No it wasn't stupid. Any man with a sense of dignity would be wrong not to act. He is the man that is supposed to protect his family. Laughing it off would only demonstrate that he is a coward. If the joke was on him, laughing it off may be appropriate. But not when it was on his family.

Defend of what? This was at most a verbal abuse, no life or property is threaten. You can verbal attack back but physically assault other because of this will only send you to jail unless you are rich and famous like Will.

That is true. Yet, verbal abuse is not something that should be tolerated. A quick justice, though through violence, is still better than rigid conformity to the written law. It is certainly better than being bottled up until volcanic eruption, which happened to many kids who suffer verbal bullying. Yes, I may be sent to jail. But a better legal response may be just to give me a warning.
