IMHO the need for more MBT's to be used below Multan till Badin is rising out of India's thrust for greater number of modern MBT's in this larger area.
Despite man made water obstacles utilizing the SCARP program and forward deployment of our Armored Units in smaller satellite cantonments and holding areas, the need for more MBT's remains to blunt the expected armored thrust.
Two wars have been fought in the plains of Punjab using armored thrusts, but to no effect -- Med. Tanks are good enough in Punjab where engagements at extreme ranges are just not possible due to built up structures, canal system and Tree lines. It is also a good terrain for ATGW Teams with plenty of cover for shoot n scoot tactics. Testament to this is the use of Jeep mounted RR Teams during both wars (Indian Military Planners during wargames were most worried about the mobile RR Teams till the mid eighties when laying out plans for armored thrusts).
One can see the transformation in the Indian Armored Corps with tanks equipped with dozer blades and anti berm apparatus and better frontal armor. Increase in bridging equipment all point out to the fact that the opposing side is preparing to fight a battle in desert regions where sand berms and man made water obstacles will be used to funnel them in to killing zones.
PA on its part wants more and better equipped MBT's. Our mainstay MBT today is the T-80UD. Most of them are deployed in the south. We need better MBT's to be stationed in and around Cholistan Desert. Coupled with a hunt for dedicated Anti Tank Helo, acquiring better equipped MBT's is the need of the hour for PA.
