Reports have emerged that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will allow women in the country to attend football matches – after the arrest of 35 female spectators caused international outrage.

Fifa President Gianni Infantino told reporters on Friday he had spoken to Mr Rouhani about the government’s plans to lift the long-standing ban on women attending male sports fixtures.

The pair met on 1 March in Tehran, the same day 35 women were detained for trying to sneak into the Esteqlal vs Persepolis match Mr Infantino attended – one of the top fixtures in the Iranian season.

“I was promised that women in Iran will have access to football stadiums soon,” said Mr Infantino from Fifa’s headquarters in Zurich.

“He told me that in countries such as Iran these things take a bit of time.”

There were activist calls for women to try to attend the 1 March game in order to attract the notice of visiting Fifa officials and draw attention to the extremely conservative social rules that impinge on women’s rights in the country.

Since the 1979 revolution Iranian women have had to follow strict dress and behavioural codes in public. Men and women cannot take part in sports together and are not allowed to be spectators at events involving the opposite gender.

When a journalist asked Mr Infantino about the ban during half time, the broadcast was abruptly taken off air by the authorities.

Just walk away from ultra ultra expensive luxury districts of our urban places in our country and you will see the real level of religiosity of our people.

I myself live in one of the most wealthiest districts of Tehran but still there are tens dozens of religious kids, teenagers, youths in our neighbor.

The Internet which is created by West only shows 0.01% of the realities on the ground ....

It is the elites who decide the direction of change in society.

They should be arrested. I believe its against the law for women to go to sports stadium with their male counterparts in Iran. So these women are going against the law and they are not even hiding it.

Don't get me wrong though, it's not like I'm supporting this law. However, the law is the law, whether you agree with it or not, you have to respect and identify by it, as long as the government have made it a law. So these women ought to be aware of this and stop going to sports stadium with men, until Iranian authorities have modified or changed the law(if it ever happens). Ca the be encouraging people to break the law just because they don't like it.

On another note, it's seems social change in Saudi Arabia under their young Prince is moving Saudi Arabia ahead of Iran in such fields, since such bans have already been lifted in Saudi Arabia by their young ruler. Interesting. Will be good to see the social change in both countries a Decade or two from now.
