The origin behind the idea was that it was a custom for the wife to became part of her husband's family upon marriage. Her taking his name was also a symbol of her bearing his child. Of course nobody nowadays says that the primary purpose of marriage is procreation. But a millenia old custom isn't going to go away just because of a few decades of feminist criticism.
I am not against the custom as such, but wonder has UK really come as far as one would want, in terms of gender equality?
My mother did not change her name, and she is near illeterate. What do educated women, who have their own career, identity (and in many case your name is like a brand) think of, before agreeing to change their last name.
42 percent marriage end in divorce, how many times one will change the name.

she doesnt need to atleast not in Islam, heck you can even keep you sons name after his mother, i now realize that if my second name was my mother's it would have been more beautiful

Much ado about nothing. My wife kept her surname after marriage
next question: why should women have to go to men's house, why men do not go to women's house ? :coffee:
My wife has not changed her name , nor do i feel she needs too.
My Wife also kept her surname.. She just changed her surname in facebook may be to console me..:undecided:
why do you think its unrealistic to expect not to change your name?
my name is my identity.. I understand some change because they like the idea.. and thats fine.. but more than 90 percent uk women changing name in this day and age?
I cant imagine changing my name for a woman if there was such a custom..
also its so impractical because you dont know how long your marriage will last. (in UK).

the basic point is existence of surname... whether of husband or the missus... i ask why should surname be present in this day and age?? our identity now is present via other means... passport number, national id number, house address etc.

can we do this experiment... within the next six months, we will remove our surnames, retaining just the first name... if any of us has a wife, she too must remove her last name...

islam should not be dragged in these matters.

it is a cultural thing. Some cultures do it. Some don't. Islam itself is mute on this and should be.

Thank you

.
I have seen many examples of women keeping their names, so doesn't look compulsory to me.

Old China times, Chinese women also will change her name after marriage, husbands surname + fathers surname,
After 1949, no longer the case.
It seems even in the West, not as Chinese women have equal status:confused:.

I would prefer my wife to have my surname but if she doesn't want it then its her choice..

It is regarded as tradition for wives to take a man's name after marriage. Why, asks Dr Sophie Coulombeau.
BBC News - Why should women change their names on getting married?
In other words, Male domination over Female!!

Nah... wrong it does not matter, she changes name or not after marriage Wife dominates everything.
e.g. One of the most powerful man in world is not spare.... there is on chance for common man to date to challenge female (wife) domination. :P
