With Sweden already having 160 enterprises across India, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said at the ‘Make in India’ conference on Saturday that his country has long-lasting relations with India, and that Sweden is here for the long term. Outlining great potential for cooperation with India, the Swedish Prime Minister said the global business focus has shifted to India from China.

“I see many areas of cooperation (with India). First is innovation. There is great potential for cooperation in this field. Stockholm is now one of the cleanest capitals in the world from being a heavily polluted one 100 years ago, he said at the launch of Make in India (MII) Week here on Saturday evening. “The world’s eyes are now on India. They used to be on China earlier, but they are now on India,” he said. Löfven who is leading the largest foreign delegation to be present for the ‘Make in India’ week in Mumbai also had a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday afternoon where the latter hailed Sweden as a significant partner in the ‘Make in India story.’

Modi also stressed on Swedish companies forging partnerships in India, especially in sectors such as defence, medical equipment, and electronic goods, among others. The country, which has a significant presence in Maharashtra and Karnataka, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Maharashtra in the field of skill development, and will sign another bilateral agreement with the Union government on Monday, Anna Liberg, said Sweden’s Trade Commissioner to India.

Liberg, however, did not divulge details on the new agreement to be signed. Addressing the Sweden country seminar on the potential for smart manufacturing in India on the inaugural day of the ‘Make in India’ week, Swedish Prime Minister said, “Sweden has a long-lasting relation with India and we are here for the long term. It is true that Sweden makes in India.

We already have 160 enterprises in the country, generating direct employment for 150,000-160,000 people, and creating another one million jobs indirectly.” Amitabh Kant, secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, said India is towards the beginning of a massive process of urbanization, and Sweden companies are the best suited with skill, ability, technology and mindset to help India in this process.

He added that Swedish companies, which started coming to India in the 1920s, have played a critical role in making India an industrial powerhouse. “.. the US has made cities for cars, not for people. India wants to build cities for people. We need public transport, and so we need companies like Volvo,” Kant said. He added that all major Swedish companies, be it H&M, Volvo, AstraZeneca, Tetra Pak, ABB and so on are already present in India, and assured Swedish delegates that the country’s industrial future is in India and the government will extend all support necessary.

“There are multiple benefits to electrifying our bus fleet, from creating jobs and eliminating harmful air pollutants, to reducing dependence on foreign oil,” says Marvin Christ, chairman of the AVTA board of directors. “These benefits will be seen at the local, regional, state,and national levels. It’s really a win-win.”

Under the order from AVTA, BYD Motors will build and deliver a variety of all-electric bus models, including a 40-foot low-floor transit bus, a 60-foot low-floor articulated bus and a 45-foot commuter coach. All 85 buses will have a range of more than 160 miles on a single battery charge. AVTA is also installing a wireless charging system to extend the fleet’s range to ensure the electric buses will be able to serve the agency’s longest rural routes.

AVTA says it is anticipating a cost savings as a result of electrifying its fleet. Over the lifetime of the new electric bus fleet, the transit agency forecasts it could save more than $46 million compared with an all-diesel bus fleet – equivalent to $46,000 per bus per year in savings.

The agency expects to take delivery of 29 electric buses within the next 12 month, and is working to secure additional grant funding from the California Air Resources Board to purchase another 17 buses.

“This is a historic day for AVTA, which has been working diligently to secure grant funding to purchase these state-of-the-art, zero-emission vehicles,” says Len Engel, executive director of AVTA. “We are proud to be the first transit system to adopt a goal of ‘100 percent Green in 2018,’ and we look forward to leading the nation toward a new alternative in public transportation.”

Indians have an exaggerated sense of self-importance. What China offers - a complete end to end solution with ease of doing business without Pesky labor laws and land acquisition hassles a messy and corrupt democracy like India can never offer.

Rather than Tesla, I would bet my money on BYD (002594.sh) in the long run, or other conventional manufacturers making inroads into new energy vehicles. Wish @cnleio have a nice career in this fast growing BYD!
