Chunxiao has been exploited since 2006 if I remember correctly, actually Ningbo and Shanghai are using Chunxiao gas since then and Japan keep complaining about it for a decade. Recently we plan to exploit not only gas but also oil which cause Japan louder their vioce. But if we can ignore Japan to exploit gas, why can't we do the same to exploit oil? Afterall the drill is in our EEZ

This is your biggest problem: you think everyone who doesn’t align with your country is a pawn of another country. And I just don’t mean the regular Chinese civilians, but reading interviews and reports from your officials, it looks like your govt also have this same view. This is a big mistake of your country. It means that your officials don’t understand your neighbours, they don’t understand the relationships and dynamics between your neighbours and the US. Remember what your ancient said, know your enemies, know yourself......but its seems to me that your officials truly don’t know and don’t understand your friends and enemies. I don’t know about Japan and South Korea, but Vietnamese and Thai officials love it when your govt underestimate and mistaken Vietnam and Thailand as weak and powerless pawn being bullied+manipulated by the US. Putting on that image has been our modus operandi for centuries but it seems like your officials never learn.

Don't worry, China govt have changed foreign policy and people start to realize the importance. 20 years ago, when Chinese officials and people including president talk about diplomacy, it must mean relationship with America, Russia and main Europe powers. Since last govt, especially incumbent President Xi, China govt has promoted importance of diplomacy with neighboring nations, India, South America, Africa nations, East Europe. The central govt consider diplomacy with BRICS, G20, ASEAN, Pakistan the same important as America, Russia, west Europe.

Well I don't recall ever calling Vietnam or Thailand a pawn, but Japan and SK are a totally different story, let‘s not be too generic here. and please try to understand that China is playing a game on a much different level than some small time players witch only knows getting the most benefit by taking no sides. Considering our adversary here, sometimes you get rewarded for being paranoid.

And for those officials you mentioned, how can you even tell if they are saying what they say as diplomatic strategy rather than speaking their mind straight out.

It's not about daring. Of course JP govt don't want to dispute too much with China in ECS, so they won't drill there recklessly, but there are other reasons. First Japan hardly investigated enough in that area, which means their data about underwater resources are extremely limited; second, It's too far away from japanese islands, the distance makes exploitation not profitable.

I think things are far from that easy. You see, every country or even every people act both as a pawn and a player. Everyone in the international politics will take any opportunity to maximas their interests, so they are both the pawn and the player at the same time.In 1960s, Vietnam used Soviet and China as pawns to fight against US and to unify the country, meanwhile Soviet and China used Vietnam as the pawn to keep US away from their influences, both sides are pawns and players at the same time. You can use other ppl, and sometimes you are used by them too. It is nature to a country to act as a pawn, as long as you don't yield your own interest.

From the looks of their reaction, their understanding of international relations is at best, at basic level. The fact that they simply summarize as "country A" being a pawn of "country Z" just because the former is not aligned with us. Heck, it is almost similar to Zero-sum mentality.

For them, foreign relations is simplified into this - "you are either with us or against us."

Almost ironically you have quoted George W Bush.

meh, sometime, someone just need some History Channel loving.

I am the kind of guy only subscript to cable TV simply because of History Channel. Plus, did I told you I was a history major when I was in college in Hong Kong?

I can tell that you are indeed educated in history from your well written article write ups , Sir. The command of history and application to modern warfare is impressive, but am not surprised since you are a U.S. Veteran !!

I have read somewhere that Japan is slow on east china sea gas field because it is rather uneconomical for Japan. There are far too little resource, and the pipe line will have to travel far to reach Japan.

Japan actually wanted China to just share some profit, but China doesn't really see a need to comply.
The question is, China is drilling on their territory. Why does Japan want us to share the profit? What did they put in on the project and are they even a partner for this project?

Japanese want to break the post-WWII world rules.

See? You guys find the real face of the Japani guy. I said hundres of times: Japanese smile in the front of you, shoot you in the back suddenly. Never trust the Jpanese. Be tough against the Japnese.

Please remember Japan doesn‘t have independent foreign policy, and always keep in mind who is really pulling their strings. Japan alone is not necessarily the enemy here. I see even friendship between us especially among the people if not on government level. A certain propagandist here thinks he is promoting Japan but ended up doing the very opposite.. We shouldn’t relate an individual to a more general public..

Our friend @Nihonjin1051 must be angry at something, hence the sudden change of rhetoric. There is a certain dynamic amongst the peoples of Sino-sphere in NE Asia which foreigners can never understand but might disturb. Opinions on PDF does not matter much, but, on the ground, too, we see that rhetoric has been changed dramatically ever since Japan showed its willingness to mess with China in the SCS.

Attitude of the chinese reminds me of a poor guy who somehow suddenly comes into money. Can buy stuff but doesn't have taste.

Reminds me of Mumbai.

Threats abound, other countries are lackeys, whole countries can be decimated by detonating EMP overhead and what not. Im quite curious as to what alliances will eventually take form considering the attitude of the chinese. Guess its wait and watch.

You can start by signing off the AIIB. A great power is always a bot arrogant. What do you want to hear? We offer carrots and sticks and sticks are nowhere to be seen as all we demand respect for our sovereignty. We threat no country with invasion.

We have disputes, yes, but it is a two-way street. if the other side drops the claims, problem solved.

China is socialist, my friend, hence historical-experimentalist. Remember that? Vietnam, another Communist, should know this. It is never as simple as it seems to you.

Beijing to Tokyo: We Have Every Right to Continue Drilling in E. China Sea
24.07.2015
China on Friday dismissed a call from Japan to stop drilling in the East China Sea, saying it has every right to continue oil-and-gas exploration close to waters claimed by both nations.

Moreover, China said it does not recognize a "unilateral" Japanese median line setting out a boundary between the two in the waters, Reuters reported.

Earlier this week, Japan called on China to halt construction of drilling platforms in the East China Sea, concerned that Chinese drills could tap reservoirs that extend into Japanese territory.

In 2008, Tokyo and Beijing reached an agreement to jointly develop in the East China Sea, which China had honored.

But the Japanese government angered China in 2012 by purchasing a disputed island chain there from private owners. Since then, patrol ships and aircraft from both countries have been watching each other, escalating fears of a confrontation.

Japan has released aerial photographs of China's construction in the area, accusing it of unilateral development and a half-hearted attitude toward the 2008 agreement, Reuters reported.

China's Foreign Ministry said its drilling activities in waters which are not disputed and under Chinese administration are "completely appropriate and legal."

"China and Japan have not yet delineated maritime boundaries in the East China Sea, and China does not recognize the Japanese side's unilateral marking out of a so-called 'median line,'" the ministry said in a statement obtained Reuters.
