Will China Break?

I always had doubts on Chinese statistics. When the Europe and US are in dire economic difficulties, how come China is growing at 9%? (China being an export orientated economy).

We will import 8 trillion USD in the next five years, and you still believe that we are an export oriented economy?

The Chinese people have far more power of consumption than the Indian people.

Chinese President Hu says China’s imports will exceed $8 trillion over the next 5 years - The Washington Post

This is what are Chinese plans for the next 5 years. The point of discussion is now.

Anyway can you answer this

35% of your G.D.P is contributed by consumer spending, while China spent 50% of G.D.P on investments. In any country investments are proportion to the consumption. Why is China spending so much on investments?

Jan-Oct 2011 Import

China: 1.43 trillion USD
USA: 1.83 trillion USD

China 2011 nominal GDP: 7.5 trillion USD
USA 2011 nonimal GDP: 15 trillion USD

What do you expect? Our nominal GDP is only half of USA, yet our import is almost 80%.

ok but we have been hearing such stories since 2000.And honestly i am bored of these predictions.

China 2011 Jan-Oct import: 1.426 trillion USD
Our export should be around 1.6 trillion from Jan-Oct 2011.

That points to negligible domestic consumption, I guess that is why west is complaining. And a major risk to china in case exports to US/EU slow down

India is far more transparent than China.

High investment spending is consistent with high saving, high growth economy.

Investment drives growth, the prospect of existing high growth will attract further investment, investment ratio will go down as growth cools to slower rate.

Modern statistics counts housing purchases as investment, which accounts for a vast majority of spending. Housing purchase will cool when migration rate from rural to city slows.
