Talk about a waste of money on planetary proportions!
The oppurtunity cost of constructing this baby is so huge that I'm not even gonna start.

The Gulf states will be lost. Instead of wasting money they should educate their peoples because as of now they are living from western money in exchange for oil. They have no industry and no elite.

Its so true being there in Makkah , living there I know I used to wonder wow this will take long time as the terrain is so rugged and mountainous region , but now we are hearing long buildings being errected on daily basis .....

Its just hard to ignore such clear signs

My problem isn't how they practice Islam, that's their choice. What I don't understand is the economy of all these actions. The money used to make these buildings could be invested to make more money. This will benefit themselves more than anyone!!!

Making 30 billion dollar buildings however will benefit the American architects, the foreign builders and the Western companies that are supplying them with materials and equipment. In all countries, construction is only used to create employment. In Arab countries however they import the workers so it doesn't even help to create real employment! Plus, all the equipment and material is also imported. In a few decades they will have to renovate these buildings or destroy them.

It just makes no sense to me. Putting the money under your pillow makes more sense than this even. This money should be used to create jobs for Saudi citizens. At this point 18-20 percent of their men aren't really working and their women are universally unemployed. That's like a 65%+ unemployment rate (the official unemployment rate says otherwise but in KSA unemployment is defined as "unemployed male members of the society" and females aren't factored into the equation).

Look at the East Asian countries. China only invests in construction projects because Chinese workers build them and the supplies and equipment are purchased from Chinese firms. The money is invested back in the country and it doesn't leave.

They can't just "buy" good teachers... they themselves have to be willing to teach in their own universities. I somehow feel that everything is equated with money out there... if you have money you have everything kinda thought. So no one even makes an effort to develop the social aspect of the society.

A further criticism of the religious focus of the Saudi education system is the nature of the Wahhabi-controlled curriculum. @Abii... thanks for the insight into the Saudi education system...Do agree that the Wahabi controlled education has a lot to do with the insecurity that they might have if the rest of the populace becomes too educated.

I was merely trying to point out to the career course streams like medicine, technology, engineering and science where they pay heavy sums to get professors from abroad, but their own citizens would never take up these teaching jobs in the institutions.

World's tallest building to be erected in Saudi Arabia​

MOSCOW, April 15 (RIA Novosti) - The world's tallest building, the 1-mile high Kingdom Tower, will be built in western Saudi Arabia, Arab media have reported.

The skyscraper, expected to cost $30 billion, will be erected in Obhur, some 30 kilometers north of Jeddah City on the Red Sea's eastern coast, media reports said.

the 0.51-mile Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It will also exceed Dubai's 0.62-mile Nakheel Harbor and Tower whose construction has been put on hold.

$30 Billions for the skyscraper, Burj Khalifa coast only $1.5 Billion I guess $30 Billion is the for the whole project including the surrounding city development then?

With close to 90% of the property in the Burj Khalifa still unoccupied you'd think these people would have learned from their neighbours' mistakes.

Arabs are trying to be the next business and tourism hub once their oil runs out. Little do they know its takes more than tall as building in the middle of the desert for the tourists to come. Someone is giving the Arabs very wrong advise.
