Why fruits are so expensive in Pakistan?

.
A question mark on business ethics in Pakistan.

.
Storage issues
Besides many fruits are imported
for example we here in Peshawar get Apples pomegranate even bananas of different variety from different countries as well as local ones including from Afghanistan.

.
All goods in Pakistan are expensive due to tranport cost on Truck / Wagons which are costly vs transportation on train which is 60-80% cheaper. This cost is transferred to the consumers.

  • Example if 100 Tones of apples are transported by Turck it may cost 30,000 Rupees. The same 100 Tones can be transported by Train costing may be 7,000 Rupees

Nation also incurs extra deficit due to oil used in Trucks for transportation which is imported from outside

So it is a double edge strike on people

  • 10-20% of Food products are wasted during the transportation , as it rots and goes to waste

Inefficient way to transport Goods, suspectible to blocks and rush hour and accidents
and other inefficieny in transportation

Efficient Transportation Mode, fast , dependable , can move massive amount of material at rapid calculated pace

Since Pakistan is run like a Ad-hoc , private business by few families their own interest does not lies in setting up state train to run efficiently

This is why we have expensive food products locally

  • Increase of prices in Pakistan are directly related to decay in Pakistan Railways operations. When we will see reduction in performance of Trains in Pakistan we will also see a subtle rise year year in Pakistan.

The more oil we import for trucks and wagons for transports the more debt we incurr

Strangely enough for the vendors in Pakistan fruits are a glamour item for which they will charge extra.
vendors are poor who earn few bucks once in a blue moon aka on some special occasions like ramazan

They are damn cheap in India.

Oranges 15 to 25 rs a kg.
Chikooo rs 10 to 40 a kg.
Musk Mellon rs 10 to 30 a kg.
Water malon rs 10 to rs 20 a kg.
Mangoes rs 30 to rs 50 a kg.
Grapes rs 40 to 50 a kg.
Apple rs 30 to 80 a kg.
Pappaiya rs 20 a kg.
cheeko is very expensive here in my city
over Rs200 per kg
btw we don't get oranges in kgs but per dozens in off season orange was at Rs400 per dozen

.
As stated above , due to this lack of Trains for Freight

Limited quantity of food reaches people , that in return causes high "DEMAND" and high demadn rises pricess. Every one wants a crate of mangoes when there are less mangoes in market.

However the high rise in Food prices do not mean higher taxation collection. As many fruit vendors operate Ad-hoc basis , and there is no perfect system to track sales tax of fruits and goods

Now in country we have TRUCK mafia , as we saw in Karachi they parked the trucks in roads to block trade in Karachi recently.

The lack of development of Freight Train corporation has put Pakistan's national security at risk as now we are dependent on these TRUCK mafia

  • Truck Mafia
  • Water Truck mafia
  • Illegal Rickshaw/Cab mafia
  • Illegal Bus mafia

These three groups have now become a hinderence to development goals

Here we get oranges rs 30 to 40 for at least 15 oranges.

Da
Apple costs Rs 100 to 250 (imported ones obviously).

Presently due to fasting, shops are full of dates varieties (This is how it is for long). Something, I guess not common in Sanghi north Indian land.
Dates are rs 60 to 70 per kg. Black dates are almost double the price.

Apples in Germany can be bought, 5EURO 5 kilo.
Same with milk, fresh bottled milk is 1EURO and tetra brick long life is 0.5 EURO. Milk of bio fed Cow is 1.25 EURO
Non of it is made with surf, same situation is with cooking oil, flour, sugar.........
Situation is same in neighboring France.

What's happening in Pakistan is a form of enslavement, which has roots in taxes even on edible, houses are taxed, telecommunication is taxed, roads are taxed, Karachities told me Zardari even taxed sunshine, this is why solar energy picked up after his departure!

Call to start cargo trains between Karachi, Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry senior vice president Ziaul Haq Sarhadi has demanded of the government to start export cargo train between Peshawar and Karachi.

Mr Sarhad, who is also vice president of All Pakistan Customs Agents Association, said in a statement that good freight was profitable head for Pakistan Railways.

Earlier cargo services like 0012 down, 002 down and others that were operated from Peshawar were a big source of income for Pakistan Railways, he added.

Mr Sarhadi said that the service should be re-launched as soon as possible.

He said that the province had huge potential to export gems, marble, handicrafts, honey, furniture, matches, herbal products and other items.

He said that local exporters were transporting their goods to Karachi though private carriers as Pakistan Railways was not operating export cargo trains.

Mr Sarhadi said that lack of facilities had rendered Peshawar Dry Port useless. He said that before 2008, nearly 11 passenger trains used to be operated from Peshawar that included Rail Car, Thal Express, Awami Express, Tezro, Lahore Passenger Train, Abasin, Chinab, Khushal and Quetta Express.

He said that currently only Jaffar Express, Awam Express, Khushal Khan and Khyber Mail Express were running from Peshawar. He appreciated the efforts of Federal Minister for Railways Saad Rafiq and said that the minister was taking practical steps for development of Pakistan Railways.

Mr Sarhadi urged the minister to launch export cargo train, goods-in-transit to Afghanistan train and good train service for turning Pakistan Railways into a profitable entity and promotion of export from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He alleged that some black sheep in Pakistan Railways hatched conspiracy to flop cargo and passenger train services from Peshawar. He demanded of the railways minister to take stern action against such black sheep.

I think its because Pakistanis have high purchasing power hence more demand and higher prices.

Fruits are cheap in areas where they are grown.

For example, I used to buy grapes for 70-80 rs per KG in Baluchistan.

Apples were also much cheaper...

The "middlemen", transport and other expenses and shopkeepers (beghairati) makes fruits expensive.
It's Ramadan and thus another factor... the sellers don't give a crap about govt set prices..

Ziarat,Muslim bagh,Zhob and other regions grow the best apples, grapes and "chirgozah"... and pretty cheap.

You can't really finish 1 apple so easily.

Turbat etc have the best dates.

Gilgit Baltimore apart from the dry fruits has the best appricots etc.

Here you go - in Sanghi Delhi

Pak is one of the largest date producing countries on the planet.

@Spring Onion You might know this, Turbat produces the best and sweetest dates in the world, (unlike the Iranian or the Arabian kind) but due to it being in the nook of the country, and lack of storage and transport...

Sindh and southern Panjab have the best mangos.
