Its not a country problem.. its a people problem.. businessmen are making a ton of extra money by charging 20% to 50% more ....
It's all dirty business..everywhere...everytime! i wonder what are the price committees or competition commissions even doing. There are huge cartels formed in almost every sector which control the prices as per their free will
To quote 3 examples of how the filthy dirty businessmen play with the prices
1) 3 years ago Pakistan had excessive domestic peanut production. Farmer was happy (we grow in our native area) that they will get good money as government will also buy for exporting. But it happened that 'someone' in the power had a product produced (or out of stores) in abundance on his lands and he wanted to export it. Contacted India. Yes India. India that year also had abundant peanut production. Indian side cut a deal that they will buy that 'someone's product provided he buys back the abundant peanuts from India. Deal went through for importing Indian peanuts despite there being exportable abundance in-house, as a result it became dirt cheap in the country. We in Pakistan had to store peanuts in poultry sheds for protecting it from rain and rotting. Some survived. Some couldn't manage to cover the costs even
2) Bananas. Some years ago, a similar deal was cut whereby Pakistan had to import bananas from India against someones abundant crop. Indian bananas were costlier compared to our local produce. It is on record that the local banana was left to rott in Sindh fruit market and not allowed to be sent up country until the point the banana prices rose high enough in the country for Indian banana to make a business case. For the first time in our history we had the bananas selling at more than 150 / dozen. The trend continues now
3) Medicine. Now the same certain family has decided to milk the medicine industry through its cooperation with Turkish investors. The bill has been passed which now requires a category-A pharmacist to be present in the medicine store as opposed to previously applicable dispensing level diploma holders or pharmacy assistant degree holder. Consequently 100s of 1000s of people are on the verge of being kicked out of the market and left unemployed without a backup plan offered by the government. The plan might look good technically but the intention behind it is to milk the medicine industry. Intention is to have their own medicine manufacturing factories selling only through their own pharmacies, at the same time banning all other type of pharmacies who cannot afford a category-A pharmacist on the counter.
......and the list goes on
