'you are wearing is inappropriate'Bengaluru girl shamed by an auto diver for wearing a dress

moral policing disgusts me

and rightly so.

your point ?

well, you particularly named saudia as if india doesn't have "moral policing"... in fact, the presence of this wrong kind of policing, at varied levels, would be larger in india than anywhere else in the world.

we must acknowledge that india ( as with pakistan too ) generally has not yet progressed beyond pre-1947 era and we must analyze which political system has prevented progress.

there is no comparison with saudia, they have official religious police for vice prevention, they keep their women in those awful black bags and there are about millions more reasons why saudi is much much worse than here.

India, though far from perfect (but then which society is?), is definitely not the worst offender of moral policing in the world.

don't club us with saudi and pak etc, we have progressed a lot since 47, in fact we have progressed a lot in just these past couple of decades as a society, attitudes are much more liberal to many social issues now than in the past.. more women working and running successful businesses than ever before, more unmarried young people living on their own, even attitudes to homosexuality are more relaxed now etc

we are, by and large (by poor world and eastern standards) a liberal society and there is no comparison to any of your islamic states like saudi or pak.

.
that is illogical.

if ten people arrange themselves in a area to "politely" advise ladies on dressing and this happens every day the area will become a oppressive environment.

these "polite advisers" to make themselves more legitimate can declare themselves under the banner of some religious or "cultural" organization or the "youth circles" that are present in certain parts of south india ( bangalore is in the south ).

this is how groups like 'ram sena' or the tableeghi mullahs in mangalore have been able to create a oppressive "moral policing" environment or why bangalore's formerly cosmopolitan muslim population ( 15 to 20 years ago ) now looks no different from taliban rule environment.

i am not saying i like females to be clothed flashily and talk in rude and arrogant manner ( including pretend-americanisms like "gross", "a*sehole" ) and their entire personality screaming "fake" - i myself want to kick the faces of such females, but this lady's case wasn't that.

why are you propagating a lie??

kanhaiya did not flash to any lady... he was supposedly urinating in a public place in the campus and a then female student ( she's now a teacher in delhi university ) confronted him ... if he was doing the public urinating then he was wrong but one must realize that this female teacher is now a bullet in the armory of the sangh in their anti-jnu campaign.

this is actually the result of haphazard urban development in india where appearance of a city arrives but not a city mentality... this is common all over india where the new industry of it/services suddenly created enough money to put city-like infrastructure hither-thither either in small towns or created new cities ( gurgaon and noida ) or brought in emigrant populations to older cities but who carried reactionary values... one result example was the december 2012 delhi gang-rape/torture case ( amaanat or real name jyoti singh ).

such mentalities exist because india's political system does not concentrate on turning indian citizens into progressive thinkers... much of the background india remains in the pre-1947 era.

this report is about intrusion into a lady's reasonable freedom to wear the summer frock she wants and you are going on and on with your nationalist sentiment.

it is strange that you are supporting this auto driver's wrong and reactionary "advise" but you are among the ones who much earlier verbally and physically lynched kanhaiya kumar for calling for freedom from hunger, capitalism, feudalism and brahminism.

forget about bharat and all, concentrate on saving the daily suiciding people within india and the daily hungry india and the daily homeless people.

you are portraying yourself to be a misogynist, capitalist and a tableegh jamaati or talibani.

firstly, about your reference to marriage, why should a marriage involve money?? shouldn't you being a muslim ( as per your claim ) be proposing a simple and compulsory court marriage system attended by only five people including the court officer?? since you are concerned about poor men not able to afford marriage why are you not recommendation eradication of traditional money-heavy rituals ( marriage attended by 300 guests minimum ) and propagation of the cleanliness of socialism??

tell me this - despite 60+ years of love stories in indian and pakistan cinema why does "honor killing" still exist in both countries in 2016?? was "honor killing" imported from the west?? india and pakistan are "honor killing" capitals of the world, after all, india more so.

and despite these films portraying heroes who battle feudals why does feudalism, capitalism and every kind of socio-economic oppression still exist in both countries?? even certain western countries have a welfare system that really should have been the system of so-called islamic republic of pakistan... the west really is more islamic than the non-socialist muslim-majority countries.

what is the connection between harmful smoking ( harmful personally and societally ) and some lady wearing a knee-length summer frock?? i too want smoking and drinking totally banned.

in fact, frocks and skirts are mostly not seen in india now whereas they were prevalent until the 90's... the so-called development of india after 1995 ( it/services industry ) has actually made the background conservatism and reactionaryism more widely applied.

@Levina , your coolest pdf member nair. :)

that is such a contradictory bunch of lines !!

edit : it's like the letter read out in the film 'border' : chacha ka payr toot gaya hai, baaki sab theeki hai...
idiot, read my post again.

this isn't saudi arabia, auto guy had absolutely no business telling her what is appropriate to wear.
first of all you heard her version and think its true? what about the auto drivers version, she might have some argument over fare and then she could have turned it into a ruckus of slut shaming to act as a victim.
These sort of things happen when you only listen for #FemiNazi version and ignore completely the other sides version as it happened with rohtak sisters who bashed up guys on bus.

This Bengaluru girl was slut-shamed by an auto diver for wearing a dress

A few days ago, an auto-driver inMumbai body-shamed a girl and asked her to get out of his auto because she was 'too fat'. On April 24, a Bengaluru-based journalist Aishwarya Subramanian claimed that an auto driver slut-shamed her and advised her to not wear the kind of short clothes she was wearing.

In a Facebook post that has gone viral, Subramanian narrated the entire incident and posted pictures of the auto-driver. She'd even tweeted about it. As soon as she got out of the auto, she wrote, "The Metre was 40 but I asked him to keep 50 as it was hot outside. And then he looks at me for a second and says - 'please don't mind me but what you are wearing is inappropriate'. I stand there shocked."

Subramanian, who claimed to be on the verge of crying, told him it wasn't his business. A few men gathered taking note of the hullabaloo and even agreed with the driver's view. "Apparently a girl who lives in a society like mine should be dressed more modestly and like a woman," they believe. But then, two men from a store Subramanian often visits stood in her support, and "told the auto driver and the moral police" that she could wear what she wanted and when she wanted.

"You want to know why we fight for our dignity? Because even the clothes we wear makes us sluts. What is the point in being a girl in this country anymore? I feel so embarrassed," wrote Subramanian.

Soon, she posted the auto diver's pictures on Facebook, after he gave his consent with the logic that he believed the public would agree with him.

Read full posthere:

This man's name is srikanth. About five minutes ago I got out of his auto. The Metre was 40 but I asked him to keep 50 as it was hot outside. And then he looks at me for a second and says - "please don't mind me but what you are wearing is inappropriate". I stand there shocked. And then I tell him clearly that as long as I am paying he has no right to tell me what I can or cannot wear. Then he gets out of the auto to tell me why I shouldn't be dressed like a slut (I am wearing a white summer dress that reaches my knee). A few men gather as I take pictures. One man who has gathered tells me that the auto driver is right. Apparently a girl who lives in a society like mine should be dressed more modestly and like a woman. I am about to start crying at this point. This is the first time I have been so publicly slut shamed. Thankfully two men who came from a junk food store I frequent and told the auto driver and the moral police that I get to wear what I want when I want. I walk away feeling shell shocked and ashamed. You want to know why we fight for our dignity? Because even the clothes we wear makes us sluts. What is the point in being a girl in this country anymore? I feel so embarrassed. My building's guard was standing right there as these men called me a slut for wearing the clothes I wore. This is who I am. These are the clothes I wear. Everyone else can **** off. Anyone can share this post. I am done feeling ashamed for being me.

Edit: Since there are those who think I posted this without this man's consent (thereby insinuating that I am the one who's publicly shaming someone). Here's the real deal: I actually asked his permission before taking his picture and posting it on social media! He said that he wanted "his message" out because the country will agree with him and not me. I gave him far more respect than he did me. Please please don't think these pictures exist here without consent. I have it! And given how skewered the Indian mentality sometimes can be, I actually think he has a point when he says that there will be people agreeing with what he had to say.

Bottomline: When you are in your home wear what ever you want because you are at private place, but when you are in public place then you have to take care of others as well and that how good society developed. She should understand the society and dress accordingly after all she is not a owner of society to do whatever she want.
