Why India needs to rethink the Rafale deal

Ruskis got drunk.... $30bil????.

Firstly the cost of the deal won't go beyond $20 bil at the most. Second is the cost is of total life cycle cost and not the flyaway cost. By life cycle cost SU 30 are much more costliear than Rafael.
GoI must stay with the deal and ink it at the earliest.

The cost is crazy for a stop-gap measure, especially a stop-gap measure that was needed back in 2001.

Why not invest that money in your own indigenous defence industries, imagine how happy they would be to get $30 billion. That would be the better long-term option, but many in India believe they don't have the "time" for that, given their security vulnerability in the present.

Short-termism seriously hurts the long-term prospects for their indigenous defence capabilities, but that is their choice.

Because our aviation industry is not even close to firms like Dassault (Which has been building very successful aircraft for decades) ....

Besides, the deal will eventually help our own industry. The bulk of the Rafales will be made in India, ToT is a central point of the contract and the deal also has a 50% offset clause.

.
in the F-35 you are getting Rafale/FGFA performance instead of operating two different jets
and by 2016/17 might be looking at $80 mil a plane.

problem is no ToT, but think we wouldn't mind investing some the earning right back into India's defence sector

still love the Rafale and who knows about Pak-FA

@C130 is right...Why we are not buying F35, if price for a single rafale is more than that....?

we should stop making fun of ruskies and think about what is in owr interests

1. Cost : rafale is to damn expensive and costs almost same as a FGFA so its better to go for FGFA than rafale anyday

2. Other otions :if not FGFA i guess/am sure that recent modies visit to USA has created some uneasiness in minds of french and ruskies alike im not too sure but have some hints that USA is giving a deal to india which is too good to resists specialli after flip flops in scorpene subs and ripoff in M2K ugrade prograam

3. leathality : rafle is one leathel fighter but its almost twice if not more diffuclt/costli as per leathality/edge its gives over the compition

what i always beleaved was that we should have dumbed rafale a very long time back its better to go for latest gen F/A 18 E-F version with CFT+ latest gen AESA radar &some cool & costeffective stealth pakages and as we all can agree american wepons gives most bang for the money and they fulfill there commotments on time (sometimes even before time)

last but not the least all this TOT hokus phokus is nothing but a glorified screwdriver job as no one will share its most leathel and modern/evolved tech with its potential buyer

its better to get F/A 18 E/F advanced super hornet made in USA if cost is right (under 65-70 million USD) as USA if required can make/diliver almost a squad18 psc. per year

You know it is a classic case study in 'letting go' of something. If we had continued with Ajit development program and came in with other fighter planes, we wouldn't be in this situation. The morons decided that building a fighter was 'too complex' for us and cancelled future projects. In 1990s when LCA started we had to start from scratch. Wouldn't have happened if we had built on Ajit's successes and failures.

How does Rafale compares to Su-35?
thats the million dolar question :)

thing is Su-35 if it has AESA & latest engines + some latest jammers it can beat the crap owt of rafale but thing is rafale even today is much better with its spectra+ AESA + armamment carrying capacity & of course is the onli one that can supercruise

@ Sancho can u shed some light here .. please

That's a false dichotomy, to paint it as either importing or building our indegenous industries. It is not the case that our indegenous projects are being starved of funds due to all these imports. If that was happening, then I would also have asked to look at the longer term picture. As of now, all the indegenous projects have all the funding they need. It is not funds that are holding them back, it is the fact that these projects were only started in earnest recently. Throwing a few billions into the LCA program will not make it roll out any faster.

Our aerospace industry today is only capable of developing and producing a Tejas category aircraft. But the requirement of the IAF is much more than that, so we will have to import more sophisticated jets, while developing the Tejas. (Whether Rafale is the best import option or not is debatable though.) We are at the same stage that China was about 20 years back, when China had to import a lot of flankers from Russia although they had indegenous programs in the works. In 15 years from now, hopefully our aerospace industry would be capable of producing AMCA class aircrafts.

Long story short, as much money as needed for indegenous programs has been allocated for them.

1.cost includes life cycle costs!!! FGFA anf Rafale both have different purposes!!! Rafale is medium class deep strike aircraft!
2.Obama is pissed off already (spike over javelin )...besides US is not trust worthy....if we went with US in fighters, we may end up losing Russia completely!!!
3.in its class Rafale beats super hornet hands down!!!
and About ToT.... This is quite different from what we received through MKI....it will sure to help us in future!!! besides U know US products comes with lot of strings attached!!!
@Abingdonboy u knw better plz enlighten us!!

btw I desperately want to see Rafale in IAF!!!

its a proof. this article is a proof that negotiations are going ACTUALLY well ! Kinks have been sorted out. think people !

sit tight. khangress is out. sonia and son looted india desperately the last 4 years. they knew they didn't have a chance in 2014. this contraft has to be scrutinied deeply and new MoD has been on the case.

French compani is notorious for giving kickback in the weapon sales.

India Rafale deal is a fait accompli. The deal has been signed already. Expect a squadron of Rafale in 2015. There is no point complaining about it. It is definitely the best nuclear missile capable fourth generation aircraft that will be able to defend India adequately for a while. French, unlike Russians, will keep their word of transferring the technology to India for a price which can then be used in Tejas and other fighters. French are also good in helping to install a variety of foreign missiles to their fighters. Rafales fitted with Israeli missiles will be a force in the sky, Just wait and watch. Overall, it is a good decision to go with Rafale. It will help all concerned parties; IAF, India, Dussault, and France.

That sort of mentality is for the losers. Come when you have won even one war, jaali degree engineer.

Whatever the cost, it will not be only for the fighters. The French will be providing additional TOT under the table in this deal. It is more of a package deal. I am guessing engines (both heli and jet) and probably space related (rockets).
My question was why they didn't entered in our territory?:coffee:
