average reading of 310 micrograms per cubic meter over the past 24 hours.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences estimated that the recent smog across China has affected more than 800 million people, :woot: China Central Television reported on Thursday.

On Tuesday, pollution in Beijing reached 517, a number that is considered “beyond index.”

This is according to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, which is considered the most reliable measurement of air pollution in the city. The embassy has reported pollution as high as 755 earlier this month.
