Work on submarine launched BrahMos in final stages

Well Akula Carries 24 VLS Klub N Cruise Missiles with 300 Km range
While 5 Kilo class Currently Carry 6 Klub S Cruise Missiles each with 220 Km range , 2 Kilo Class Subs currently undergoing MLU and Final Sub which will undergo MLU in 2014-15 , will be equipped by Klub N Cruise Missiles with better range

Also If we want to use Brahmos then it will require serious modification to Hull of these Subs and changes to the 533mm Launch Tubes , Which Frankly is not really worth it now
It cost us 60 Million USD each to upgrade these Subs , and decision to add Brahmos should have been taken in 2001 when MLU Began , Now with 7 subs having already been upgraded and 5 Fitted with Klub S Cruise Missiles , and with programme set for completion in 2015 , So it doesnot really makes sense to add Brahmos

Brahmos can only equip Indian Subs if Indian Navy chooses either the Russian Amur Class or German Type 216 or ,

OR Indian Navy takes up the option to carry out second MLU for Last 5-6 Kilo class Subs , which is a possibility should their be further delay in P71I Project which pushes induction of those subs to beyond 2022

Indian Navy have been quite impressed by Kilo class , Special its endurance in Indian Ocean and the Pacific , while Type 209 Have been found unsuitable outside of Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea ,

A second MLU for Kilo class will add 5-7 yrs of life to the boats and Could infact shift the retirement dates of last 7 Subs from 2018-27 to 2023-32

Are you sure about ^^^ this.
As long as know these Subs fire Klub class from torpito tube and so will be BrahMos. So designers might have considered this while designing. So I don't think any major modification will be needed. It would be just firing system( trigger) at most

India gearing up for BrahMos submarine tests
Monday, Jan 29, 2007

New Delhi: India is almost ready with its undersea launch version of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile and wants the Navy to help in preliminary test trials by the end of the year.

The Navy's help is being sought as the DRDO lacks a platform to undertake tests of the submarine launch BrahMos missile, which will put India among the few countries which have the capability to launch underwater supersonic missiles.

The Navy's present fleet of just upgraded Kilo class submarines do not have the capability to test fire such missiles, BrahMos Aerospace CEO A. Sivathanu Pillai said.

"We are in talks with the Navy to loan one of their expanded Kilo-class or some other submarine to undertake the tests," he said.

Alternately, New Delhi has also proposed that initial tests could be undertaken in Russian waters on a Russian naval platform.

"We are ready with the designs and looking for a platform to launch the missile from under the sea," Mr. Pillai said. — PTI

what abt scorpene ?

India is day by day getting in exclusive clubs of nations.....:yahoo:

Both in good ways but alas, in bad ways too.

Why do you think that the 6200 Tons Shivalik class carries Klub N Cruise Missiles while 5000 Ton Rajput class Carries Brahmos Cruise Missiles and Dhanush Ballistic Missiles

Its becoz when VLS Brahmos became available in 2007 , the shivalik class was far too ahead in its construction and making the necessary changes to platform to accomodate Brahmos would have delayed it
That also the reason why only Last 2 Rajput Class Destroyers which underwent MLU in 2007-10 carry VLS Brahmos while First 3 carry Forward Aft Brahmos Launchers and 2 Dhanush Launchers

In the same manner , By the time Sub launched Brahmos gets ready for induction , The Last Kilo Class would be undergoing MLU , and it it would not make sense to Start opening up the Hulls of Already upgraded Kilo class , just to accomodate Brahmos , unless we are looking at extracting more yrs out of these Subs

Currently only Klub N and French Scalp Cruise Missiles are capable of launching from 533 mm Torpedo tubes , While Brahmos and Nirbhay will Require 640 mm Tubes or a dedicated VLS system

This is also the reason why pakistan is looking to Add Babur Cruise Missile by widenning torpedo tubes of its Agosta 90B subs when they go in for MLU in 2015-20

what abt scorpene ?

Scorpene just like Kilo has a 533 mm torpedo tubes .......

Although the diamensions of Sub launched Brahmos is not known , the AShm version has a dia of 600 mm .....

So most probably kilo ( and scorpene ) will not be able to fire brahmos ( unless dia is reduced)......

In the news report , they are talking about a expanded Kilo , what is it ??

Akula is there....and the upgraded Sindugosh too.

And none of them can use Brahmos, because the lack of vertical launches. Both of them can only use Klub - S missiles, launched from torpedo tubes, but Brahmos can't be used that way with it's size (don't only consider diameter, but lenght too!!!) and weight.
The only possible platforms would be Amur class without AIP, or one of our indigenous SSNs or SSBNs, because they will have suitable vertical launch capability.
