Why 'secular' Narendra Modi bashers must be ignored

What I see is most Indians finding it difficult to make ends meet, while corporate elitists such as Modi (very few in number) exploiting the common people there to make themselves rich. I also think it's very telling that you have slums & run down places right next to mansions of rich people in Ahmedabad. Also, $80,000 is a lot of money my friend, people put their life investments on the line for this, & it takes years & years to pay it off, & there's no guarantee of that happening with the poor economic situation here.

What is your point of reference when you say "most" Indians my friend? Most Indians you know in Hoboken, NJ? While some would argue that New Jersey was actually the 29th state of India, I hope you realize that there is more to the real India than anecdotal claims. You will doubtless notice that of the two sides of Indians here, those pro and those against Modi, nobody actually denies his competence and what he has accomplished in his state as a leader and an administrator. You would also do well to recognize that Gujarat is not only about corporate/industrial/infrastructure development and pro-rich. Gujarat is equally the dairy queen of India, and the epicenter of the agri coop movement that empowers rural India.

Drive off NH8 into the hinterlands and off-roads of Gujarat and the Rann and you will see signs of affluence touching even B-towns and villages. Gujarat is not just Ahmedabad. It is equally Surat, Vadodara, Navsari, Bharuch, Vapi, Valsad, Himmatnagar, Dahanu, and myriad other smaller towns and villages that have benefited and grown. So there are slums and mansions abutting each other. What is different or unique about that compared to many other major cities all over the world? Or would you have the cities sanitized, and the poor kept out of sight somewhere less visible to spare delicate sensibilities of those who choose to see that and not the forest for the trees?

32% of Gujarat's population living below the Indian poverty line does not come as good reading.

Most Indians I know are my mother who was born & raised in Patna, my grandparents & cousins that are still in India, my family in Bihar, UP, Jharkhand, Delhi; my friends in Punjab & Rajasthan (Jaipur).

And the funny thing is that report has not been officially released and what you posted is a leaked version which is true/false to anybody's guess.

Go back to your cave

So essentially you are saying that Tehelka, Outlook India, Hindustan Times, The Hindu are all lying? And you're saying they just made up the specific page & line numbers of the findings? You're worse than the people that think 9/11 was an inside job.

Haven't we gone through this already ?

All the Newspapers you list base their publication on the same leak obtained by Tehelka/HT and we know their credibility as anti-Hindu Congress mouthpieces

Save your froth till the real report is out.

But you're denying there even is a report, & everyone but you is crazy & stupid

32% of Gujarat's population living below the Indian poverty line does not come as good reading.

Population living below poverty line (BPL) in Gujarat stands at 16.75%, which is well below the national figure of 27.5%. Gujarat has come out comparatively better off in the implementation of various Central government schemes

And before you jump at the Tendulkar committee report, let me add that in addition to the Food expenses that are used worldwide as a calculation for Poverty line the Tendulkar committee uses Expenditure on Food, Education and healthcare for calculating BPL. This method is India specific. So if you want to compare then for that sake 16.75 is the BPL in Gujarat.

But you're denying there even is a report, & everyone but you is crazy & stupid

There is a report but no one is actually aware of what is there in the report.

Try understanding.

You gave me a 2009 link, I'll give you the latest link for Gujarat from the same source (Times of India) you used. Also, the report from the Tendulker committee is more realistically accurate than your one:

I understand perfectly

Lol I knew perfectly well you will get the source from IndiaMuslimobser and TOI based on Tendulkar committee report.

That is why I took my time to explain that Tendulkar committee report is India specific and it NOT according to the world wide recognized metric for calculating BPL.

Going by the internationally recognized metric for BPL the percentage is 16.75 in Gujarat.

Carry on with your hate with scant respect for facts.

And which specific internationally recognized metric are you quoting, & please give me the appropriate credible links that say that.

Fair enough !

My point being the obvious hypocrisy when Congress or the other so-called secular parties decry him as communal when they have a lot more blood on their hands.

That is where I would like to differ. I believe he did his best in controlling the situation within 3 days and checked the spread of riots to other places within Gujarat.

Given the gravity of the situation, the gruesome manner in which the Karsevaks were killed and Gujarat's own record at communal riots (before Modi) which go back centuries there is no way in hell he (or anyone) could have stopped the riots from happening.

There was simply too much emotion on the ground and too less trained personnel to control them.

And I am not trivializing any death - but juts saying they were not the first riots in Indian history nor was it the largest in terms of casualties.

If it is not too much to ask from you you can go through these links to see his actions taken to prevent the riots (just consolidation of various media reports) - Link and Link
I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. My own assessment was not based on newsreports alone. Reports by HRW, NHRC and several other citizen's fora headed by retired judges, IPS/IAS officers and social activists contributed hugely to shape my views.

It's official: 37 pc live below poverty line:

The Planning Commission has accepted the Tendulkar Committee report which holds 37 per cent of people in India below the poverty line, an increase of 10 per cent.

Internationally recognized metric for calculating BPL takes into accout only the expenditure for Food (and does not include Education or Healthcare expenditures).

So by that Gujarat BPL is 16.75 as laready proved by my link and be aware that I am not contradicting this with the Tendulkar committee report which says Gujarat BPL is 31%. It is just that the Tendulkar committee report is an India-specific one with a newly defined criteria for BPL which includes Education and Health care expenditures also ann hence the increase in BPL.

Both are not self-contradictory. But if you want to compare in the traditional sense then 16.75 is the figure to go about.

Why are you posting the same thing again and again as if I disputed the Tendulkar committee findings.

What Tendulkar committee said and I say doesn't contradict each other -Going by the classical definition of BPL (used worldwide) the poverty rate in Guj is 16.75 % and going by the newly instituted India-specific Tenduljkar committee report it is 31%

Understand what is being spoken here before spamming the forum with the same link again and again.

FYI,

The quinquennial National Sample Surveys of household consumer expenditure surveys carried out by the NSSO provide the basic data set for official poverty calculations. For canvassing household expenditure on a recall basis, the NSSO has decided to shift to Mixed Reference Period (MRP) for all its consumption surveys in future, namely, 365‐days for low frequency items (clothing, footwear, durables, education and institutional health expenditure) and 30‐days for all the remaining items. This change captures the household
consumption expenditure of the poor households on low‐frequency items of purchase more satisfactorily than the earlier 30‐day recall period. The Expert Group decided to adopt the MRP‐based estimates of consumption expenditure as the basis for future poverty lines as against the previous practice of using Uniform reference period estimates of consumption expenditure.
