WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said it was up to India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute but he was ready to assist if the two South Asian neighbours wanted him to help in resolving the decades-old issue.

Trump was referring to his last week's meeting with Pakistan PM Imran Khan, wherein he offered to help resolve the Kashmir issue.

India has rejected the offer, while Pakistan has welcomed his statement.
"It's really up to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi (to accept the offer of mediation)," Trump told reporters responding to a question on India not accepting his offer of mediation on Kashmir.

"Have they accepted the offer or not?", Trump sought a clarification when asked about India's rejection of his mediation offer.

"I think they are fantastic people – Khan and Modi -- I mean. I would imagine they could get along very well, but if they wanted somebody to intervene, to help them…. and I spoke with Pakistan about that and I spoke frankly in (sic) India about it," Trump said.

He rued that the issue of Kashmir had been going on for a long time.

When asked how would he "want to resolve the Kashmir issue", Trump said, "If I can, if they wanted me to, I would certainly intervene."

Last week, in his joint media appearance with Pakistan PM Imran Khan in his Oval Office, Trump stunned India by saying that Prime Minister Modi sought his mediation/arbitration on the Kashmir issue.

Trump said the Indian Prime Minister asked for this during their bilateral meeting in Japan in June on the sideline of the G-20 Summit.

India quickly denied it and said the Kashmir issue was never discussed between Modi and Trump.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar refuted that Modi ever made that request.

"We heard remarks by President Donald Trump in a meeting with PM Imran Khan of Pakistan, to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India and Pakistan, on Kashmir issue," he said in a statement to the Parliament.

.
So Trump has quietly taken back his claim of modi asking him for mediation and instead said he is willing to mediate if India and pak asked him to.

Sounds like he and his admin are quietly working to undo the damage done to indo-us ties by that previous statement

As expected of Trump. He has a big filthy mouth but no credibility to his words. I am laughing at the Pakistanis who were expecting something huge out of his statements, few even started loving him from the core of their heart.:lol::lol:

Somone did not told trump that pakistan was already rejoicing on his previous statement. Should had let them rejoice for few more weeks, what was the need to clear the stand so early ? Party pooper trump.

Nobody rejoices but that was a diplomatic win for Pakistan. The Kashmir word again made the headlines & Modi was mentioned seeking mediation. Trump did not ask for pardon instead, India went into frenzy and started to insult US/Trump with every mean. If it was too rejoicing to say by Pakistan; we were the ones who told India that not to treat Trump like a god who will punish Pakistan on your behalf.

Whatever floats your boat. Although a few words from someone who is known to flip-flop at the drop of a hat is a pretty low standard for a diplomatic win. But I guess it is still good for Pakistan in light of it's diplomatic defeats suffered over the past few months at the UN, World Bank, and other fronts.

English comprehension problem? No wonder quality of Indian schools sucks as depicted by the posts of Indian posters.

Good that Trump is saying more and more about Kashmir. Pakistan should keep the ante high and keep reminding US about Kashmir. IK address to UN in couple of months time will be important.
