MUMBAI: The world's rich and powerful may be residing in the US and Europe, but India is fast catching up. The number of high net worth individuals (HNIs) in India with net assets of Rs 150 crore to Rs 160 crore is expected to more than double over the next 10 years, rising by 137% in Mumbai and around 120% in Delhi, despite recent economic concerns, says Knight Frank Wealth Report 2013. The global property consultancy firm ranks India at fifth spot with 122 billionaires(net assets of Rs 500 crore and above) as of 2012 end in the top 10 countries for billionaires. It's expected to increase to 225 billionaires with an 84% growth by 2022.

The report ranks Mumbai at the seventh spot with a total of 2,105 HNIs in the top 30 global cities; while Delhi is at 11th spot with a total 1,905 such super-rich individuals. By 2022, the number of HNIs in Mumbai is expected to increase to 4,988 with 137% rise; while Delhi is likely to see it growing 120% by then to 4,278. This will give India, along with China and Japan, the highest number of HNIs in Asia by 2022. The rise of the Asian global cities is in parallel to what many are now calling "The Asian Century". With the historic shift in economic power towards Asia, its cities are undoubtedly going to become more influential in the coming years," said Nicholas Holt, director (research), Asia-Pacific, Knight Frank.

According to Knight Frank's global cities survey, while New York and London top the list in the cities that matter to HNIs, Mumbai stands only at the 38th spot of the top 40 cities. Across Asia, the number of HNIs is set to rise by 88% over the next decade — the joint highest rate of growth in any world region.

but still............almost 50% of our population is poor we will have to admit that

.
That's a stupid way to look at data. India also has a population of 1.2 billion. Per Capita results should be posted.

True.

Now be sure to tell this to pakistanis/chinese when they keep harping on Indian poverty levels, on any discussion about nuclear submarines or aircraft carriers or MKIs.

Whenever a positive news item about India is brought up, sino-pak trolls start singing about India having more poor than sub saharan africa (India also has more people than sub saharan africa). And whenever something negative is brought up, the very same trolls gleefully start singing about the absolute number of people affected, regardless of the percentage.

only thing we can do is ignore such people

It's a good news however I don't feel too happy about these stats, the ever widening gap between the super rich and poor is increasing. We have been treating our 'poor' people like a vote bank and nothing else. It's about time we must concentrate our efforts to address their grievances.

if we cut out these 122billion dollars from Indian GDP?

can someone calculate me the real per capita income of india while the billionaire factor excluded?

I suspect it to be not more than 800dollars atleast

GDP is not calculated based on the assets owned, But the earnings done. How much, a Billions dollars investment earn on an average per year multiplied by 122 is the real worth in total GDP of India

And therein lies a calcuation error.

You can't cut that figure from the GDP, because GDP is "per year".

These billionaires did not earn that much in the past year.

GDP is the produce of the nation per year, and billionaire becomes a billionaire due to his total worth, regardless of how many years it took him or her to earn it.

The GDP of the economy shows how much the country earns each year.
