China has overtaken Spain to become the world's third-most popular tourist destination in the world.

According to World Tourism Organization, a United Nations body, the financial crisis in Spain has helped China to get past the European nation to become the third-biggest tourist destination.

In 2010, the number of foreign tourists in China reached 55.66 million, up 9.4% compared to 2009.

France with 78.95 million foreign tourist arrivals topped the list, while the United States came second with 60.88 million.

World Tourism organisation said that although India did not receive that many tourists, but it did pretty well in attracting tourist dollars.

India was ranked 41st in the list of top 50 tourist destinations after attracting 5.6 million foreign tourists.

But in terms of tourist expenditure, it rose to 16th position, earning $14.2 billion, a little less than Canada.

The numbers reveal that the cost of tourism in India is very high.

Thanks for the info.
Was a little surprised that Chinese read rediff.com
India has a long way to go to realise its tourism potential. Most of the tourism is domestic and related to religious activities like pilgrimage.
In China the tourism infrastructure is awesome. The amenities for tourists are very nice. The transport infrastructure is world class. India has to develop in all these areas. As India develops overall, tourism as industry will also develop.

Ordinary people like me would choice France as first destination and rich people with rich knowledge prefer countries with real nature beauty and historical memorial sites like India.

No,its not.
Tourists in India stay for very long time many times longer than they had planned and sometimes beyond their visa I read it somewhere that even though Thailand receives more tourists than India they stay there for 2-3 days while in India average stay is 16-20 days.India is second to China inAsia in tourists earnings.

I like Caribean, Spain, Hawai, Los Agelence, Canada, NZ, Australia, Full North-Mid Europe and Singapore, Malayasia on Cruise. And about China, would need few more years to realize its tourism potentials.

Tourist expenditure is high because foreigners stay in India longer than most other countries. Even in a city like Delhi, it takes minimum 5 days for siteseeing. Normally foreigners dont like to come to India because of various negative visuals fed through media andnegetive travel safety advices. But slowly that is changing by word of mouth, road shows, cultural exchanges etc.

you are talking about oversea indians coming back to india to visit families hence the longer stay, otherwise the average tourists that would stay in india or any where else in the world is 3-7 days is the most.

If u want to see most of those historical places and natural beauty it's 15 days minimum .
In the north himalayas and snow .
In the east all those mountains , virgin places
In the south religious places , beaches
In the west caves , forts and even modern entertainment amenities .

true but not many tourists have the time or money to stay more than ten days and not to mention many people get home sick after a while from home, plus the fact that most package holliday is around 3- 7 days depending on the country. no way you can see the whole of india in just one visit even if you planning to stay for a month.

Total tourist traffic to B&B Llandudno can be described as a function of two variables namely: the number of visitors and the average stay of the visitors. Notably, the number of tourists visiting a country need not always be the norm for the assessment of a country’s tourism traffic. It is the length of stay and the consequent tourist spending during their stay at a destination that will have an important implication for the country’s economy as also for its balance of payments.

Normally, an increase in the average length of stay is an indication of a healthy market situation. If the average stay of a tourist in Hong Kong is three compared to that of India (28.4 days), surely India is deriving greater economic benefit from tourism. According to the survey undertaken by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) it was found that as much as 24.2 percent of the foreign tourists’ stayed in India for an average period of more than 28 days.

What is more important is that this average is registering an increase, howsoever small it may be. For example, the average length of stay of foreign tourists was 28.4 days in 1984. This was more than the average of 27.3 days during the year 1983. In recent times things have undergone a major change. With the liberalization of the Indian economy and the fast march of the globalization forces, more and more people are now visiting and staying in the country.

The visitors from India and other countries to Ilandudno have increased significantly in recent times. The refusal of the UK government to join the European Union (EU) and the immigration friendly approach of the UK administration have resulted in a large number of Indians and people from other countries moving into UK. Even then, for students and other short term visitors visiting UK for trade and commerce or even for short term courses, it is the high exchange value of the British pound and the subsequent high earnings that is proving as an attraction.
