Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi jokes that its newest handset, built out of stainless steel, is like a “kitchen knife,” but iPhone-esque might be the better comparison.

The company Tuesday announced its latest flagship phone, the Mi 4, which is a cutting-edge device that comes at the attractive price of 1999 yuan (US$324), when bought without carrier subsidies.

Although Xiaomi phones are mostly sold in China, the company is expanding internationally in the hope of becoming a global brand. We took a look at the Mi 4, to gauge whether Xiaomi’s newest phone is worthy of the buzz.

China’s Xiaomi has been selling only Android phones for the last three years, but already has become the country’s third-biggest smartphone vendor, ahead of Apple. It’s done this by selling high-end devices at prices far less than the competition. For example, Xiaomi’s flagship phone sells for less than half the price of the iPhone 5S, which starts at 5288 yuan in China.

The Mi 4, doesn’t disappoint in the specs department either. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5 GHz -core processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 5-inch 1080p screen. There’s a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 8-megapixel front-facing camera and a 3080 mAH battery that Xiaomi claims will give 36 hours of battery life in normal use.

But during Tuesday’s product announcement, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun focused less on the specs and more on two areas consumers wanted the company to improve on: craftsmanship and the phone’s feel.

Trying the Mi 4, we found that Xiaomi had succeeded in those goals. The phone is a polished device, in a sturdy metal block that still feels light at 149 grams. Even with a 5-inch screen, the handset didn’t feel oversized. The space between the screen and the phone’s edge reaches only 0.3 mm. Xiaomi claims this makes the Mi 4 the smallest 5-inch phone by width, for a body that measures 67.55 mm.

That’s a big design upgrade from the company’s last flagship phone, which was encased in a cheaper-feeling aluminum-magnesium chassis. Xiaomi also added an anti-fingerprint coating on the Mi 4’s back cover that we found works well, eliminating nearly all the smudges after several minutes of use.

The phone’s performance is on par with other high-end handsets. Apps run fast and the screen displays some of richest colors we have seen on a mobile device. The Mi 4 can also quickly take pictures, without much pause from its camera, although the photos we took came out brighter, and sometimes blurrier, than what we wanted.

For a product at this price, you’re getting all the bells and whistles of a high-end phone. But while we were impressed by the Mi 4, we also think that it looks like a bigger version of Apple’s iPhone.

Like the iPhone 5S, the Mi 4 features rounded corners on its metallic frame. Furthermore, the edges are brushed and smoothed in a similar way, giving the two phones a bit of a resemblance.

Not that this is bad. But in the past, Xiaomi has in the past tried to play down comparisons with Apple. While the Mi 4 probably won’t help with that, the phone is definitely the most expensive-feeling handset the company has ever made. It should give rivals, including Apple, a run for their money.

The phone will start rolling out in China in limited quantities later this month.

While the world of technology is being led by the giants like Samsung, Apple, and Sony, it is the cowboys from China who are offering the similar (and sometimes even better) specifications with half of the price tag. The design and sleek look arguably may not be premium like the world-renowned names, but if you can get past the brand name and a few bits of “premium” then there is a much wider market for you to search for your perfect smartphone without worrying about losing half of thousand bucks in the process.

Xiaomi launched today its brilliant new flagship Mi 4 which followed the unveiling of other two major smartphones, the Huawei Honor 6 and the Nubia Z7 Mini by ZTE. In this post we will do a Xiaomi Mi 4 vs Huawei Honor 6 vs ZTE Nubia Z7 Mini comparison to help you find out which one of these lacks where and which one satiates your favorite feature with the best possible spec. For one, we are in love with Xiaomi Mi 4′s superb 13 megapixel camera that uses a new Sony sensor taking low-light photography and HDR video recording to a wholenew level. However, the other two are not far behind too. All these smartphones, as you can see from the specs list below, beat each other with the best possible hardware and software features listing some top notch CPUs, GPUs, sensors, and more.

Xiaomi Mi 4 vs Huawei Honor 6 vs ZTE Nubia Z7 Mini:

While the Mi 4 offers a huge 64GB storage, the other two make up for that with a microSD slot. All three coming as the 5-incher smartphones offer similar features with Honor 6 being the thinnest and lightest. Mi 4 offers a infrared sensor to replace all your remote control units. Both the Xiaomi Mi 4 and the Huawei Honor 6 sport the latest Sony IMX214 sensor with Mi 4 taking it a bit further with its 4K video recording capabilities and a better front camera supported by its own Exmor.

ZTE’s Z7 Mini may seem to be lacking a bit in terms of the processor and camera sensors, however, it is offered at the lowest price tag too coming at around $240 without a contract. Xiaomi Mi 4 is offered for $320 for the base model and $400 for the 64-GB unit. Huawei’s Honor 6 is comparatively more expensive here coming at $370 for the base 16-GB model. So, which one of these is going to be your next smartphone?

The 'Apple Of China' Is Eating Samsung's Lunch

The Business Insider

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun shows the company's smartphone sales growth.

The buzz around Xiaomi's newest smartphone, the Mi4, is how the company has blatantly, shamelessly ripped off Apple in just about everything from hardware design to marketing to the way its CEO dresses just like Steve Jobs.
But while Xiaomi spends its time trying to turn itself into the Apple Of China, it's actually poised to destroy Apple's biggest rival, Samsung, before anyone else.

In a way, Xiaomi is quickly becoming the new Samsung by adopting Samsung's strategy of copying Apple. But Xiaomi is doing it better than Samsung because it sells attractive phones with better build quality for next to nothing. Last quarter, Xiaomi said it sold 15 million phones. It hopes to sell 100 million in 2015, which would put it nearly on pace with Samsung.

Yes, Xiaomi is not as profitable as Samsung by a longshot. And yes, Xiaomi's insane growth won't last forever. But Xiaomi has proved that it can eat into Samsung's market share and profits by offering phones that have similar specs and better design and that run Android for half the price of Samsung's best Galaxy phones. (Samsung's plasticky Galaxy S5 costs at least $600. Xiaomi's new Mi4 with a 5-inch screen, metal body, and high-end specs costs just $320.)

The vast majority of Samsung's profits come from smartphones. Xiaomi is a big threat.
samsung-operating-profits-chart-of-the-day-1.jpg

This month, Samsung reported disappointing earnings and shrinking profits. It blamed smartphones from cheaper manufacturers like Xiaomi. Meanwhile, it's searching for new sources of revenue from emerging product categories like smartwatches and other smart devices in the home. But so far, nothing has hit.

Even more impressive about Xiaomi is that it has become so popular with almost no marketing budget. Samsung spends billions on marketing each year, but Xiaomi's buzz spreads organically through social media and word of mouth.

Xiaomi isn't alone. Another Chinese startup, called OnePlus, released a really good smartphone called the One this summer. It costs only $300 and is one of the best new smartphones to launch this year. OnePlus does not yet have the scale of Xiaomi, but it'll get there.

OnePlus and Xiaomi won't be the last, either. Eventually, cheap, high-quality smartphones will be as easy to come by as today's pricey phones.

That's bad news for Samsung, which has made a good chunk of its profits by churning out cheap smartphones. But Samsung's cheap smartphones aren't as powerful as Xiaomi's phones, so they're not as attractive to consumers. Samsung makes good high-end phones, but it hasn't learned how to grow and profit from that segment of the business the way Apple has. Until it does, or until it figures out how to make a new product category stick with consumers the way it did with smartphones, Samsung is in trouble.
