A lay man in any part of south India knows that mohan lal is a malayali ,chiranjivi is a telugu and rajanikanth is a tamil hero.however no one including me knows the name of single kannada actor.

Many south indians know that bharata natyam is a dance form from tamil nadu ,kuchipudi from andhra pradesh and kathakali from kerala.
But what is the dance form of karnataka ?

A state like kerala which is smaller than karnataka has its unique identity.
Why doesnt karnataka have one ?No one seems to be bothered that there is a language called kannada or people called kannadigas.

See we can understand if some Maharashtra or gujarat has lost it's identity because of a lot of influence of Hindi media and movies..in south no language is threatened by other languages influence..so I am curious to know what might be the reason behind kanndas lack of recognition.

What rubbish. Maharashtra and Gujarati identities are robust and healthy and so is Karnataka and other states identity. Is Bangalore not the most popular place for the educated of the country to head to? Are Udupi restaurants not a common popular culture food joint all over the country? Did people not know Raj Kumar? So what is with this nonsense?

to people north of vindhya, all are madrasi. :yahoo:

So far nobody said anything about Aishwariya Rai ?
more people think she is bengali ... (than kannadiga)...... op has a point.

Because many people don't realize it's not Roy/Ray, it's Rai. Everybody knows Roy is a Bengali surname, thanks to Bollywood. That's the problem.

Probably coz Sandalwood has not made movies that's caught people's imagination outside. But Kanadigas are famous for great public intellectuals. U R Ananthamurthy died recently all the flags across the state were at half mast for a week. Very rare for an intellectual of such stature to get such respect any state.

You might know him hopefully.

There are others that may be our previous generations might recognize
like Raj Kumar, Ambaresh, Ravi Chandran, Prakash Rai.

For dances there are quite a few:

Among the classical dances of India, the Mysore style of Bharatanatyam is the oldest and most popular dance form and is widely performed in Karnataka.

There is only one answer to this question we are not radical fanatics like in other states and we accept other people with open arms. If you ask a Kannadiga for a route in Tamil you will be surprised that you will get a reply in Tamil (or at least broken Tamil)

same if someone asks for info in any other language. We are a pluralistic society with very few radical elements. We love Kannada but we don't impose it on others so you seldom hear about it.

Are you kidding me? There are so many things that one identifies with Karnataka. For me the first that comes to mind is the Udupi cuisine. You guys invented the friggin Masala Dosa and that is the symbol of the entire south Indian cuisine. No one cares about Idli or Idiyappam or Puttu.

When someone tells you to list South Indian businessman, the first guy who comes to everyone's mind is Mallya. He is Kannada, is he not?

Also, you've got the most famous writers/artists in India today from both ends of the spectrum. Bhyrappa, URA, Girish Karnad, etc.

If someone asks you to list the greatest south Indian dynasty, you'd immediately remember only two: Cholas from Tamil Nadu, Vijayanagara from Karnataka (although they were Tulu speakers).

Dusshera is still seen mainly as a Karnataka festival in the south.

Yakshagana may not be famous, but most people see that as the most famous Kannada dance form.

You haven't had your own superstars. You did not idolize any Kannada actor to the level that Rajni or Chiranjeevi or Mammutty/Mohan lal were idolized in their respective states. So no Kannada actor is that famous. Even Rajkumar never enjoyed that status. The fault lies with you. Not with others for not knowing a superstar from your state, since you never had one.

As @Bitter Melon said, this is a bozo thread.

^^^ I have same impression, kannadigas are the coolest south Indians.. they accept outsiders, and are not unnecessarily chauvinistic about their language & culture. Not sure where sri ram sene ppl came from, never expected kannadigas to be like that.
