A long-running legal battle between China and the Philippines will conclude on Tuesday, July 12, when the Hague's Permanent Court of Arbitration delivers its verdict over the so-called "Nine-Dash Line" - a key shipping route in the South China Sea.

The decision comes three years after the Philippines brought its case to tribunal, with Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam also laying claims to overlapping areas of the ocean.

China claims virtually all of the resource-rich sea as it's own, and has continued with an aggressive building programme of military ports, artificial runways and fortresses, despite international condemnation.

The country has already said it will ignore the Hague's ruling, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi saying it "would only escalate the disputes and tensions.”

Ahead of the ruling, the US government called for “all claimants to avoid provocative actions or statements.”

But in an editorial in the state-owned People Daily newspaper - the official mouthpiece of Beijing - China warned there would be "a price to pay" for further interference from the US.

The newspaper editorial said: “There is a bottom line with every issue, and a price will be paid if that line is crossed.

“If the United States, regardless of the cost, chooses the path of ‘brinkmanship’ that pressures and intimidates others, there will be only one result, that is, that the US bears all the responsibility for possibly further heightening tensions in the South China Sea.

“China has a solid-rock position over safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. It will not want anything that does not belong to it, but it will ensure that every inch of land it owns is safe and sound.”

Tensions between China and the US have been simmering for several months.

The US has become increasingly angry at what it sees as China's "militarising" of the South China Sea, with Barack Obama reportedly considering sending US artillary units to the region as a deterrent.

Chinese officials are already angry with America carrying out naval missions within the South China Sea, under the convention of Freedom of Navigation in international waters.

Last month Chinese fighter jets flew within 15 metres of a US aircraft over the East China Sea - a move which Secretary of State John Kerry described as a “provocative and destabilising act”.

Seemingly demonstrating its resolve, China has begun a week-long series of combat drills near the southern island province of Hainan and the Paracel islands in the South China Sea, which focused on air control, surface operations and anti-submarine warfare.

Two guided missile destroyers and a frigate were among the naval vessels taking part in the drills, according to state news.

However, the paper claimed this was just normal naval activity which "is not connected with specific events or countries".

Americans have no fought anyone matching their strength and size, not after world wars anyway. The chances of americans backing down are very likely. Like one Chinese General said to his american counterpart you value Los Angeles more than Taipei. Americans are not stupid to fight a war over Philippines.

. . .
You think wars are won or lost on cute little anecdotes and quotes. You don't know
This is guy Ross Logan , who has wrote that story on China US war, He dont know where in china on map but r expert of US china relations. How ironic .. Idiot Logan, even dont know that US need china more than money and china need US more than they need oxygen. Both r rich due to each other.

Quote, "even dont know that US need china more than money and china need US more than they need oxygen. "

Was that the subject of your thesis, perchance?

Probably not, but hey you never know.

Severe sanctions are forthcoming against China and that's where I see it going first. There is almost $7 trillion or so of trade that goes through that route, and it can't be left to a chinese hegemony based on ancient maps. There are laws of the sea that china has signed as a participating member, and laws have to be followed when we have so much commerce depending on it.

I don't think anything will change..maybe the Phiippnes will ask for more arms and stand up at the UN and shame China or something If they get their map adjusted.

Like I said US has not fought an enemy which could not only match US strength but also had the capability to hit the main land. Neither Iraq nor Afghanistan or Vietnam for that matter had something even remotely close to that. Besides Chinese do claim they kicked your *** in North Korea and Vietnam. Also they kicked India's. So they might not be as non experience as you would imagine.

In the case of war between the 2 Pakistan should push its full support to China. Bringing down the big tyrant known as USA down will be by far the best thing in the world to happen in a long time.

Lol who gonna reinforce the sanction US?, Americans are so desperate of "made in China" 1 dollar store items, probably that is the average American can afford, slap a sanction you gonna trigger the unrest from those poor American in US, And on China side you can kiss good bye for your Disney land, Boeing, apple, American corporate business will have to ask for regime change in US, all American IP in China will probably become a worthless papers.

In 80s and 90s China was indeed economically dependent on US and not the other way around but nowadays we're interdependent, if Americans are willing to suffer as well than be our guest, initiate the sanction, we shall see what, Chinese is autosufficient practically on every thing for consumer products (cell phone, PC, car, BBQ grill....).

China has never said that it will menace the sea trade route, that is the pure excuse for US to meddle into SCS affaire but American intention was very clear, they control all the straits and define first and second island chain with the sole purpose to block Chinese sea trade route in case of hostility.

Your economy is a debt timebomb and an export dependent economy. Chinese banks are looking down the barrel of a staggering RMB 8 trillion - or $1.7 trillion - worth of losses. We will see how it stands up to sanctions. You have zero right to impede the sea lanes with your silly maps and man made islands. Stating otherwise is Chinese hogwash. won't happen and we will make sure of it.

Debt timebomb  maybe Americans should look themselves on the mirror, I needless to say more. Yes I'm eager to know when this sanction will occur, the sooner the better and we shall see what will be the impact on US. And we're not impede the sea lands but toke a page out of American book regarding the maritime geostrategy or probably we should copy integrally the whole American book.:coffee:

no problem. should china go down the drain, chinese with money are welcome to migrate to Vietnam. I just created a thread. sorry we don´t take poor chinese, nor PDF trollers.

Why not, we will be glad to make Vietnamese as second class citizens as ancient time when rich Chinese settled in Annam and virtually control entire Vietnam economy, we can corrupted and make Vietnamese official to work for us...don't you think isn't that wonderful?.
