Why the sikhs had no desire for a independent sikh state in the 1940s?

Sikhs are an integral part of India, Sikh religion originated in India and it cannot be separated from the country.
India is a secular country, which had a Punjabi Sikh as prime minister for 8 years.
About atrocities, every community in India has faced some or the other kind of atrocity in India's history.
We know that greatness can be achieved if we are United as a single nation.

What would help in healing wounds is if those responsible for those atrocities were behind bars or hanging at the end of a rope.Instead they walk around with smug smiles safe in the knowledge that they will never face justice.

So in my opinion being part of a larger federation is better for the Sikhs. The best they should go for is an autonomous state with-in the Indian Federation but even with that i am not really sure what extra benefits they will achieve.

There is a general consensus that some degree of autonomy must be provided to the state of Punjab- It is agreed upon by all political parties except Congress-

However the 80s flareup courtesy the Congress again has put that idea in cold box- Sikhs are probably the most damaged community in the subcontinent- They have been hit left right and center and have been totally decimated by every one they don't even retain 10% of the strength they had in past(Sikh Empire of Ranjit Singh)- Much to do in all this is their infighting aswell-

Britishers used Biharis against the Sikh Empire. When Biharis rebelled in 1857, Sikhs wanted revenge so they sided with British. Thereafter Britishers stopped recruiting Biharis and encouraged more Sikhs to join. Also they considered a monotheistic religion superior than what they perceived as polytheistic heathens (I don't feel this way and know enough about Hinduism to know that both Sikhism and Hinduism can be monistic.)

1) I didn't say we loved Muslims. We don't love or hate any other religion, we get along with everybody. I made a mistake and referred to RSS as Shiv Sena, whatever they are both Hindu extremist organisations for me. They were brutalizing Muslims and we sided with Muslims because they were right.

About Muslims and Sikhs again there is no love lost since the Partition period and History of Mughals keep a constant reminder of how they were treated- Even today I come across people who remember very clearly how their fathers and elder brothers cut the head of their sisters and daughters in the entire village just to save their honor- Their voice run dry at the horror even today-

Most of my life has been spent in Delhi- and the bitterness is quiet visible- It would not be wrong to say that Sikhs find hard to get along with anybody- Where ever they are in a majority they form a shell of their own- some interaction with Hindus(generally Punjabi Hindus) they don't have high opinion about Jat Hindus- Muslims they hate the most- calling them Pakistanis, Whore etc is common(even elderly ones do it)- Not to mention their ideas on the notion of Love Jihad where the price of a Sikh girl is the highest- BBC even did a program on this-

Other areas where the Sikhs are a minority or with Significant population of others- they hide this bitterness and try to be friendly with everyone- But there is a sense of reluctance even in this friendliness of theirs specially If you visits the areas of Rohillkhand UP- Where they have faced the wrath of Muslim Majority in recent past consistently- Besides Punjab- They only place I found them with some peace- now even Punjab seems to be on a boil- is Jamshedpur- in Jharkhand- there is a sizable population- But that was 10 years ago- I don't know how they are going along these days-

I'm just giving you a Punjabi perspective. The average Punjabi Hindu, Sikh just gets along fine with each other as well as with the Pakistani across the border. Whatever happened in the past, we've gotten over it. Sikhs dont blame HIndus for 1984 as much as Congress. Hindus also don't blame Sikhs over killings in the militancy period as much as a few misguided individuals. There is a sizeable Muslim population in Maler Kotla and we get along fine. There were Hindus and Sikhs protesting when the Quran was desecrated recently there. We also hear stories about undivided Punjab from our grandparents and are curious about Pakistanis. For us Punjabiyat is our main identity.
